Russian scientists expect humanity to encounter alien civilisations within the next two decades, a top Russian astronomer said on Monday.
"The genesis of life is as inevitable as the formation of atoms ... Life exists on other planets and we will find it within 20 years," said Andrei Finkelstein, director of the Russian Academy of Sciences' Applied Astronomy Institute, according to the Interfax news agency.
Speaking at an international forum dedicated to the search for extraterrestrial life, Finkelstein said 10% of the known planets circling suns in the galaxy resemble Earth.
If water can be found there, then so can life, he said, adding that aliens would most likely resemble humans with two arms, two legs and a head.

Unless FINKELSTINE ( gawd I love saying that name ) actually sees a bunch of aliens heading here with coolers of beer and beach balls he is just talking out of his "butt-ski" and trying to hold on to funding. I have a feeling a bean counter in Moscow was going over the budget and found that little hidden away money pit.

The Military will naturally want to know what the heck they are doing here, did them come in peace, why now show up after thousands of years of brief visits to mutelate cattle, kidnap people for physical experiments and spy on the Jews in the Old Testament. Not to mention the Hindu's and India.
The Religious will believe they are Gods Angels, The Scientists will be so fascinated with their technology they will at some point begin to worship them. Ignore the warning bells that tell them to tread carefully.
Me, I will have a shot gun on hand at all times----until these whatevers are by law declared human, or Citizens of all country's, Screw it I will shoot first and ask questions later.

"Encounter?"
Perhaps finding proof that life exists on another planet, but actually "encountering" such life? I think not. Proxima Centauri, the closest star, is 4.2 LIGHT YEARS from earth, and it may or may not have a planetary system, which may or may not contain a planet that would support life. You do the math.

I'm of the camp that thinks maybe, just maybe, we shouldn't be trying to contacting anyone with the intelligence to traverse the stars to get here. It didn't work out well for previous less-advanced civilizations.

Why in two decades? If they're out there, and capable of getting here, they'd already be in touch. Frankly the fact that they aren't is probably a good thing, looking at the fate of less-technically-advanced civilizations coming into contact with more-technically-advanced ones in our own history. Plus there's always the chance they might decide to wipe our slate just because of our potential for making problems for them in the future. Just because they might have nice rides, that doesn't mean they'd be nice people.
