A large multi-vortex tornado hit Joplin Sunday evening and caused heavy damage as the city took a direct hit.

Several media reports said that numerous buildings along Rangeline Road, Highways 37 and 96 were demolished.

Another media report stated that St. John's Hospital was hit directly, along with a Walgreens, Home Depot and several other locations.

Stay safe everyone in that area. Saw on the weather channel that the monster has headed east, worried about family and friends in Missouri.

Those pictures of the hospital and WalMart are terrifying. Prayers for everyone there.

Somewhat unusually, it headed ESE from Joplin and so bruxhed by a bit to the south of me, a thin but intense band of thunderstorms was all that hit here.

Leave it to Fuxnews to play up what's most likely an isolated incident or two. North Mpls is largley a minority community and this fits right in to their agenda.

And if I'd survived a storm like that I might be tempted to "borrow" a jug or 2 of whiskey from a blown out store.

Extremely difficult to absorb this for us who live in the far North East.    We have a few days warning when a hurricane may or may not hit, but this stuff coming at a minutes notice is terrifying,

We have had just a couple of Iconic Bursts that have leaveled trees and taken out homes in the last few years, perhaps 4 people have died from these ,what ever, but we have been graced with even the worse hurricane doing much less then the damage these tornado's in the mid west have done.

The pictures look like the area was hit with an atom bomb.   Same idea, people out of their homes at work, shopping or on the road have no idea what is about to hit them.

Darn, we need people that can build geodesic domes, or homes built semi in ground out there.   We have plenty of these homes in New Hampshire and Maine and they are more energy efficient then the 2 story homes any where else in the country.

I drove through Nebraska years ago and have never forgotten the feeling of being unprotected.

As long as we have this weather pattern in the mid west time to rebuild in a manor that goes with the protective idea, this may no happen again for 10 years, but when it does, best not live in a mobile trailer or in a above ground 2 story home.

Wizard of Oz the family had a storm cellar, not too many of them left in a trailer park.

This stupid piece of shit seems to be blissfully unaware that Joplin is a rather liberal city with a large gay community in otherwise-deep-Red territory.

Joplin tends liberal, but I don't know about a large gay community.

Be that as it may, fatalities are expected to reach or exceed 100 in the Joplin/Carthage area. We didn't have tornadoes here in Shell Knob (east of Joplin), but driving home last night, I got caught up in some estimated 60mph straight line wind about 7:30pm on 39hwy in Shell Knob.

Correct. Sometimes two is large, and 100 is small. I don't know about a gay community in Joplin, but I'm happy there isn't one in Shell Knob. Two would be very large here. BTW, I'm 6'1"...........and straight!

Crane, Nixa, Republic and Nixa are all north of Shell Knob, but on the way to Springfield near or on 60hwy. Glad your kin are all safe, and have no damage. (http://www.fullsizebronco.com/forum/images/smilies/biggthumpup.gif)

Here's an update - 11:35 cdt, Monday

http://www.accuweather.com/blogs/news/story/49984/wild-weather-leaves-trail-of-d.asp

Quote
More Severe Weather Expected Today

The area will have little time to clean up as another round of severe weather is expected again today.

A complex of severe thunderstorms tracked across Joplin and southwestern Missouri this morning producing gusty winds and hail.

Hail, 1 inch in diameter, was reported in the vicinity of Joplin Municipal Airport along with wind gusts to 36 mph.

Additional thunderstorms will develop this afternoon across the southern Plains, potentially affecting the Joplin area again.

Torrential downpours and frequent lightning associated with these thunderstorms will interfere with cleanup efforts. Localized flash flooding is likely as the ground is already saturated due to above-normal rainfall the last two months.

High winds could cause additional damage and may topple cranes which are in the city helping with the cleanup.

I do not live in the Joplin area. Joplin is in the SW corner of the state; I and Mrs E live up in the north-central part.

Yesterday we did have a tornado touch down about 50 or so miles east of us, but there were no reports of damage or injuries.

Yes, we're fine.  We live east of the affected area.  A pretty somber day at work, with many people unable to verify if loved ones were still alive.

Can you even imagine the amount of checking they'll have to do on the people claiming the kids? They'd have to be very careful that no one in effect kidnapped a kid.

