Republican Lawmaker Hires Jobless Constituent To Work In His Yard For $8 An Hour

Kathryn Treadway of Goldsboro, N.C., lost her job doing medical transcription work for a hospital early last year. The 35-year-old hasn't had an income since April 16, when an impasse between Republicans in the state legislature and Democratic Gov. Bev Perdue halted her unemployment benefits.

On Friday, she finally found a job -- doing yard work for a statehouse Republican who thought Treadway couldn't find work because she had a bad attitude.

Stephen LaRoque, the Republican who represents Treadway in the lower chamber of the North Carolina General Assembly, said he'd pay her $8 an hour to deal with dirt and debris in his three-and-a-half acre yard in nearby Kinston.

"She said she wanted to do some work, and I got a whole lot of work to be done, and so she’s over here this morning doing some work," LaRoque told HuffPost on Friday. "I got her emptying pots right now. We planted pots that we had plants in, and getting the old plants out, dumping the dirt back into something so we can reuse it."

1. This whole story. . . makes you want to kick the screen. WHAT a ****ing dick.

LaRoque replied that there were plenty of opportunities nearby.

"I'm sorry that you have been unable to find work," he wrote. "Since you live in Wayne County I would like to suggest that you look into job openings in our area. We have a new chicken processing plant in Kinston named Sanderson Farms and they currently have 191 openings available according to the web site link below."

Treadway said she'd already tried that.

"The last thing I need, sir, is another politician acting as if the problem is that I am not applying for jobs," she wrote. "When I applied at Sanderson Farms, they were so inundated with applicants that the (whom I was told to go through) literally wrote my name on a piece of paper with HUNDREDS of other names and disinterestedly told me they would 'call me if anything came open.'"

LaRoque didn't buy it.

"Most anyone can find a job if they can pass a drug test and are physically able to work," he wrote. "I have tried to find people to do yard work but it seems most are too good for manual labor. Based on the tone of your email it is not difficult to see why you can’t find a job."

"For your information sir, I can pass a drug test and am not opposed to manual labor," Treadway replied. "If your yard happens to be within 20 miles of Goldsboro, by all means I'll be over there with a rake and shovel first thing tomorrow morning."

"If you really meant that you would be willing to work in my yard, then plan to come tomorrow morning," LaRoque wrote. "I'll pay $8 per hour. Let me know if you are serious."

You know what DUmmies, that woman did something none of you cartoon characters would ever do, she's doing manual labor.
Granted it's only 8/hr right now. She may do a bang up job and impress the guy then end up making more money. She will now be able to claim that she is employed currently, giving her a bit of an advantage to other employers looking for people. He may even recommend her to some other employer looking for good people. In other words he may have handed her an opportunity. This is why you goons will always be poor and miserable. You never want to start at the bottom and try to work up, you demand starting off right out of high school as a CEO.

:puke: "I got her emptying pots right now..."

Well; isn't he special? On second thought, he's not. Just a typical repuke.

The nerve of repukes wanting people to actually work for being paid.

I'm convinced no liberal would ever do the job I do. They would quit after the first day when they realize that in order to get that modest paycheck the boss expects you to actually do something.

$8 > $0

I'm making 8 bucks an hour during my first 80 hours of training. Better than nothing, DUmbasses.  ::)

Sure it's not an ideal job but when a person is out of work anything that can help pay bills looks good.

I make a nice amount of money now but if for some reason I lost my current job I'd have to take what was available no matter what the wage.

Which just shows that you're not a real liberal, you've just been fooled by the propaganda that liberals are better people...

It's one more job than the Obamulus spending has created.

I have done a ton of things for work that aren't even in related fields, and other than a period of maybe six months, I have held at least a part time job since I was about 13 or so. ( paper route.. when kids used to do them )

Surely you must be forgetting about all those imaginary jobs that he's "saved or created."  :-)

But it didn't last long: Treadway quit after an hour.

"It was just too much. I'm not used to doing manual labor, and the crap he wanted me to do was something two men would do," she said after leaving. "I’m used to making $22 an hour. I'm not gonna sit there for $8 and hour and come home having a stroke."

She just wanted him to extend unemployment benefits... work?   come on, be serious.

But I'm sure she is ok with paying a Mexican to have a stroke in the heat. I swear to God, Americans are lazy assholes. I don't want mexicans to come here illegally but every single time we have ever hired or witness a Mexican work they worked their ass off. We hired a hispanic guy to paint our current house  i know that he was legal but I have no idea if his guys were.  They worked so hard and did a wonderful job, we gave them a bonus and fed them everyday (also gave them drinks) because they had such good work ethic.  I saw them building houses when we first moved into our neighborhood in Dallas, they worked from sun up to sun down, they mow our yards in 100 degree heat at high noon, they stand outside of home depot and will actually WORK if you are willing to hire them. They don't sit at an intersection with a sign that says "will work for food" but have no intention of working.

Maybe that's why none of the DUmbasses were helped by the jug-eared Kenyan's "shovel-ready" jobs.
They only do "point-and-click" or "copy-and-paste" work.

In April, Perdue vetoed a bill that would have preserved the benefits because Republicans attached a resolution to cut the budget by 13 percent. The governor said it would have resulted in massive state layoffs. The GOP lawmakers insisted that their resolution would have only taken effect in the absence of a formal budget by the end of July.

Republicans tried again this week with a less severe bill, but Perdue won't budge.

As many as 46,000 North Carolinians have stopped receiving checks so far.

I completely fail to see how LaRoque is to blame for the cut-off of benefits.  If the governor fails to sign the bill that extends them, it's the governor's fault.  I also don't see him stepping forward to offer the "lady" a job.

$8 an hour isn't much, but her husband isn't too good to work for it...and her $8 would have doubled their income.  I would have taken the job, and done my best.

So what if she's "not used to doing manual labor."  Get used to it.  Your body will adjust, you'll be healthier and need less medical care.

Too, I bet if she showed a good effort the guy would have let her work up to longer hours and being more efficient.  Would have been better than quitting.  Disgusting.

I'll bet there's an illegal Mexican that wants to sue her for undercutting his wage scale.

Hell, even Mikey Moore managed to make it one day before he quit his one and only cush union job.

Bad attitude?  Ya better believe it.  She's been out of work for almost 18 months and can only be bothered to get off her ass for ONE HOUR when the sugar teat got cut off.

And people wonder about the entitlement mentality being a bad thing.

The difference in people is amazing. I had a friend who got let go last year after a long time with a company. He was making 20-something an hour, had good insurance and a company truck. Between then and the job he recently started he took a job making just above minimum wage washing semis. He complained about the low paying job also, but instead of complaining about the harder work or the severe cut in pay his complaint was that if the owner of the company had things just a little bit more organized they could get a whole lot more work done.
