Some of you know that I work for a NYS agency. Now the rest of those reading the thread will know, too. Well, over the weekend, someone in the local media leaked a report showing the positions that would be laid off if the Governor (Cuomo) didn't get concessions from the union I belong to. I figured that, with over 17 years in, they'd have to work to get to me. Apparently, they did their homework, and I got the notice today that, barring anything major happening, I'm getting laid off on July 22nd. Since I'm the last one out, I'd be the first one rehired. HR told me that I got 2 1/2 years added to my total time due to my veteran's status, so I've got a bit over 20 years service with NYS.
I have to say that I'm a tad disappointed, but I'm not wallowing in it. I made a call to my parents almost immediately, as my father is a supervisor at Saratoga Race Course, and they'll be looking for people for the meet which starts on July 22nd (what a coincidence!). But, he says that NYRA is not too forthcoming about the job situation right at the moment. If I have to, I'll work at the local Stewart's shop (Carl can tell you about those) rather than collect unemployment. One thing I'm not going to do is to drink over this. I went over 20 months sober last weekend, and a whole buttload of work would be gone with the wind if I did that. Plus, I've got my daughter and wife to worry about. I ahven't told my wife yet, because she'd race for the most illogical conclusion right from the start, and cling to it so hard that a Caterpillar D-7 couldn't move her off of it. (Rachel Corrie could have taken lessons from my wife.)
I know I'll land on my feet. I just wish the fall would hurry up and be over. I'm actually alright about this--God has a Lesson in this somewhere. It's up to me to find out where.

Great attitude BSS! Keep us updated and good luck.
KC
-
Sorry to hear that, yes a good attitude, and our prayers are with you.
-
Oh Wow. I'm so sorry BSS.
Does 20 yrs not qualify for retirement pay as a NY state employee? It does in this state. I asked because my best friend works for the University and her job is in jeopardy also, and she's almost at 20 yrs. If her layoff doesn't come for another couple of months, she will be able to collect her retirement benefits. While not as much as her salary, it's more than unemployment. She's hoping that her knowledge and capabilities will enable her to stay as long as possible, but she's also one of the higher paid in her department and retirement eligible, so that could also work against her.
Why wouldn't you collect unemployment since you're entitled to it? It isn't like you've done something wrong in your job to get fired or that you are not interested in working. You're being laid off through no fault of your own.
Good on you for realizing that having a drink will not solve anything. You have done what many cannot and what even more aren't willing to try. H5 for that.
Not sure that not telling your wife is a good idea. While I understand you feel that it's easier and you may feel that you are "protecting" her, ( I live with someone who thinks the same way) I can tell you, that I deal much better with knowing the bad stuff up front than I do with being "protected"....especially if I find out the "bad" on my own. Doesn't matter which one is doing the "protecting", it's supposed to be a partnership against all external forces.
Sending prayers.
-
Very sorry to hear of the layoff, but add me to the list of those who congratulate you for your positive outlook. God doesn't give stuff to us that we can't handle.
Something will surface - it always does.
:cheersmate: <------- uh, maybe not..... :-)
-
Sorry to hear this, hope you land squarely on your feet.
-
Sounds like you'll do fine.
Congratulations on 20 years.

