Best place to donate an old car?
We have an old car we wish to donate. It runs fine, but has some crash damage to it. The crash damage is more than the car is worth but is actually easily fixed with some junk yard parts. It has four high end Michelin tires with no more than 10k miles on them. I mention this to say the care has either useful salvage parts or it is worth fixing up for someone needing basic transportation. Apart from the crash damage (all superficial) I would not hesitate to take the car on a coast to coast road trip.
Where might it serve the best charitable purpose?
Where would I get the best value to me?
In the past, we gave three cars to Purple Heart. All three were really just salvage value. This one is better than that, hence the question. I know some places just taken them and sell them at auction. You get the tax deduction equal to the auction price. Other places allow you to declare the value and they fix them up for direct donation to someone in need of a car.
Thanks!
Why worry about the tax write offs? If you were truly benevolent, you would give it to one of you fellow DUmmies.

1. we just donated a car to our local public radio station
Car Talk has set up the program. They come get it after you give them the title, when it is fixed up and sells the radio station gets the money and you get the tax deduction.
It wouldn't run and you saved the wrecker fee.

5. Volunteers of America
Edited on Fri Aug-05-11 01:26 PM by Cirque du So-What
I donated a car to them once. They gave me a 'receipt' on which they listed the year, make & model of my car, but it was my call on what I decided for a 'book value,' which I then counted as a charitable contribution.
VOA fixes up donated cars and gives them to people in dire need of transportation to & from a job.
That's the answer he was looking for.
His old beat up rust bucket is worth 10,000.00.

9. wish you were 3000 miles closer
I'm looking for a beater that is just reliable. After about ten years of walking to save the planet, I'm giving up and need a beater cuz I'm moving a bit farther from the bus stop.
Can't you live in the back room of the pie shop?

What a DUchebag!

crash damage is more than the car is worth
So the fair value is...zero.
Wouldn't want Vinnie to get in trouble with the IRS.
By the way, the IRS is the only outfit that will pay you for wallduding a DUmmy.
They will pay you 30% of the tax, interest, and penalties recovered from tax cheats like Vinnie.
Lurking DUmmies should take note.

Just so you'll know.

Now you've went and done it. you've given them a reason to distrust us.

This is one of those issues where I'm going to get it from both sides of the aisle.
Getting run over by traffic going both directions happens, when one's being reasonable.
Anyway, I could never figure out this giving things away to get an income tax deduction.
The primary reason one gets rid of something is because one doesn't need it any more, doesn't want it sitting around the place collecting dust and taking up room.
Any other reason to get rid of something pales into insignificance, when compared with that.
When I don't want something any more, I just want to get rid of it, get it out of my life.
I don't care if I "get something" for it, I don't care where it goes.
I just don't want to deal with it any more.
The last three motor vehicles I owned before the current one, I "sold" for a package of cigarettes all three times (because in Nebraska, one has to put a cash value on things). And earlier than that, when one of my older brothers died, I "sold" his second car for a package of cigarettes that time too.
I suppose in every case, I "threw away" several hundred bucks, or even something more than a thousand--none of these were Cadillacs or anything--but it wasn't worth my time and trouble to try to "get something" for them. I just wanted to get rid of them, to get them out of my life.
It uncomplicates life considerably, not worrying about such things.

You would think that the dude wouldn't worry about a tax write off. Aren't taxes all patriotic and stuff? Except for longing for the destruction of the country and hating our military don't the DUmmies claim to be patriotic? Doesn't more taxes decrease unemployment in DUmmie-think?
-
I'd say fix it up yourself, then ask around at Churches and see if there's a family in need of a car.

We made a donation of an unused item, decent size, to Habitat For Humanity, we were glad to get rid of the item and glad the item selling would mean a good cause would get the money, they told us they would send us the receipt of the item for tax purposes, we told them no, we didn't want it, they told us we had to take it, so they sent it to us and we just put it away, we didn't use it. No idea why they said they had to send it to us though.

The idea is to give one an incentive to give unneeded items to worthy charitable organizations rather than sending them to a landfill, or parking the old car back in the woods. That incentive is one of those "loopholes" the DUmbasses always bitch about. I always record those items, just like the much larger figures for church, property taxes, deductible interest, and even our stupid dividend tax. Thanks to Marsha Blackburn, we untaxed red staters can also deduct sales tax.
Of course, you have to itemize deductions, and it's a rare DUmp democrat who even has income in excess of the standard deduction.
I don't know how it is elsewhere, but in Ohio I learned even giving a car away cost money. You had to put the sale price on the title when you signed it over. When the buyer took the title to the county clerk to have it transferred, he had to pay sales tax on the full fair value of the car, even if you sold it to him for one dollar.

Whoa; I never heard of that.
Here, one pays the sales tax on the selling price of the vehicle; Nebraska collects plenty of six- and seven-cent sales taxes on cars.
For purposes of property taxes, though, the car's assessed at its real value.

Exactly what I was thinking. H5.

Using DUmmie logic, he would WANT to pay more taxes so he could afford a new car.

No way in hell that's gonna happen. People like Vinnie have neither the skill, nor the motivation, to ever fix anything up.
And if he hired someone to fix it up, it would go on craigslist, not to some xtian outfit.

She could use it as a vacation home.

But but but but but, I'm an evil Republican and I didn't use the receipt that Habitat for Humanity gave me for tax purposes, do you think maybe regressives are greedy and don't want to help the poor themselves and only want others to do it?

I'm way more evil than you, so when I itemize I scrape up every legitimate deductible dime I can find.
I won't willingly pay a single cent more in taxes than required by law.
The difference is, I freely admit that, while moonbats lie through their teeth and deny it.

Tax avoidance is a moral imperative, tax evasion is a felony. Thus saith my accountant, a very moral man. He knows his tax law, it is all he does, he is good at it, and, he has been known to work for pizza!
I donated a some very nice pieces during the recent remodeling of the kitchen / dining room. When offered a receipt I declined it without anyone saying a word beyond thanks for all the stuff. I was happy to be rid of the stuff, happy someone else would get use from it, and , happy that I didn't have to pay to have it lugged off.

I didn't see any mention of the special note the clownman left for us at the bottom of his post.
Spelunkers, go **** yourselves.
Hi DUDE!

Spelunkers, go **** yourselves.
Good catch.
How did that get there? I couldn't have overlooked it and his attempted fraud shows no edit.
-
Stinkdude should be carefull. Never know when a post of his might attract the attention of some governmet agency.

Well, I'm dismayed at the attitude of our pal Vinnie, insulting us like that in his signature line on Skins's island.
We've never been anything but nice to the sparkling husband dude. He usually enjoys a starring role in the DUmpster, publicity for which other primitives would kill. And he gets it free, no work on his part.
And he has the honor of all the Mrs. Alfred Packer stories being dedicated to him--that's a distinction not to be taken lightly, as franksolich doesn't dedicate such literary efforts to just any Tom, Dick, or Harry.
If this is the way the sparkling husband dude treats his good friends, one wonders how he treats his foes.

DUde gets way more attention here than he does from sparkly.... You'd think he'd be appreciative.
