Local inmates are used to provide janitorial services to the state HQ.
One inmate regrets his life's choices and wants to enlist to in the guard to learn a skill and do something other than troll the streets.
However, he's on probation and cannot enlist while on such.
So he's thinking about asking his PO to just do the time in county lock-up to get it over and done with as his sentence would be shorter than the duration of his probation.

Depending on how much jail time he would have to complete, I might see where that option has some appeal to a person that honestly regrets his crime and wants to make something of their lives.

Even if he did not regret his act we are left with A) allowing the unrepentant to roam the streets on parole B) shortening their incarceration and ergo time monitored and confined away from potential victims would have just as much appeal
Personally, I think this one simply lacks direction and focus. If he's wiling to endure the hardships of military life to gain those features I'm all for it.
It held merit in my own life.

Well, not to put too fine a point on it, but there's also the aspect of three hots and a cot. He wouldn't have to worry where his next meal is coming from by finishing up his time in the slammer.