Yeh, at least get your money back you have had taken from your check every pay period!
Hoping unemployment is short!
-
Sorry to hear that the Obamaconomy got one of us.
Speaking as a fellow that owned and ran only CAT D-7's for 20 years...uh...can we see a picure of the woman one won't move?
:-).....just joking man.... :-)
-
Good luck BSS, the staying sober thing is a sound plan. Don't lose sight of the family being the first importance in the big picture.
It may not turn out as bad as it looks now, agencies give out those notices on a 'Worst case' basis so if they get any fiscal relief before the drop-dead date to bring it in above that 'Worst case,' they don't necessarily end up cutting as deep as the required notices would otherwise permit.
-
Sorry to hear that BlueState. On the bright side, Big Brotha claims he's finally been able to turn around George Bush's horrible economy (the reason he takes so many vacations, is that turning that horrible Bush Economy is such exhaustive work). That should mean that you'll have a fresh opportunity to carry 3 or 4 freeloading, stinking leftists on your back in no time. :whatever:
-
Sorry to hear this, we are right there with you. Kevin is using this as an opportunity to do some stuff on his own.
-
Sorry to hear this. Hope the best for you. I agree with others who think you should get the unemployment insurance due you while you look for something. Even if you go to work part time and get partial payments like my wife is doing. You and we know you are not going to sit around with your thumb up your ass sucking on a bong!
-
Sorry to hear this, we are right there with you. Kevin is using this as an opportunity to do some stuff on his own.
DITTO me BEG; got my news in April but can stick around till the end of October.
Job got outsourced to Punjab with Accenture in New Delhi.
Nearly 10 years with the firm I work for. Oh happy joy joy. :censored:
Anway, sorry to hear about fellow CC members going thru this. Hopefully, we'll all come out on the positive end.
-
I am so sorry to hear this, but applaud your positive outlook. You are in my prayers this works itself out soon.
-
BSS you have the right attitude! Hang in there! Like you said, you'll land on your feet but it's the fall you have to get through and I know you will!
-
I'm sorry. :(
This makes me sad. :(

When I got home, my wife took it well, which surprised me. She didn't race to that "most illogical conclusion." She even said that we should just pull up stakes and head to Texas to start anew. That one threw me. My AA sponsor said that, if it comes to that, I should take the unemployment for a while and work on my sobriety. He's probably right, as my one sponsee is currently moving his family back to South Korea, and I would seem to have some time on my hands, coming up. He also suggested tending my two plots over in my church garden, if this isn't resolved by the 22nd of July. My co-workers are all of the mind that it will be, by then.
What galls me (and them) is that my title was put on the endangered list by the actions of one individual who is in our Central Region office. He's an arrogant prick, who makes a habit of filing work grievances just to piss people off, it would seem. So, his position in that office was eliminated. But, since he's got over 30 years service, he bumped someone. The other two that had their positions eliminated are in one of our Southern Region offices. One bumped a co-worker in that office, and the other bumped me. They also filed out-of-title work grievances, for stuff that I (and my co-worker up here who is getting bumped) do rather routinely. The guy who has the 30+ years even went on a local newspaper's blog and bragged about his bumping of someone. The management in my office is going to deal with that, and his general anal-retentive personality, in a pretty aggressive way, by overloading the "new" people with work back-and-forth across the state. One week, overnight in Batavia. The next week, overnight(s) in Plattsburgh. The next week, overnights at Hauppague on Long Island. The next week, overnight in Jamestown. The next week, overnights in Watertown. And so on. Management is pretty adamant in wanting us who are getting bumped to stay. My co-worker does work on the side as a stone mason, so he won't be hurting for money at all. He's single, and his truck is paid for.
I'll be alright. Thank you all for responding . . . :blowkiss: to the women, and :cheersmate: to the guys.
-
Great attitude. I wish you all the very best.
I live in FL and I've been w/out work for nearly two years.
-
Sorry to hear that BSS but you have a great attitude so you'll do fine!
-
Sorry to hear, especially the way it happened.
Personally, Saratoga in late summer sounds great. I've been there a couple time with horses.
Whatever comes your way, your great attitude will be an asset.
-
You're going to be fine, sir, even if it might get a little bumpy.
God takes of those pleasing in God's sight.
-
One thing I'm not going to do is to drink over this. I went over 20 months sober last weekend, and a whole buttload of work would be gone with the wind if I did that.
We just don't drink, no matter what. Heard that anywhere?
-
I was lucky. I had 36 years in a corp when they shut us down. they offered early retirement. i smoked the tires on my truck getting outta there my last day
well when one door close's it usually opens another
best a luck

