Chrysler Auto Workers in Trenton Caught Smoking and Drinking During Lunch Breaks

Wow! This makes American workers look really bad! I am dumbfounded by the fact that FOX goes after these workers in this underhanded way. n It reminds me of Michael Moore going after the CEO of GM. Of course, FOX would never think of going after the fatcats in the same vein. Yes, they are sneaky. Spying on people even in the USA.

Am I wrong to think they should not be doing this sort of thing any more than they should be tapping phones, etc? It's not their job to go undercover and spy on workers to get dirt on them. If they are breaking the law, call the cops if you dare, but when you secretly film them aren't you party to their crimes?

********

myFOXdetroit.com - FOX 2 investigative reporter Rob Wolchek got a call from two different workers inside Chrysler's Trenton Engine Plant telling him they don't want to work with people who have been partying.

"It's dangerous," says one worker.

Ten months ago, Wolchek revealed how some workers at the Chrysler Jefferson North Plant in Detroit spent their lunch hour drinking beer. The video showing them going to the park to catch a buzz before heading back to work to finish their shifts gained worldwide attention. Subsequent disciplinary action of the workers was taken by Chrysler. The company does not condone this kind of behavior. (see story )

This time our video shows workers a mile from the plant, but just steps away from a United Auto Workers hall. It's the same kind of problem at a different location with a new method of having a good time; inhaling lunch before finishing a plant shift.

Smoking?  Who cares.  Drinking?  Fire their asses.

I don't know how that's even defensible.

They weren't smoking regular tobacco products, but that wacky tobaccy.

If you've spent time in an assembly plant, you've smelled the hemp smoke in the restrooms.
It's standard conduct for the UAW.

This is a major problem in papermills, too.  Of course, drinking is the official sport in these mill towns.  Incredibly dangerous around very lethal machinery.  They can kill you in a variety of very nasty ways unless you have your wits about you.

You'd never smell the dope smoke in a paper mill.

Probably a stupid question, but I've never been near a paper mill, at least that I know of.

People here are always referring to the stenches of paper mills.

Is it really that bad?

When I worked for a wholesale hardware company in Lincoln, it was right across the street from a chocolate candy factory; now, that was a stench, especially on hot days.  Russell Stover's.

It is difficult to descibe, sort of a combination of diaper pail, brewery, and chemical plant.

The only thing I have ever smelled that could compare with a paper mill is Lake Charles, LA, and Sulphur, TX.  EW.

Nothing new really, not at all. Guys I knew who worked in the Chevy engine plant in Buffalo say that's pretty much normal there, just another day.
My ex father in law worked in the American Axle plant in Buffalo. This sort of thing is not the rare exception. According to him if you needed a forklift you could almost never find one in the plant. You would have to take a walk across the parking lot and out the side gate which lined up with an alley straight across from it. Out the side gate, down the alley and turn the corner and voila! always 8 or 10 forklifts parked there by the back door of the local bar.
He had 34 years in and still that was not enough to get me in the door there. Even with that much time in he didn't have enough pull for the "privilege" of getting me in. If he did the going rate at the time was $10K cash in an envelope for your foreman.
My little sister's best friend worked there in the personnel office. Once, about '93 or so AA opened it's doors for a weekend and accepted applications from the public. More than 2500 applied for 35 job openings. I asked this girl the next time I saw her about that. She confirmed what I suspected. Not one of those people who applied were hired, not one. All spoken for beforehand and all under the table payolla.

Chemical pulping mills smell like sulphur.  They are pretty bad.  Little mill towns put up with it because the money is very good.
I always worked in groundwood mills, however.  Those smell like a Christmas tree.  You would definitely smell the smoke at one of those.

As for Romulux, I have never drank at lunch during a workday.  I can't imagine anything more boring than doing accounting with a buzz on.  Just wait till after work.

If I consume alcohol and come into work under the influence, I'd be fired and escorted off the property.

We had some Chrysler guys come in from Detriot yesterday to take their shitty Fiat's to our test track.  One guy tried to get two cars through our security gate at once.  The car hit the tire spikes and had body damage from the arm of the gate.  The fool got mad at me because he couldn't read a sign and obey a red light.  His meltdown was kind of funny.  I should've asked if he had a few drinks at lunch.

Wait for the posting by a DUer about the evil rethugican that tried to stop him from using his rental car and how he put you in your place...and got a standing "O" for it from the other customers.  :-)

It wasn't even a rental.  It was a test vehicle, not painted and wrapped in some kind of material.  Chrysler just uses our lot to unload their test cars.

Drinking at work is normal, DUmmies?

Guess I won't have to worry about any of you idiots being among my co-workers, with all the random durg and alcohol testing we do.

...

So, if I understand this post correctly:

1) This makes workers look bad. That's not to say they are bad they just look that way.

2) This is akin to Roger & Meat but when FOX does it it's sneaky.

3) FOX can only redeem itself by doing a redux of Roger & Meat...although this particular DUmbass may be too stoned to remember the current execs at Cry-slur are Obama cronies...and nobody wants to watch that again anyway

4) All investigative reporting on which DUmbasses rely to keep their moral crusader outrage stoked should give way to diming-out the wrong-doers

5) Apparently the worker who dimed-out the stoners isn't really a worker and doesn't count

6) creating unsafe working conditions by being stoned isn't as important as being allowed to sue a major corporation for hundreds of millions of dollars because it failed to keep its stoner employees from creating unsafe working conditions

7) He's trying desperately to tie this to the SKY News phone tapping brouhaha in the UK

What you're smelling is the paper mill burning lime which is used to bleach the paper white.

And you're right, it smells like crap to us, but to the people who work there it smells like money.

Yep, but this is the second time it's happened, not a rehash of the old story.

DUmmies, this is NOTHING new. I personally watched forklift drivers (Port of Sacramento/Union/1980's) drink while driving. Yes they could actually have a six pack of beer ON the forklift and drink said beer.  They also built a tall table so they could play cards between on-loading and off-loading trucks and not be "sitting down on the job". This was because other than driving a forklift for loading/un loading they did NOTHING. These jerks wouldn't lift a hand for anything. If you asked you would get the whole Union spiel about "job description". and "my contract says".
