I bench-pressed 375 lbs two times! I'm 6'6" tall and 47 years old, my long arms make moving the heavy weights difficult to say the least. Anyways, I've been following the Body for Life (http://bodyforlife.com/library/exercise/weight-training) regime since I retired from the USMC and I enthusiastically recommend it to anyone that wants to lose weight, get in shape or just feel better about themselves.

regime = regimen, my bad

I'm looking into this for both me and Mrs E. We've got to add some weight training to our exercise plan, because cardio only doesn't cut it.
At the same time, this is a very strenuous regimen. Gonna have to tailor it down a little, especially for Mrs. E. Hell, even for me I'm going to have to use very light weights initially.
So I've downloaded the exercise guide and will incorporate the exercises from our home gym into it. Some of the stuff we can do apart from the home gym, but there are some things we can't do as we don't have free weights except for a couple pair of dumbbells.

Weight training is my reward for doing aerobics. It really keeps you young.

I too had to tailor it to fit my schedule and my resources, but still found it to be very beneficial. I usually do my cardio on an elliptical machine at 24 hr fitness but some days I just take the dog for a long walk with some occasional running.
I went through a period after I retired when I was just feeling depressed and guilty (because I wasn't there and my friends were), and I kind of just stopped taking care of myself. When I finally got it together and decided to pull my head out of my butt it was almost like starting from scratch. I started with the heaviest weights I could handle but still do the routine properly, that's the key, doesn't matter if it's heavy just do the reps. I also found it really motivating to keep a daily workout log that includes monitoring your body weight. I lost 16 lbs in 30 days but made huge gains in the amount of weight I was able to move.
Good luck to you and your wife, I hope this is helpful for you guys.

We're Week #2 into this thing and after getting a couple of attachments for our Body Solid home gym, there's not much we can't do other than getting a weight bench, and we may do that a little down the road. The weight training results in soreness for me the next day (not surprising), but like you, I do my cardio on an elliptical (we have one at home). Mrs E does her cardio on our treadmill after the dogs get their workout on it.
On all the exercises, I have to find the initial weight and go from there, so there's a learning curve involved, but I'm gonna stick with it. Yes, we both maintain a daily log and stick to that too.
And I have to say, the time involved in doing the training is not as extensive as I thought it would be. Of course, I don't usually do my reps very slowly at all - just sorta knock 'em out, depending on the additional weight and fewer reps to kick my butt, which it does.
So far, I like this regimen and it can only help us get stronger and more toned. I'm not any kind of weight training freak - never have been, even when active duty - but this will help keep things tuned up and the lean muscle mass burning more calories.
Thanks for pointing this out, JS! h5!

Best of luck guys, it is a difficult program to start with but it really does work! I wish you the best.