Great attitude. I wish you all the very best.
I live in FL and I've been w/out work for nearly two years.
Sorry to hear this. And really sorry Blue State. As everyone else said, you have the right attitude. I'm glad you're sticking to the AA program. That would be the real disaster.
The economy in Florida really is terrible, and the pols are ridiculous here. The City of Sarasota wastes money right and left.
SR got the boot in February after his stroke. They said if he couldn't come back in a week or so, his job was gone and he'd be "separated" from the company.
We're learning to live with it. I suspect they'll find a way to keep you, at least hope so. I guess it all depends on the company or employer. You'll be in my prayers.
-
I've been a magnet for pink slips and layoffs since I lost my job at Ford in 2007. Something always turns up. It always does.
Take therefore no thought for the morrow: for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself.
-
Move to Texas like us, we can live like hippies on a commune. :-)
-
Aagh, it sux that the troublemaker isn't going to suffer.
Good thing I believe in karma. :-)
Your head and heart are in the right place, BSS. You're going to do just fine.
-
Ahhhh. The wonderment and delight of being unionized. So what the ones whose positions were eliminated had more time in. Now they are stepping into jobs they don't know and they are already filing grievances? Wow.
KC
-
I'm so sorry to hear about this, BSS. Your head does seem in the right place, and that's of the utmost importance.
I should take the unemployment for a while and work on my sobriety
In my case, this would not work for me, and it would be absolutely counter-productive. I once had a spell of unemployment, about 7 years ago. I went into a very dark place and consumed unhealthy quantities at all hours of the day. Not good.
You'll know what's the best for you, though, you're a smart guy who'll land on top in no time.
-
Sorry to hear that but it is good that you have a positive attitude. Whatever you do, don't start drinking again. That just makes matters worse. I have been down that road you are on. Keep going to the meetings and keep your chin up.
-
Hang in there, BSS. Amazing how only the backstabbing assholes are the ones who manage to hang around in civil service, ain't it?

Hey now! :bird: I just got my gov't job back!
They are laying off 125 city employees tomorrow and cutting everyone's pay by 4.9%. They say it's equivelant to losing 12 of their 13 holidays.

my wife works for the state. and we're worried she may get axed. the signs are there. also last month to save cost they ordered all thermostats moved up to 80. she says its like an oven there.

I know you're serious, I'm just incredulous that they'd put it like that when so many people in the workforce DON'T get paid for holidays off.
Way to win sympathy there, union ****sticks.

that's awful....there has never been a layoff here since it's existance but then again they bring in money constantly so we aren't costing the taxpayer's anything.

she works for the dept of juvenile corrections. the state has already closed two branch office's locally.
-
I can always use a hand up here on the Ranch Blue! As long as you're not allergic to domesticated poo!
Hehehehe!
On second thought, I might be a bad influence, as AA is against my religion! Besides, who'd keep Johnny Walker in business if I started goin' to those meetins?

You don't have to go to meetings. I do, to keep the dreams from roaring back.
And domesticated poo . . . you do know about The Heiress, don't you? :???:
My wife said to me today, "You didn't get all of that food to sit on your ass and eat Bonbons, did you? We'll be alright." I know we will be, but I just don't like going through this. All because of someone else.

damn, I am sure juvenile crime hasn't gone down so what a bs move by the gov't :???:

One week later . . . and my union and the Governor's office came to a tentative agreement. Layoffs are rescinded, so I'm happy.
I did hear about a couple of things that the NYS Department of Civil Service offers--resume-writing, for example. I seriously need to update mine. I've heard about a few interesting opportunities in the area in private industry that I'd maybe qualify for, and I'd be a fool if I didn't at the least prepare for maybe having to go on interviews (the membership still has to ratify the contract).
Opening Day at Saratoga Race Course is a go! :yahoo:

That is great news. Looking for a job is a b!tch especially when you are unemployed.
-
Sounds like it'll owrk out then, BSS, good news. I have had everything go south on me before, but always managed to land on my feet and move on. The one thing I'd say is NEVER burn any bridges, generally I've found that it's almost always a really bad idea to do the thing that is really going to feel good when you're upset, because the upset passes but the consequences of acting like an asshole live on forever.

Not. THAT particular asshole has never had to land on his feet, he was raised on a silver spoon from the git-go (Which he used to snort coke with for several years) and has had the wind of affirmative action and Liberal guilt at his back ever since.

