I need to stand up for my own.. Liberal Christians..

Not all people who are people of faith are kooks.. believe in creationism.. believe in discrimination..etc.. far from it.. just the opposite.

People of faith have been on the front lines of change since day one. Yes we have sects and religious communities who are oppressive.. who limit women .. but that is not the whole religious community..just like all Iowans are not tea partiers.. But many tea partiers are Iowans ..

As a liberal Christian, we are targeted by crazies who do not even understand the core of the religion they claim to be a part of.

http://edition.cnn.com/2008/CRIME/07/28/church.shooting /

And that is true for all faith bodies.

We have had our commericals on TV..the mass media pulled them off in 2004 When we had a simple commerical that all people are welcome to the house of God. Yep that was threatening to mass media.

We need to support the churches on the front line of social change.

Whatever.

2. Liberal Christians are even ridiculed by people here at DU with athiest mockery about the "sky fairy" or the "invisible man in outer space" and other such rhetoric that mocks progressive people of faith who like to pray.

How come the primitives can never spell "atheist" correctly?

5. Indeed. It's disgusting. And I'm not even a practicing Christian.

7. Evangelical atheists are as bad in their own way as evangelical Christians

I think they're worse; such glum sullen unhappy people, atheists.

14. I'm an atheist, but I think that type of derision is very weak-minded.

Christians, like atheists, come in all stripes. Some are wonderful and caring people, some are hypocritical (or hypercritical) a-holes.

Live and let live.

4. it is unfortunate that Christianity has been hijacked by religious zelots that Jesus would have called hypocrites and warned people about......

8. Yes it is..When I hear someone like a Limbaugh pontificate on things that are 180 degrees opposite of Christian teachings of preference for the poor..which just goes to show, they have never read what they say promote.

10. Yes, too often it is forgotten that..Baptists, for instance, led the charge against slavery and became the largest pacifist group by the end of the 19th century.

Catholics, for all we like to demonize them for some things we don't like, is one of the largest charitable providers on the planet.

And so it goes-- with so many Christians of all denominations out there doing God's work that they don't have time to get on the news.

12. One of my best friends is a devout, liberal Catholic

One of his biggest crosses to bear, no pun intended, are the Catholics who profess Pro-Life equals Real Catholic. He sighs whenever he mentions it. I don't bring it up or rub his face in it. I'm sure he has callouses from all the FFPs.

Being a recovering Southern Baptist, I launch into them all the time.

I'm now an agnostic pantheist.

When my fellow alum Skins gets back from vacation, I'm sure this campfire is deleted.

How can one be a Christian and not believe in creation?

What is a "liberal Christian?" Someone who tithes to Planned Parenthood and begs others to forgive them for believing in God?

We sure as hell are and about time someone recognizes it! Our Churches every 2 weeks have envelopes for Catholic Charities etc. and for those on the left who like to condemn the Catholic Church, it was the Catholic Church that built the 1st AIDS Wing so that those with AIDS would die with dignity, what do we get in return? gay activists going to Communion and spitting out the Host onto the ground.

So your friend is a Cafeteria Catholic, then? Because he cannot be really, devoutly Catholic and think it's okay to 1) disregard the Church's teaching on life and 2) rip an unborn human limb from limb because it's an inconvenience.

Yeah, "liberal" and "Christian" don't go together.

It's not that they're contradictory.

It's just that Christianity has no "ideology."  Christianity is Christianity, pure and simple and nothing else.

I am not sure which will have a worse penalty in eternity...those that mock God or those that try to claim Him and then lie about His Word.

DUmmies deserve to be miserable,it is the path in life they choose.

My thought would be "liberal Christian" = "Unitarian"

As I understand it, they basically don't believe in anything at all.........they just enjoy the ice cream socials and barbeques.........

Just read the bible, cut out the parts you don't like and voilà! Christianity without the parts you don't like.

Works for any religion out there and is 100% effective.

red letter Christians

If the DUmmies did this, it would drive them mad.  John 14:6 alone would cause an aneurysm.
