to the american people on TV he asked them to ask themselves
"are you better off now than you were 4 years ago?"
we were not better off
carter had come into office at the beginnings of the 70s second recession(or the end of the first depending on who is telling the story)
despite his good intentions and his hard work the day to day opinion of americans was that he was ineffective
despite what his supporters held up as proof of his work

I'd say that Reagan's question to America about Jimmy Carter would work again.

At this point, I think that would work if a box of blueberry Pop-tarts were the candidate.  Never fear, thanks to the Tea Party, we will not run another McCain, Dole type candidate.  As a matter of fact, were it not for the Tea Party, this debt ceiling debate would have been status quo:  Preen on the C-Span cameras, make "the sky is falling" speeches, then summarily vote for a debt limit increase that included enormous tax increases.  Thanks to the Tea Party, neither deal remaining on the table contain ANY tax increases; spending cuts only.  The Overton window has been moved.