I resurrected this thread because the vote is being announced today. I've heard some rumors about it passing, but I've also seen an article by Fred Dicker of the New York Post that quoted "unnamed Democrat Party sources" as saying that they feel the chances of passage are 50/50. If it doesn't pass, I get the layoff notice tomorrow. I should know by 2 PM EDT.
-
Pullin' for ya, BSS.......We just don't need that kind of stuff in our lives right now.

The results came back. The contract was rejected by 3000 votes out of 36000 cast.
I expect my layoff notice tomorrow.
Shit happens. I need to get my resume updated anyway.

Even though I would absolutely hate to leave this area, it's crossed my mind.
I had one guy who I know (and whose girlfriend is a co-worker of mine) tell me yesterday, "Why should I have to pay an additional $80 a paycheck for health insurance? I voted no." It was all I could do to maintain control over my emotions. Things like that have a way of coming back . . . and even though I'm trying to get better in my life through AA, I have a long memory. I just hope, when it finally does catch up to him, that I don't laugh too hard at him.

Think about what Deb said. There are still opportunities down here. I know what a long distance move entails, though.
When people consider coming South I like to recommend the Raleigh area to check out first. Just a personal fave with RTP, 3 major universities, bunch of smaller schools, lots of industry. Major drawback is the governor, but she can't be in office forever.
Wishing you the best.

*AHEM* I'm a Mets fan, not a Yankees fan.
But, something really strange has happened--Cuomo has asked the union to revote. Here's why I think that happened. The column by Fred Dicker, that I referenced upthread, had as its' last paragraph a veiled inference to the DNC not wanting Cuomo to do this. Someone from the DNC called Cuomo, or one of his top aides, last night and said, "If you have any ideas of possibly running for President at any time in the future, you will not allow the layoffs to proceed."
-
Damn, BSS, that guy you know just doesn't get it, does he? Let's see what happens next. Stay positive, stay strong. You're in the water quality arena right? These are hard skills that everybody in the country needs (as well as every papermill). It's not like you're Administrative Assistant to the Assistant Administrator, Paperclips & Staples Section, Department of Administration, Central Sector, Eastern Region. :-)
(P.S. There really is a government job called Administrative Assistant to the Assistant Adminstrator, Department of Administration).

Yeah--I tested drinking water for 13 years. That's got to be worth something to someone, hopefully AMD in Malta.

If you do water quality, you really should check down here.
Try ORNL....Oak Ridge Nat'l Labs and TVA...TN Valley Authority. With all the water down here and all the nasty stuff buried in the ground, there might be something available. Even if not with them specifically, there are lots of private sector companies around that contract with both.
Checked this site out and got 35 pages of jobs....
http://jobs.ornl.gov/
Found a "watershed" something or other on this site...said it had to do with water quality.

The notice just came--at least I was ready for it. A whole bunch of my co-workers weren't. A whole swath--45 or so--of us are gone.
-
Did they give a timeline? Why weren't your co-workers ready for it like you were?

Might also want to look at USAjobs. It has all the openings for jobs with the federal govt. including civilians hired to work with the military.

I'm sorry BSS. As you know we have moved several times for jobs and this last time because of a job loss and currently for a new job. It is expensive to move even when you have a company moving you. I hope you find something soon. Also remember, it seems that when these thing happen they are better for you in the long run. It may not look like it right now but it will one day soon.

Bingo. We don't know what God's plan is, but knowing He's got one is a comfort.

Did they give a timeline? Why weren't your co-workers ready for it like you were?
October 19th is the last day. The reason why a lot of my co-workers weren't ready for it is that they weren't hit with notices in July, like I was. A whole slew of accountants, forty Real Property Analysts, and five of the nine Complex Real Propery Appraisers in my grade were hit this time around. Last time, only a few RPAs and three CRPAs were nailed.
I know that God's got a plan. As I've heard in my AA meetings the past two nights, "Your needs will be met. Wants? Probably not."

You should apply to Analysys Inc. in Austin TX. They do water, oil, and volatile chemical cleaning/testing.
