In his new song, "A Better Place," Glen Campbell sings, "I need the ones I love Lord/More and more each day."
The lyric is more personal than the world knows: In an exclusive interview with PEOPLE, Campbell, 75, and his wife, Kim, reveal that the singer has Alzheimer's disease.
The couple have decided to go public with Glen’s diagnosis because he's hoping to say farewell with a final slate of live performances this fall – and they want his fans to be aware of the musician's condition.

I think it's real class to announce this so his fans don't think he's drunk or using drugs during his performances.

Loved him in True Grit.

Once I was really sick with the flu when I was about 6 years old. My dad knew I loved Rhinestone Cowboy so he hooked our record player up to speakers that would play upstairs and played that song over and over for me. It still makes me smile.

But hated that girl............With a passion.

From the little I've read, she was difficult to work with.

I agree. It's a miracle that he'll be able to do a single concert, let alone a tour. It's so sad. My mom had it, and it's hell.

I never liked Kim Darby at all.

Listening to those two songs again after so many years, I'm struck by the relative thickness of the backup orchestra. Lots of strings and relatively subdued brass. Riding above all that is Glen's unpretentious tenor singing Jim Webb songs as only he can do. These songs represent a time when crossover from country into pop was done artfully and tastefully. And you could actually hear and understand the lyrics.
Glen was/is a helluva guitar picker too. I remember seeing him play on his TV show and being blown away by his technique and artistry. And he was a good looking guy too, and that certainly helped him with his foray into acting.
All that said, he did look pathetic a few years back when he was arrested for DWI. But I pray that his final years will not be the struggle it is for many Alzheimer's patients and their families.

Geez, that's too bad. My Mom works with Alzheimer's patients...such a dreadful, unforgiving disease...
