Actor Snipes Sentenced To 16 Years
Prosecutors Sought Maximum Prison Term For Actor
OCALA, Fla. -- Actor Wesley Snipes was sentenced Thursday in a Florida courtroom to 36 months in jail on tax evasion charges, Orlando television stations reported.
Attorneys for the action asked U.S. District Judge William Terrell Hodges to limit the sentence during a hearing earlier in the day.
A jury found Snipes guilty in February of willfully failing to file taxes for three years, in which the government said he owed almost $3 million.
But Snipes' attorneys said that his tax liability was only $228,000.
Snipes was acquitted of three identical misdemeanors and two felony charges of tax fraud and conspiracy.
The actor's attorneys said that the government's sentencing guidelines aren't fair for tax convictions like his. They wanted him let off with no prison and no fine.

I am actually shocked. I didn't think he would actually get any time.

:lmao:
While I'm a fan of his works, I'm glad to see this judge didn't give a damn about his "celebritiness".

sometimes , life oddly imitates art.
(hot bandwidth alert)

It will be interesting to see if he accepts his punishment like a man or appeals the sentence.
I hope this serves as a wake up call for others in the rich and famous crowd that they are not above the law.
-
I'm guessing he'll appeal.
-
It has already been appealed....starting today.
I think this sucks. Snipes is being used as an example, and that sucks. Virtually no one gets prison time in these cases. This isn't about Crime and Punishment. It's about the power of the federal government.
The IRS accepted Snipes' five million dollars. They claim there will be more to pay after penalty and interest is compounded. I think that is example enough.
No one benefits from Snipes being sent to prison except those who want to use his incarcerated image as a warning to others Americans not to f*ck with the all-powerful IRS. There is no thought about the taxable income Wesley Snipes won't be making while he plays Poster Child. This stinks On Ice just like Martha Stewart's sentence.
The Clintons and Al Gore are roaming around free. I suppose there is no such thing as equal justice.

there is apparently some pretty outrageous background to the snipes story. I'm not completely familiar
with the details, so I won't attempt to relate them here, but I am seeing a lot of people that I typically
trust saying that he had this coming.

He got involved with that "subversive" organization which claims the federal government has no power to tax income and that the IRS is unconstitutional. Snipes has been involved for about the last ten years. But he isn't the first to face charges. Others have been involved for as long or longer and got intensive probation or less. That is why this sucks.

I agree completely. While I like all of his movies, especially the first two Blade movies, no one is above the law.
I read an interview of him once, in those Blade movies, he really is doing all of the martial arts works. Seems he has several belts and has been in the martial arts since a young age.
At least he won't have to worry about dropping the soap in the shower while in prison.

He's a really intense person and into a lot of radical beliefs.
Yes, it does suck. The IRS is making an example of him.
-
"Always bet on black."
That comes to mind every time I see Wesley Snipes. Considering how unbelievably black he literally is.

Would you care to dance, my dear?

pete rose went to prison too, if memory serves*. and the amount involved was much less. I am not fond
of the IRS or the federal gov't confiscating a big chunk of my income either, but respect for the rule of law, and
all that . . . .
* I think I just supported your point for you.:thatsright: you are very welcome. :-)

Rose filed false returns. That is a bit different. He wasn't protesting by not filing. He was cheating by filing lies. Then he only got about six months jail time and a hefty fine.

maybe we should put the IRS in charge of immigration. :-)

Interesting......The house that we are living in we bought from a bank forclosure, as the previous owner belonged to one of these groups........failed to pay his income, real estate, and personal property taxes.......they had to evict him and his wife with a SWAT team......he (and his wife) did 18 months in Leavenworth for tax evasion, and he owed a hell of a lot less than Snipes.....
