EPA, US Coast Guard to enforce air pollution requirements for vessels operating in US waters

The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the US. Coast Guard (USCG) will jointly enforce US and international air pollution requirements for vessels operating in US waters. The requirements establish limits on NOx emissions and require the use of fuel with lower sulfur content. The most stringent requirements apply to ships operating within 200 nautical miles of the coast of North America.

The large marine diesel engines that provide propulsion and auxiliary power on many ocean-going vessels emit significant amounts of pollution. The memorandum of understanding (MOU) signed by EPA and the USCG outlines the agencies’ commitment to jointly enforce federal and international laws that EPA projects could prevent 12,000-31,000 premature deaths annually by 2030.

30k deaths a year from boat smog?  Really?  A similar number (http://www-fars.nhtsa.dot.gov/Main/index.aspx) of people die from car accidents as from pollution caused by boats?

Thanks, Obama.

Of course by making international ships meet these standards, costs will go up somewhere.

Don't worry. Obama plans to make sure that more people continue to die in car crashes than from boat smog. By changing the CAFE standards to 56 MPG, cars will be more dangerous to drive.

I guess shipping is going green...sails and all that.

Hope the DUmmies like over ripe fruits and veggies. Obama and Me-Shall will have theirs flown in on AF 1.

That all fits into the "master plan."  When deaths skyrocket, they can lower speed limits everywhere "for our own good."  The income from the increased number of speeding tickets will make local governments happy...and eventually, they will have everything worked out to make it seem like a good idea to drive a car that can actually run on wind and solar - with top speeds of 20 mph...

Yeah, the coast guard saving lives and stopping drug smuggling isn't near as important and fuel emissions testing.

I can't research it now but a few months ago I read an article about a researcher in CA getting the treatment from liberals at his university because he debunked a report used by the CA legislature to write emission laws that were putting people out of work. The academic freedom organization FIRE was o top of it. Basically the researcher of the report was using typical liberal research methods of fudging data and just making shit up and his report claimed 30k were being killed annually.

Why do I get the feeling that turd has bobbed its way downstream all the way to DC.
