Starting to think Nadin needs her own subforum over here. It's a long thread with several new addons to the iggy list.

Civilization collapsing, a failure of a culture...
so we went to watch Captain America... and we were struck by the previews. Spiderman... no, I am not kidding you, they are re-making that. A cartoon I used to watch as a kid is being remade... of course Contagion, a bad take on the Andromeda Strain using bird flu (how to keep people scared)
Ad to that NASA and it's end with a whimper, a dysfunctional government, Borders closing, I could go on. We have signs that our culture is on the edge of collapse.
The ride will not be nice... that is all I can say at this point.
(And yes Borders was badly managed, but in some cases that IS the only bookstore in town)

21. No, it is not just that... but the fact that we have almost
no original world coming out in the theater, books and movies tells us something about media consolidation and yes, a people running out of ideas.
It is but one more trend to add to a list of LONG TRENDS that tell us that indeed we are in trouble.
By the way thanks for the insult on the hot pockets. Are you insulting all the time, or just now?

Do you have Amazon blocked or something? Ebooks.com? Don't have ITunes?
A retail bookstore in this age is like having a horse and buggy shop in the 1960's. It's an obsolete marketing tool. It satisfies impulse shoppers that don't want to wait, but most people just pay the over 50% off to have it shipped and even that isn't the case as you have ebooks and itunes to instantly download to readers like a Kindle.

I wonder how Nadin is going to feel when society is still around in a couple of years.

People surviving without statist totalitarianism is the worse thing that could happen to DUmbasses.
It would mean they aren't as important as they insist they are and the 1st law of liberalism: EGO, recoils at the thought.

The thing I don't like about bricks and mortar bookstores, is the clerks who editorialize your choices. "Glenn Beck? What do you want to be reading that for?" Look at the bouncy tales at the DUmp where they **** with the merchandise. I don't get any crap from Amazon.
-
Nadin saying everything will be OK and work out for the better would be a sure sign of the Apocalypse.
-
Well, our society began with chants of USA! USA! USA! at the Lake Placid Winter Olympics, per plagiarist Pitt, and ends with the closing of Borders and a crappy Spiderman remake, per nutcase nadin. Luckily for us, they're both DUmmies.

Old-faxhioned I may be, but I enjoy bookstores myself, I often find books of which I was not aware in browsing them. I use the internet for finding used/out-of-print/specialty books on fairly focused topics (I prefer BN to Amazon for that), but finding books that are less directly related to my search but still interesting in their own right is just better in a store than the unsortably-huge results an internet search yields.

I bought a Kindle about 3 years ago after reading a review by Charles Johnson over at Little Green Footballs, it was just prior to his transformation into a stark raving moonbat. I love it, it's like having 24/7 access to a bookstore and there have only been a few titles that I wanted that were not yet available in Kindle format.
-
I enjoy browsing bookstores (used bookstores are even more fun), but I'll admit that I don't get most of books from them anymore. I use paperbackswap.com for the vast majority of my books, amazon for a decent percentage, and an old fashioned bookstore when I happen to be near one and something looks particularly interesting. I read a fair amount of e-books now, especially since there are so many classics that you can get for free :-) My parents got me a Kindle for Christmas, and it is great :-) Only issue is that I never realized how much I depend on cover art to identify my books for me... Someday, like when I'm done with school again, I might reward myself with a color e-book reader.
I do enjoy doing homework at the coffee shop in my local Barnes and Noble.

Love the Kindle, and the $0.99 Kindle best-sellers. The Donovan Creed books are a clear sign of impending societal collapse.
I felt the trend, but I didn't read the script. I even felt the water, but didn't realize it was the Rubicon.
Thank goodness we can share the wisdom of nutcase nadin with the DUmbasses.

I used to spend Sunday mornings doing the Sunday Crosswords at Borders. My wife worked Midnights on Sat. nights, we'd go to church and breakfast, then my daughter (in a stroller) and I would head over to Borders to browse books, get the paper, and drink overpriced coffee. I have fond memories of the place and I'll miss it.
A sign of the end times? Um, not so much...

While I don't think we can lay it all at Spider-Man's feet...with great power comes great responsibility. :-)

Nadin fancies herself another John Naisbitt or Faith Popcorn. Unfortunately for her, NOTHING she ever predicts actually happens.

Actually, I think nadin is more like Moe.
She slaps them around, but she's still a Stooge.

Hold up a tick.. Per DU wisdom, didn't Borders help to kill the mom and pop bookstore?

Funny how their prejudices work when it pertains to corporate businesses. The ones that contribute to Democrats? Good. The ones that don't, but pretty much follow the same model as the ones they like? Bad. ...even though none of them ask for political affiliation when they offer people a job. One of the more insane ones in, IIRC, Minnesota, made a great case for Wal-Mart. A Mom and Pop will only hire probably 8-10 people. A Wal-Mart will hire 200 and draw in sales from a 50-mile radius. ...and it ain't like Mom and Pop's are paying their mythical "living wages", while Wal-Mart has stock options, chances for advancement, transfers, etc.
