Many Black New Yorkers Are Moving to the South (NYT)

Seeking New Life, New York Blacks Heed South’s Tug
By DAN BILEFSKY
In Deborah Brown’s family lore, the American South was a place of whites-only water fountains and lynchings under cover of darkness. It was a place that black people like her mother had fled.
But for Ms. Brown, 59, a retired civil servant from Queens, the South now promises salvation.
Three generations of her family — 10 people in all — are moving to Atlanta from New York, seeking to start fresh economically and, in some sense, to reconnect with a bittersweet past. They include Ms. Brown, her 82-year-old mother and her 26-year-old son, who has already landed a job and settled there.
“I feel a strong spiritual pull to go back to the South,†Ms. Brown said...

2. Seeing that the Northeast is heavily Democratic.
the region can afford to cede some of their votes other parts of the country. Virginia and North Carolina are not as "red" as the used to be.

5. Based on all that's going on in NC right now, I'd say it's...
bright Jesse Helms red. I just hope (there's that word again) that voters perceive the Rs as having overplayed their hand, and it backfires on them ROYALLY come November 2012. If the voter suppression bill passes this July, Dems really have their work cut out for them.

3. some are leaving because of NYC race relations?
Well, they're in for a shock then. Leaving NYC to go to the Deep South in hopes of better race relations is about as upside down as you can get.
It's about like someone moving from San Francisco to Mississippi because of the bad relations between straights and gays in SF.

8. i don't think any black person is that stupid
especially people who have spent time in the south. and if you are in a neighborhood with nothing but black professional in atlanta, you might have less racism to ndeal with than you do in la or new york. most of the black people i know who are leaving california for the south are educated professionals.

7. Good luck to them...
...Incidents like the police brutality the woman described aren't unknown. Segregation is still in effect, it's just not legislated.
Moving to Atlanta, Charlotte or Raleigh/Durham is one thing. Moving to Birmingham, Mobile, Jackson, Memphis is quite another. There's still plenty of racial friction in the South, it's just of a different type than what they are used to.
Do they have massive Confederate flags beside the interstate highways in New York? Do they celebrate Confederate History Month? Is there a gargantuan carving of Confederate generals on a mountain outside New York?
And if they're Democrats, they can kiss any future votes for president goodbye, as long as we have the electoral college system.

It's funny how they use the excuse of race as the reason people are leaving the northeast when the truth is is that the states run by democrats have higher taxes, higher housing prices, higher prices for everything, fewer jobs and opportunities, and idiotic nanny-state regulations.
It has nothing to do with race and everything to do with economics.

Oh, please. You wanna know racist, you dumb white bread liberal yankee? Go look in a mirror. The closest I've seen most white liberal yankees get to have a black man at their table, he was taking their order from them. I've been stared at in New Jersey because my wife and I were at a table together with a black friend of mine and his Mexican wife, and by people who should have known how impolite that was.
(No, I didn't take a poll, but where I was at is safely democratic, so probably.)

You think that's aimed at blacks? No, it's aimed at you. Yankees, progessives, liberals, whatever think everyone should think just like you. Worse, you're willing to use whatever force is available to try to make people think like you. Those flags are just reminders that we don't, and we won't, and you will never muster the force to make us.

The even better part is that the ones leaving for the South are the ones who might at least look at conservative ideas.

DUmmies, we were forced to leave Texas for CA two years ago because of my husband's job. We sold our house here in CA and are getting the hell out of this backassword state and going back to Texas (we close on July 18th). Google jobs created in Texas over the past two years vs total jobs created in the US. Google how many jobs CA has lost (mainly to Texas). People are leaving the hell holes you libs have created, you are failures with everything you touch.

Your last sentence is spot on!

DUmmies, if you don't think Blue states have de facto segregation, drive up through Oakland to Berkeley. In Oakland, almost every person you see is Black, but as you move more and more North neighborhoods improve significantly until you reach yuppie Berkeley, where the majority of people are White, with a good number of East Asians.
Or, try Fremont, which has a huge (Asian) Indian population, or some of the neighborhoods in East San Jose where almost everybody is hispanic and all the store signs are in Spanish.

Speaking as a Deep South boy myself, I welcome any honest, hardworking person of integrity to Dixie, regardless of color. I'd rather have a hundred black families of character than a single, asshole white liberal of the DU persuasion move into my town.
-
Without reading this stupid DUmp comments, good for the family for all landing jobs quickly. I find that incredibly lucky considering how crappy the unemployment rates are everywhere. Good for them.
FU, DU.

Speaking as a lightly-taxed, fairly free, very content resident of red state hell, I do not welcome a single damn democrat to my part of Dixie, regardless of their integrity, work ethic, or color.
They should perish in the corrupt shitholes they have created, because if they come here, they'll immediately begin the creation of a new shithole. Fortunately, few of them can afford to move.

Whaddayamean racism?!?! Those black people oughta do this! And those black people oughta do that! And if they were smart enough to think on their own they never do...</liberal>

Voter suppression? Oh, you mean requiring people to have to show proof of eligibility to vote before they actually vote? Hmm, Ok, am I to assume you think all black people don't have ID's? Maybe too stupid to have ID's? Do tell, DEMOCRAT, because it seems to be that you're living up to your history as a DEMOCRAT.
BTW, did it ever occur to you fools that requiring ID's actually PROTECTS someone's vote? An illegal vote cancels a legal vote out, fools.

14. Racism's still alive and kicking here in Florida
Oh, this is rish.

Watsonville or Castroville are non-white also.

The cliches and ignorance of the standard DUmpmonkey are in full display on that thread.

:banghead: Please as a long term resident of NC. Things are bad enough here!! I want to discourage these blue-staters(Yankees) from coming here. Spread the word the KKK runs wild, we all wear bib overalls and go barefoot year round. Chitlins and grits are mandatory eating daily. Oh and cue the banjo music

Yeah, Jackson Miss. is full of professionals. Professional criminals.
Counting the police force and the mayor's office. Come for the fun, stay for the nightly gun and knife show. Starts at sundown.

It's why it has turned into one giant donut, with the hole being Jackson. Brandon, Byram (my home), Terry, Ridgeland, Madison, Flowood, hell, even f'n Pearl is growing. Jackson, the center of it all, has turned into a hellhole. I don't even think Clinton is that safe anymore.
-
The North is more segregated than the South. Just look at places like Chicago or Detroit. You even have Polish, Italian, German, Korean, Mexican, etc. Towns.
-
Jackson, the center of it all, has turned into a hellhole.
More than you can imagine.

I'm goin' to Jackson, I'm gonna mess around,
Yeah, I'm goin' to Jackson, look out Jackson town.

More than you can imagine.
My parents still live in Byram and I go back about 3-4 times per year. Half of my FB friends live in the area. Old schoolmates, etc.
