Radio makes people happy, TV, Internet don't

The Radio Advertising Bureau in Britain determined radio listeners have higher levels of happiness and energy than consumers of other media, researchers say.

Sparkler Research, on behalf of the Radio Advertising Bureau, surveyed 1,000 consumers in Britain via their smart phones, asking which media, if any, they were consuming and to rate their mood.

Those taking in any media -- TV, radio or the Internet -- were happier and had more energy than those consuming no media at all, and radio helped raise happiness and perceived energy, Radio Today reported.

That might explain a few things.  I'd like to see this done on a larger scale, though.

Is it possible that it's because there is less news on the radio most of the time?

ETA:  Or less annoying commercials?

You're joking, right? :-)

I don't know what the statistics are for radio, but I know that for every half-hour of television programming (prime time), there are seven to nine minutes of commercials.  Those guys on the radio take a break every 20-25 minutes.

I didn't mean less commercials, but less annoying ones.

I'd be willing to believe this. I have a radio atop my fridge that I leave on most of the day rather the watch TV. I get news, weather and music all from on radio station and can easily do other things when it's on, unlike with TV.

I know I prefer the radio over the TV.

I listen to the radio all day long at work, a mix of sports talk, politics and general talk.  The only TV I watch are sports and a few shows that I record on the DVR.  I'm much happier than your average DUmmy.

I think there's some truth to the radio thing, and it transcends commercials, shock jocks, Rush, and everybody in between.

Radio, much moreso than TV, forces you to actively listen if you're going to actually understand what's being said. There is no visual guidance, no visual cue or direction. You either hear and process what's going on, or you don't.

With TV, seems to me, you can be much less involved and still call yourself a "watcher."

I really need to get a small radio for my office at work......
