PETA offers $1 million for lab-created meat
LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Animal rights activists are offering scientists a $1 million reward if they can produce commercially viable meat in a laboratory.
People for Ethical Treatment of Animals leaders say lab-grown meat could satisfy appetites without harming animals.
"People are surprised to learn that PETA is interested in lab-grown meat, but we have overcome our own revulsion at flesh-eating to champion a breakthrough that will mean a far kinder world for animals," said PETA President Igrid Newkirk.
The reward would go to the first scientist who develops a method that produces enough meat to be marketed in 10 U.S. states at a price competitive with prevailing chicken prices.
To cash in, scientists must create meat that is indistinguishable from regular chicken in taste and texture, according to a taste-test panel.
The deadline for the lab meat to go on sale to the public is June 30, 2012. Scientists must then prove that consumers purchased at least 100 pounds of lab meat in each state it is sold in.

I would serve them all up a big huge chunk of steak and tell them it is fake. I would love to do that to every vegetarian I know though. They bug me.

The idea of lab-grown meat is not crazy at all...

I dunno.
On one hand, we have these people insisting, "don't mess with nature."
As a general rule, I agree; usually it's not a good idea.
On the other hand, we have these same sorts of people trying to mess with nature.
Fake food is never a good idea.

I thought they had already gotten "cloned" meat figured out? different thing???

Farmers have been messing with nature for centuries. Messing with nature is fine as long as we do so carefully.

Wouldn't this involve genetically altered matter or cloning?
No matter - PETA males have fake meat (between their legs) anyway.

I win. All I have to do is show PETA a can of SPAM. :-)

I think they served "fake meat" in the cafeteria when I was in college.
"Chicken Fried Unidentified"
"Dreaded Breaded"
"Mystery Meat"
etc......
:-)

Well what the hell would I do with my extra roosters? I thought genetically engineered (if this isn't "engineering" genetics I don't know what is) was a big no-no in the organic, moonbat, tofurkey crowd.

I for one am going to build a lab and then raise a calf there. Lab-created meat! My million, please.

It is to a lot of them. At least to the anti-human environmentalist types.
Read the following, if you like, to get my drift...

... the “Exploit the Earth or Die†article is pretty good too.
Aren't we supposed to at the "whole meal in a pill" stage by now anyway? :-)

Don't even get me started on flying cars! :thatsright:

"Cell culture vat meat" and "Competitive with chicken prices" are light years apart, not four years away.

what happens to all the extra animals that are around once this "fake meat" ever becomes viable? They get put down.