The hurricanes here in Florida are bad, but at least you get a warning. I've had 3 trees (total) fall on the last 2 houses I had in the St Louis area. One time a greyhound of mine who never would go down steps took one look out the window, heard those tornado sirens howling, and high tailed it down those steps to the basement. He had always refused to go down before. I guess even the animals know when something really bad might hit.

Some of us got to talking about the horror and someone { male} piped up with a good question.

We Americans have never seen a full out war State Side since the Civil War---------Had this been an enemy attack and not a natural disaster what would have been the difference to the lives of the people in that area.

Can anyone other then our service men that have seen action in the ME  or Europe WW2 comprehend what would come next. ????

According to the male had this been a terrorist bomb, non nuclear, With in 3 hours a band of 200 terrorists could have come in with guns blazing and wiped out most of the survivors.

His major problem is when those terrorists get a clue on our weather and just wait for a time to do their worse.

I have to admit I have thought of what a difference in causality's there would have been had the 9/11
terrorists struck in the freezing cold of the deep winter.

I do not know who this writer is but for the last couple years he has brought up this scenario to some of us, lessons on how Russia and their horrid winters protected them from invasion going back to Napoleon
and the Gemans.   How the German winters slowed us down due to the cold and head high snowbanks.

Looking at Joplin and the devastation caused by nature, to try to imagine even worse to come for survivors of a natural disaster, earth quakes, fires out of controll, hurricanes and floods, and the tornado's, sooner or later the terrorists will take advantage of mother nature to do their worse.

Question here, can anyone give me a good come back to this guy or is he right on the money????

Most states immediately send the National Guard to these areas.  Police, fire and other emergency responders are everywhere.   An earlier post mentioned that they are having so many volunteers show up, they've had to turn away some.  Now, the first time some terrorist group does show up with guns blazing after a natural disaster, they may be successful.  Thereafter, all the above will show up armed and ready, so not so successful ever again.

Of course, scenarios as you've mentioned work far better in countries that remove their citizens' ability to defend themselves.  So far, we've managed to maintain at least some of that ability here.

That fork stucfk in the tree is pretty chilling. I've heard powerful tornados like that can stick a piece of hay/straw in a tree trunk, but have never actually seen it in person, or in an image.

Wow.

I cannot believe that level of destruction in those pictures.

My neighbors were driving home from Oklahoma on Sunday and stopped in Joplin.  When the power went out in their hotel, they got back on the road.  Thankfully they made it out safely.

More Storms on the Horizon for Missouri City Struck by Deadly Tornado ???

Rescue crews in Missouri are racing against time to find survivors of the deadliest tornado in nearly six decades while forecasters predict more violent storms could hit the region.

Saw on Anderson Cooper's live coverage last night....a teenage girl and her aunt....

There is a Joplin family looking for their son, who had just graduated from the high school, and they were on their way home in 2 seaparate cars...the mother and daughter in the front car, and the father and newly graduated son in a Hummer behind them.

They were on cell phones with each other, the mother and daughter had just made it to their garage...the daughter must have been talking to her dad, with the mother driving and the son driving. The daughter heard her dad yell to her brother to "pull over, pull over!!!"...

The father is in the hospital with several broken bones and lacerations....one taking 20 staples to close...I assume the mother was with him at the time of the interview..as she was not at the interview.

The new graduate was sucked out the sunroof of the Humvee. They have determined he was alive when he was found, and was alive at the hospital, and he was alive when he was moved. However, no one knows where he was moved. They are fairly certain he does not have any ID with him, as his wallet was found...I think in the car.

They, too, have started a facebook site...all I remember is that is name is Will. But the family is hoping that since he is 6'4", with brown hair, and bright blue eyes....he will be recognizable, and found. The family is assuming that he has several broken bones and cuts (because the father does) but also that he may have severe head trauma from going out the sunroof....and may not be able to tell anyone who he is....

I cannot fathom the pain this family .... and all the other families who are looking for their mothers, fathers, children, brothers, sisters.....are going through. I saw an article on the internet a bit ago, there are 1500 missing.

We all need to keep sending prayers for all of them...

PUBLIC SEVERE WEATHER OUTLOOK NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK 0419 AM CDT TUE MAY 24 2011

...TORNADO OUTBREAK EXPECTED OVER PARTS OF THE SOUTHERN AND CENTRAL PLAINS AND OZARKS THIS AFTERNOON THROUGH EARLY WEDNESDAY...

