Obama ‘Withdrawal’ Plan Would Leave More Troops In Afghanistan Than When He Began His Presidency

By Zaid Jilani posted from ThinkProgress Security on Jun 22, 2011 at 11:45 am

Today, President Obama is expected to announce the withdrawal of as many as 33,000 troops from the war in
Afghanistan by the end of 2012. While this announcement is largely being portrayed as a serious reduction
of troops, it is important to look at the numbers in context.

ThinkProgress has assembled the following graph showing that if the reductions are carried out as planned,
the United States would still have far more troops in Afghanistan than it did when Obama came into office
and more than at any point during former president George W. Bush’s administration:

2. With the 33,000 troops being pulled out and nothing to do

that should be enough to at least start a couple more wars........
Perhaps invading Greece and Italy would be a good idea, that would give the troops a little
bit of a break and these countries are having trouble with their governments......... just saying

Obama knows that if he brought too many troops home, especially National Guard troops, the unemployment rate might jump.

Obama actually doing something he said he would do would be surprise. This guy is a real disaster.

I'm sure his legions of apologists will be by to spin this......

12. Of course. Afghanistan was undermanned and virtually ignored for 7 years.

Had we never gone into Iraq and put those kind of resources in Afghanistan back in 03, we wouldn't be having any of these conversations right now.

Obama ran on the intention of actually TRYING in Afghanistan. I won't argue with those who say its no longer worth trying. I think there is merit to that. But lets not pretend that this wasn't the plan he ran on and lets not pretend that the Bush administration was ever interested in a successful mission there.

Obama is not planning on a successful mission either.  He is letting politics dictate troop strength.

14. No one listened to what the man actually said as a candidate.

He said he'd put more troops in Afghanistan.

He did.

Now, he's bringing some of them home.

Simple.

If one listens, that is.
