Should we regulate cat ownership to save birds?
Edited on Mon May-30-11 02:39 PM by Liberal_in_LA
I have 2 indoor cats. Although they are well fed, I can see from their behavior at the windows that they would gladly kill every bird and squirrel. But I'm surprised to see that cats wearing bells are still able to catch birds.

:siren: Should we regulate cat ownership to save birds?:siren:

While dog defenders point to the lack of evidence in the encyclopedic GGNRA proposal, there are several studies pointing to cats' predatory habits. Elsa Bonnaud of the Mediterranean Institute of Ecology and Palaeoecology has said that house cats may be responsible for "pose a significant threat to almost 10 percent of critically endangered birds, mammals and reptiles."

A study by the American Bird Conservancy attributes a billion small-animal deaths a year to cats. And the study is careful to point out that feral cats aren't the only culprits: Well-fed cats and even cats that wear bells hunt successfully.

The Conservancy compared two parks in the East Bay Regional Park District with similar habitat.

One park had no cats, but more than 25 cats were being fed daily in the other park. There were almost twice as many birds seen in the park with no cats as in the park with cats. California Thrasher and California Quail, both ground-nesting birds, were seen during surveys in the no-cat area, whereas they were never seen in the cat area.

2. No... let them kill the ****ing birds
I live with my brother who has three cats and two birds. The birds do nothing but poop everywhere and squawk all day... They never ****ing shut up... I hate them. I only wish the cats would kill them.

Killer. It looks like Liberal_in_LA is alone in it's interest here. I have heard small conversations about this very issue IRL though.
You really can't make this stuff up!

His birds have more rights to live there than you do, mooch.

Cats are terrorists. People think they're their friends, but if they were the same size, we'd be lunch. Dogs, however, well, if they were the same size Bentley and Brutus would probably be drinking a beer with me right now.

My cats went nuts Thursday night when we had an injured pigeon on our patio.  He had some blood on his wing.  My daughter & I went outside to feed him.  He just sat there and ate the food.  My cats were meowing and scratching at the window trying to get the bird.

It's just life.

Get over it, DUmmies.  My cat loves to chase the finches and road runners around here too.  They have never caught one, but I wouldn't be upset if they did.  That's just what cats do.  :)

My cat loves me. He's an asshole and doesn't like alot of people but he loves me. Make no mistake though if I were to die alone with him in the house I'd be eaten, same as your dogs would do in the same situation.  :-)

We had a pair of mourning doves nesting above our outdoor light, our beagle would just sit and watch them.  She never barked or chased them even when they were on the ground in her area.

I doubt that. They have a 50lb bag of dog chow they could easily tip over. They'd dehydrate before that happened and they haven't learned how to drink out of the toilet yet, the slackers.

BTW, a 50lb bag of dog food will last my boys over 6 months. By that time they'll be busting through the damn windows trying to get away from my decaying stench.

Don't worry about cats. Ever see a cat in a Korean or Chinese community? Answer is no, What do you think Chinese short ribs are on the buffet? :whistling:

^ Sick.

My Aunt is Korean, and she makes the best meat dishes ever. "Bagogi," I think it's called. And I know FOR SURE it isn't cat meat.  :lmao:

As absolutely brutally honest, and morbid as that sounds, it's absolutely true. They get hungry, you're there...um, yeah. And my cat loves me above all others. (Though, IL have to wonder sometimes when I set a can of Friskies wet cat food down for her.) She'll be nice to a lot of people, but she'll usually just run, and hide if it's someone she doesn't know well. I've seen her rear up, and hiss at some people. Her instincts are damn good most times, and she's a really smart old kitty. I trust her instincts, and she trusts me. :)

Because of the small feral cat colony we have my garden has been safe from birds and rodents for years. It's the damned bugs I am having a problem with. :censored:

BTW if anyone needs a dynamite barn cat in the VA/NC area let me know. One of the semi tame feral cats needs a job and is as friendly as a dog.