THE NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER IN NORMAN OK IS FORECASTING THE DEVELOPMENT OF A FEW STRONG TORNADOES...VERY LARGE HAIL...AND DAMAGING WINDS OVER PARTS OF THE SOUTHERN AND CENTRAL PLAINS AND OZARKS THIS AFTERNOON AND TONIGHT.

THE AREAS MOST LIKELY TO EXPERIENCE THIS ACTIVITY INCLUDE

WESTERN AND NORTHERN ARKANSAS CENTRAL AND EASTERN KANSAS WESTERN AND SOUTHERN MISSOURI CENTRAL AND EASTERN OKLAHOMA NORTH TEXAS

ELSEWHERE...SURROUNDING THE AREA OF GREATEST RISK...SEVERE STORMS ARE ALSO POSSIBLE FROM THE CENTRAL HIGH PLAINS THROUGH THE MID MISSISSIPPI AND OHIO VALLEYS INTO THE MID ATLANTIC AND NEW ENGLAND STATES.

A STRONG JET STREAM DISTURBANCE NOW OVER THE SOUTHWESTERN DESERTS WILL SWEEP EAST ACROSS THE SOUTHERN ROCKIES TODAY...AND ACROSS THE SOUTHERN PLAINS TONIGHT...BEFORE REACHING THE OZARKS EARLY WEDNESDAY.

AS THIS OCCURS...AN ASSOCIATED SURFACE LOW WILL DEEPEN AND MOVE NORTHEAST FROM THE TEXAS PANHANDLE INTO CENTRAL KANSAS.

SCATTERED INTENSE THUNDERSTORMS WILL FORM THIS AFTERNOON AND EVENING IN AN ARC FROM CENTRAL KANSAS SOUTHWARD THROUGH CENTRAL OKLAHOMA INTO NORTH TEXAS AS DAYTIME HEATING FURTHER DESTABILIZES THE REGION AHEAD OF THE DEEPENING LOW.

CONDITIONS WILL BE FAVORABLE FOR THE STORMS TO ASSUME STRONG...SUSTAINED ROTATION...AND TO PRODUCE POSSIBLY VIOLENT TORNADOES AND VERY LARGE HAIL AS THEY MOVE / DEVELOP GENERALLY NORTHEASTWARD INTO EASTERN PORTIONS OF KANSAS AND OKLAHOMA.

THE STORMS LIKELY WILL ORGANIZE INTO AN EXTENSIVE BAND THIS EVENING...EXTENDING THE RISK FOR DAMAGING WIND...LARGE HAIL...AND A FEW TORNADOES EAST AND NORTHEAST INTO PARTS OF ARKANSAS AND MISSOURI BY EARLY WEDNESDAY.

STATE AND LOCAL EMERGENCY MANAGERS ARE MONITORING THIS POTENTIALLY VERY DANGEROUS SITUATION. THOSE IN THE THREATENED AREA ARE URGED TO REVIEW SEVERE WEATHER SAFETY RULES AND TO LISTEN TO RADIO...TELEVISION...AND NOAA WEATHER RADIO FOR POSSIBLE WATCHES...WARNINGS...AND STATEMENTS LATER TODAY.

Tornadic winds will twist trees, opening up the grain of the wood. Flying debris of any sort can get caught in it and trapped when the tree's grain closes up. Looks awesome, but it's urban myth that the wind drives things like that directly into a tree.

Obama will visit Joplin this sunday

I'm getting a little tired of hearing about these douchebags from far and wide descending upon Joplin and looting.

It would be easy to say just shoot the bastards on sight.

Instead I think they should be jailed when caught. Once convicted I think it is only fair in light of the fact that they are preying upon people who have lost everything that they should give up what they've got.

Inventory whatever their assets are the way the I.R.S. does when you owe. List all of their possessions, cars, boats, stocks, bonds, CD's, the whole shebang and auction it off with the proceeds going to benefit the survivors of Joplin.

Then shoot 'em.

It's a quarter after midnight here - stayed up to catch the Cardinals beat the Padres.

Anyway, a lot of slow rolling thunder, so it's on its way here. And the satellite just went out because of the dense cloud cover. There isn't really much looting being reported in Joplin - it's not like Minneapolis.

Uh-oh! It's getting a lot louder outside. The pup just came into the room, and he'll probably get under the desk...........he just did!

