Ya know, I think I'm gonna take a pass on this cricket shit, sir.  Heard enough of those little noise polluters to last me a lifetime growing up more or less in the Deep South. :(

Is it that time again?

Maybe cicada bugs can't survive in the desert climates.

And be thankful for that little tidbit, Jess!

We had them in Phoenix...just not in the numbers you see in the videos.

According to the news....we aren't going to get the little devils.

However, 2 adjoining counties are.

Guess there were air traffic control cicadas out there directing the female cicadas to the specifically designated counties for reproduction....

Get you a whole bunch of these little lovelies;

That'll solve the problem quite nicely.  Of course you need to be careful cause they'll sting the shit out of you.

Heh.

I will barely notice them if they hit here. They are only slightly louder , but sound the same as my tinnitus . I "hear" that infernal noise all year long.  :censored:

Swarms and hippies

Even under the best of circumstances, the list of indignities at Bonnaroo, the annual arts and music festival set to take place this year from June 9 to 12 in Manchester, Tenn., can be long. There is, not infrequently, rain, which means mud — nearly 700 acres of it. Temperatures in middle Tennessee in June tend toward the hot and the humid. Many of the estimated 75,000 to 80,000 attendees will camp onsite, a manifestation of the festival’s tie-dyed, second- or third-generation hippie ethos; if the past is any guide, more than a few of them will forgo showers for the duration.

But 2011 may present the festival, headlined this year by Eminem, Arcade Fire, Lil Wayne and others, with its weirdest and most badly behaved guests yet: hundreds of thousands of cicadas, whose loud emergence from the ground every 13 years is a wryly observed fact of life in central Tennessee. Bonnaroo, founded in 2002, missed the species’ last trip aboveground, in 1998. This year, however, may be a different story.

Love the headline. :lmao:

I hate those things.  They leave cracklin' skins all over brick and stucco.  The sound is like a live electric wire buzzing constantly.

One year in North Louisiana, you couldn't hear yourself talk outside it was so loud. LOL, it reminded me of the movie Them.  Spooky sound.

One got in my house.  I screamed the whole time I beat it to death.   :-)

Thundley, have you tried Quietus, that stuff they advertise on TV?  My dad had tinnitus, and it was very annoying for him.

I've tried it and a couple of other things, but not much helps. I've found out that if I concentrate on the noises at night, it actually helps me fall asleep, because I don't think about anything else.

Does yours quiet down with external noise?

Only if the external noise is loud enough to drown it out.  I think I first noticed it over 20 years ago while taking a hearing test for a job.  I was in a sound proof booth with headphones on and heard high pitched tones when there weren't supposed to be any.  Now I hear it all the time except in very noisy situations.

Those are the cicada's that only come out every 13 years right?  not the yearly one's.

I thought they were 17 year cycles.

Same here.  Thank God I sleep with a CPAP machine that generates enough air noise to keep the tinnitus low.

They seem to be disappearing.  Maybe it's the heat.  It went from "warm" to "holy shit, it's hot out here" overnight.

I think they are just saving themselves to ruin your weekend with their sweet melodic siren sounds.

I don't. We have every other darned bug in existence, including those stupid love bugs that invade for a couple weeks twice a year, but so far haven't heard that noise. I hope we don't.

Heard that there is a bad invasion of them in the St Louis area. A friend of mine there said they are so thick in her yard that the greyhounds go out and eat them like snacks to the point where they won't eat their dinner.

She had called me to see how SR is doing and I kept hearing her say, "No Jasmine, No Daisy". The pooches apparently didn't listen.  :-) Crunch, crunch.

I was standing outside work wearing my usual black leather shoes and I thought my feet were going to burst into flame.

It wasn't as bad today.
