Democratic Rep. Gabrielle Giffords of Arizona made a surprise return to Washington Monday to vote in favor of an agreement to raise the debt limit.

"The #Capitol looks beautiful and I am honored to be at work tonight," she said in a Tweet.

Lawmakers offered Giffords a standing ovation on the House floor when she showed up for the vote. After it was completed, House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi said Giffords' name inspires the love and admiration of Americans and called the lawmaker the "personification of courage."

Her waving seemed clumsy and she looks very frail but it's moving to see her up on her feet, looking alert and aware of her surroundings.

I don't mean to be a dick, but did she actually read the bill before voting for it?

I don't want to be a Richard Cranium, and I'm very impressed with her recovery (  :hyper: ) but I'm thinking this is a ploy to show that she can still do her job, which I doubt.

It's a good sign for her that she was able to do this.  I'm glad for her.

Now that this is done, we'll be rid of "David (Wu) the Tiger."  He's supposed to retire after the debt vote.

I'm glad she's recovered, but it reminds me of the Democrats making a big show of wheeling Sheets Byrd into the Senate chamber on a hospital gurney so he could vote on Obama's healthcare bill.

It reminds me of Senator Kennedy. He didn't want to die until healthcare got passed.

How long before she's back to being one of the DUmp's hated Blue Dogs?

I think they really would like to hate her now- Because until she voted, none of the Dems were willing to do so. But her condition has made that impossible.

"I strongly believe that crossing the aisle for the good of the American people is more important than party politics. I had to be here for this vote. I could not take the chance that my absence could crash our economy." - Rep. Giffords.

And Vice President Meathead had this to say to her..

"I told her she's now a member of the cracked head club like me with two craneotomies."

And not A peep from the primitives... I wonder what would have happened at the DUmp if G.W.Bush said this....

It was either ABC or FoxNews....maybe both...reported today, before Obama finally came outside to speak, that if it hadn't been for GG showing up to vote and to vote for it, that it would not have passed. According to the reporter, all the Dems who voted after her, had said they were going to vote no. And the country would have gone into default.

Also got the impression that Obama/Reid and a few others (Pelosi was publically quite gracious, but it could have been only a political move on her part), were not too happy that she showed up. Prior to her coming in, they were pretty sure they would be able to blame the shut-down on the GOP, particularly the Tea Party.

I don't mind being a bitch and saying that, as her constituent, I wish the lady all the best in the world, outside of Congress.  She didn't look like she belonged up there, making the hard decisions.  And yet, if she runs, she'll probably win based on the sympathy factor because people tend to let their emotions override their common sense.

I'm hoping she decides to do the right thing and not run again, so she can concentrate on a full recovery while someone else devotes the time and attention required to representing District 8/AZ in Congress.  But I'm not holding my breath.

I agree with everything you said. If she runs again, it will be no contest.

While she struggled physically, she seemed fine cognitively.     No problem with her keeping position, and voting if she is more than fine in cognitive reasoning.

Publicity stunt or not, if she did was is alleged above; her vote being the catalyst for simultaneous additional Dem votes and dry poppin' the Leadership in the poop chute so the Tea Party doesn't get the blame, I'm all for it!