We were expecting the worse overnight, but were spared the bullet. Oklahoma got it instead. Although there were fatalities, it wasn't a strike through a major city where it would have caused more damage and inflicted more casualties.

Heard on The Weather Channel, Fox, CNN and CBS that it's supposed to be even worse today. I was doing a lot of channel clicking last night on the first three, and saw CBS this morning...all of them had that whole area covered for severe and "more" severe. First time I have ever seen white used to signify severity ... purple yes, but never white.  :(

I also remember Ruskin Heights. I was just a kid. that night i was staying with grandparents. they didn't have a basement so we stayed all night with the neighbors. what a disaster !!!

May 19, 1957 – The Ruskin Heights Tornado
On May 19, 1957, a F5 tornado roared through the Kansas City suburb of Ruskin Heights.  Over the next two days, 57 tornadoes were reported from Colorado to the Mississippi Valley, killing 59 people, 44 from Ruskin Heights alone.

Had some definite rotation in north-central MO and a few reported tornadoes, but nothing actually touched down AFAIK. Mrs E, who works in Columbia, MO, is "in charge" of her building, so she herded everybody together on the 1st floor and hunkered down.

That line of storms that went through here looked ugly......

Seems to be okay now.

Sickening.

I spoke with someone who lives just outside of Joplin today.  They were renting a car and I had asked them about Joplin.  They were upset and I felt bad for even bringing it up.  They said the town has been destroyed.  They said it doesn't even look like a tornado went through there, the man said it looked like a bomb went off and the woman with him agreed.

These WBC "people" are going to mess with the wrong people real soon here.

Residents of Missouri Town Block Protesters From Picketing Soldier's Funeral

Quote
Members of a small Missouri town banded together Saturday to block a controversial pastor and members of his Westboro Baptist Church from protesting the funeral of a fallen U.S. soldier, Fox4kc.com reports.

Hundreds of residents in Weston, Mo. -- as well as people as far away as California and Australia -- rallied in support of Sgt. First Class C.J. Sadell, who died from injuries suffered during a surprise attack in Afghanistan.

Good to hear from you OH!!!

We're getting hit now with thunderstorm. Supposedly no rotation in the clouds, just strong winds, hail, heavy rain, and cloud to ground lightning. I'm home with just the cats, and they have disappeared...usually there is at least 1 or 2 in here with me. Ever since we had the bad hail, they disappear when the thunder starts. Even Puffer, who is our "barometer cat" and usually is glued to me when it storms(kindred spirits in fear of storms), has started to go straight under the nearest chair or bed she can find with the first bit of thunder.  :badmood: I was up most of the night watching tv and the strong line of storms heading this way...even though it was 80* at 4am, they just petered out over the plateau, and we only got a bit of wind and some sprinkles.

I am terrified of storms....  :bawl:

I was talking with one of my friends who owns a business dealing in trailers.  When he was bringing trailers down today, he was told to stop until further notice.  The construction company told him they were told that Obumbles, or some other higher ups in charge, didn't want any trailers sitting around in front of the hospital.  At the same time they were also told not to board up the windows on what is left of St. John's, until he gets his photo opportunities out of the way on Sunday.

So, if you don't see any trailers sitting around holding equipment, and the hospital windows are still not boarded up on Sunday, you know why.

Mrs E told me when she got home from work that one of the faculty with whom she works has family down in Joplin.

Two of them, an uncle and another female member, had been missing. The female member made it to a shelter somewhere and is okay, but they found the uncle at the obliterated Home Depot under a pile of rubble, dead.

The faculty member is heading down tomorrow.

Don't know if anyone heard about the family in OK.....pregnant mom and 3 small kids - dad was out of town on business - all took shelter in the bathtub. 3 yr old was sucked out of the house, one other died in the tub - I think the 18mo old. Mom and one child are in the hospital, and they have been able to find the heartbeat on the fetus. The 3 yr old was found yesterday. He, too, is with God. Saw the father on tv last night..... :bawl:

One is unimaginable...two would make it almost impossible to go on.

At least one survived and the baby she's carrying - so far - is showing a heart beat. I haven't heard how far along she is. Both she and the surviving child are in the hospital. Everything they had is gone, and the father is making funeral arrangements for two of his children. I do hope they have family - who aren't having to put their own lives back together - with them....

Certainly puts complaining - about anything - into a totally different perspective.