Before we got our cat, she was a neglected kitten living next-door to my sister and brother-in-law at an AFB near Boston MA, where the Navy was sending him to MIT for his master's in construction management.  The kitten, being neglected by its' family, started to bring "gifts" to the back door of my sister's and BIL's quarters every morning.  Small rodents, headless, because Oreo would eat the heads before bringing them "in."  Since she's come ehre, she's an inside cat.  However, from how she reacts when she sees a small rodent (chipmunk, usually) or a bird, she could easily go back to being a ruthless killer.  If we had enough room for her to do this without any possibility of her getting run over by a car, I'd consider it.

Yeah, they're killing the birds which eat the bugs.  :lmao:

Damned if you do, damned if you don't. The rodents generally aren't nearly as much of a problem as the bugs.

Buy you some lizards. I've seen a lizard jump from a stationary position and dispatch a black widow with extreme prejudice.  :rocker2:

Pfft - cats are predatory - it's what they do, and its part of the balance of nature. Even my fatass, spoiled housecat will catch and eat birds, leaving only their wings, feet and beaks behind.

All cats are like this, and other than size and retractable claws, they all behave the same around what they consider to be prey animals. (most jungle-cat's claws are on display all of the time) They stalk, catch and eat them. Deal with it.

Oh yeah -- my cat is waiting to savor my sweet, sweet eye juices. I'm just not done using them yet. And anyone who thinks 'widdle Fluffykins' would do otherwise if she found you dead before a human does are deluding themselves.

I hate birds. They shit on my car... especially right after I wash it. I hate pigeons ever more. Rats with feathers and their shit is toxic to the finish of a car.

There's a large feral cat population in one of the remote area fishing spots I go to every year.

Our record is something like 50 in a night.

150 grains of lead sure slows em down.

I live on a farm. We have a decent sized feral cat population. They are an absolute necessity when the fields are turned over. OK, only if one doesn't want mice in the damn house! We keep the cats fed to the point that they stick around and they catch mice, birds, frogs, etc. to supplement themselves.

Where the hell is Ptarmy? I'd figure this would be his area of expertise....

What's worse? Cats or bunnies?

Cats are good watch dogs, many times have the allerted me to a rodent problem that had to be tracked down.

One year the field mice got under our home and were chewing up the electrical wires, we put our two cats under the house with a turkey cooker full of water and turned them loose for 2 weeks.
We never heard any yowling or scratching to get out from the cats, dead silence except the slight sound of scampering tiny feet stopped.

Hubby went nuts after a week, we need to feed the cats, they are starving, these are house cats that will not eat anyting but dry cat food.

My cats love me, miss me, I know it is just laying there hungry and needing us.  He got really unhappy, comming home and crawling about the skirting calling for the cats.  ------City boy, never had a pet until we met and he was 38 years old at that time.

Wait Dear wait when all rodents are cleaned out the the cats will get hungry and YOW at us.

Sure enough my Main Coon Cats about 2+ weeks began to vocolise and I brought them back into the house both about 5 pounds heaver.   Happy cats, had spent 2 weeks what they were born to do, hunt kill and eat.

We need to save the rat population from cats!  As we all know from the Lybtahrd Doochfase study of 2011 rats are being decimated by evil and terroristic cats roaming freely without GPS collars and deteethandclawifications!!!!!  How can we let this happen!  Rats are beautiful creatures who help clean up after noncaring repukes!  They eat the garbage and then safely recycle it through their digestive systems.  (I love running my fingers through this natural compost and keep a heap of it under my bed!)  The honorable Nancy Pelosio has introduced a bill that will make rats a protected species and ban all ownership of cats unless a person buys a feline guard license for 295.49.  I suggest you support this bill to help save the precious and delightful rat population.  It is so hard for them to breed and raise their adorable babies in the presence of evil killers such as cats!

it is only a matter of time

My cats will go after anything except my baby chicks. And it's a target rich environment. There they are in their little tub in the laundry room, captive, jumping around...the perfect place to play until somebody dies. Yet they never touch them. Not once. Sometimes I'll get up in the morning and find a dead bird (the early one doesn't always get the worm), mouse parts, the occasional mole, but my little chicks & keets, geese & ducklings go on about their life until they're old enough to go out to the brooder pen in the coop.
