Title: Random Pictures of NS (Not Dial up Safe!)
Post by: compaqxp on May 22, 2011, 03:02:57 PM
I drive a lot due to my work, not so much in winter but in the summer it's not uncommon for me to put 1000 to 2000 KM on the car a week. Thanks to how much I drive I get to see a lot of things and get to go on a huge variety of roads. While most of these roads are crap I've started stopping and taking random photos of things.

I figured I'd start this topic and just post the photos I've taken. All these are taken with an old 5mp camera.

Today it was finally sunny...after weeks of rain and cloudy skies.

This is what the province I live in looks like so enjoy:)

^^These windmills all produce 30 Megawatts. I couldn't get a shot of them all. They were built very far away from any houses and no one has had any complaints. They've been quite a success.

I have to admit, I googled the phone number in that picture you took from a couple of days back, and was going to ask you what it is like living up in Nova Scotia, but I didn't want you thinking I was stalking you.  :-)

That looks like a very tranquil setting to live in.  What kind of temps do you experience throughout the year?

No big deal, I figured someone would look it up if I didn't bother to edit it out and I'm not to worried.

The temperate varies quite a lot. An average winter day is -15F and an average summer day is 75F. The coldest it can get is about -30F (That's including wind chill) and the hottest it ever gets is about 95F.

But it's different for all of Nova Scotia, those are just the averages where I am.

I will :)

Lobster boats?

I don't know much about fishing but yes I do believe those are lobster boats.

Cool.  It was just a morbid curiosity thing on my part is all, and I was too lazy to sift back through your posts, to see if you ever named the general area you were located.  It looks like you have a fair mix of dirt and paved roads?

I hope you post more pictures, too.  I had my first up close and personal experience with windmills, albeit just in pieces being trucked somewhere, down on I-10 in Florida three or four years ago.  Since then, I've seen them in action in Minnesota and Kansas.  I actually like the way they look.

Thanks for the pics, Compaq.  My wife's mother's side of the family hails from Nova Scotia from around the time of the American Revolution (family name Bentley, like the motor cars).  She appreciated being able to see a piece of her history, even if it is just a small part of a larger place.

BTW, I added another :hi5: to your collection.

And one day I hope to get up that way.  But this year I am stopping at Bar Harbor.  Speaking of ferries, to bad they couldn't keep the Cat running.  I was hoping to go to Yarmouth from Portland then drive the outside to Peggy's Cove then back down through the state of Maine.

Thanks for sharing your pictures Compaq. I've been to various parts of Canada, but never Nova Scotia.I enjoyed seeing the places I've been (Montreal, Ottawa, Toronto, and Victoria). I hope to see NS someday.

It's quite sad the Cat is no more. Yarmouth is suffering because of it with it's largest hotel to shut down if I hear right. It was a great way to get to NS and a good way for people to get to the US. The only issue was how much they charged for it.

I've lived here most of my life and I've never gotten to Peggy's Cove. I always pass the exit when I'm driving but I've never stopped.

Thanks for sharing your pictures Compaq. I've been to various parts of Canada, but never Nova Scotia.I enjoyed seeing the places I've been (Montreal, Ottawa, Toronto, and Victoria). I hope to see NS someday.

I quite liked Ottawa, it's a very nice city. I'm set to go to Toronto sometime this summer.

It looks like you have a fair mix of dirt and paved roads?

There is a very good variety of roads here and I'm on at least one dirt road a day. Some of the dirt roads are actually in better condition then some of the paved roads.

Love how quaint it looks.  Looks like the setting for a Lifetime movie!

A lot of people have described it in similar ways :)

I have to go to one of the local towns tomorrow and I'll get some photos of the buildings when I have time. The oldest one is from 1708 so they're worth posting I think.

We camped at Peggy's Cove back in 1972, the year that had "...the total eclipse of the sun," immortalized in song by Carly Simon. It rained like hell and was cloudy and we couldn't see any of the eclipse.

We didn't go there for the eclipse; it was just coincidental with our vacation trip. We loved Peggy's Cove though and had a great time camping there.

I think so.  The rides I want to make when I have time are;

Nova Scotia

Alaska

A four corners trip (not to the four corners)  A four corners trip takes you to the four corners of the US.

Everyone should see Alaska.  Even if your biggest expense is the plane ticket, it's worth it (go first class... it's a long flight).

Mrs E and I went up to NS for our anniversary in 2007. It took a LOOOONG time to get there -- flew from Cleveland to Detroit to Toronto to Halifax. Rented a car and drove up to the NE corner - might've been Larry's River. Can't remember exactly.

Stayed in a B&B and damn near froze our asses off -- it was late May, the black flies were out, and the weather was not cooperating all that well.....

Most of these photos were taken within the last year so they're older. I found most on my hard drive and there not as good of quality as the new ones I posted. I wasn't going to bother with these ones but...

Were you born and raised there ?  I may have missed that.

BEAUTIFUL area. I love the way it's kept. Something about those pictures remind me of somewhere.  :-)

My husband traced his roots to Nova Scotia. We are Acadians. He more so than I am. Still, we are both of that heritage and share a sister city love for your homeland.

A long time ago while on vacation in Grand Isle Louisiana, we met some people from Nova Scotia.  They only spoke French but understood Cajun French well.  The words were a little different but the thought was still the same.  Nicest people you could ever meet.

They had supper with us.  We laughed half the night.  They had a wonderful sense of humor. That memory has stayed with me all these years.

Again, nice pictures.

A few other pictures to upload. Most of the other stuff was a point a shoot digital camera however all in this post are photos I've taken on film. I'll list the type of film along with the photos. Most of these were scanned at 600DPI.

I also changed like title if possible as this is going to just be where I post most of the pictures I take from now on and not simply the province. (something like "Random Pictures of NS and other pictures I've taken (Not Dial up Safe!)" Would be good)

My black and white photos are all shot with Kodak BW400CN film which is a pain to get just right and as such B&W photos are often not as good as my colour ones.

I'm never happy with my black and white photos but I'll let you be the judge.

That photo was taken where they train Sea Cadets during the summer, so I imagine it washed in with the tide and one of them found it and put it there.

The first picture looks like a road rally stage.  If it were laid out landscape style, I'd ask you for a higher resolution image of it.  It would make a nice wallpaper.

Also, are those call boxes along that stretch of highway?

None of these photos are much good, but I got my first DSLR (like) digital camera today! It was "broken" (I fixed it) and I got it for 10$. It's quite old but for that price I could not pass it up.

It's a Olympus E-10 with 4x optical zoom, a fast f/2.0 lens on the wide end and 4MP from I think 2000. Regardless, it's my first experience with a camera like this.

My Minolta will continue to be my main camera, but this one is very nice for when I just need something for unimportant/random things.

These were some test photos I took. I made them all smaller for the forum like always.

Great pictures, commy! ^5!

Dozens and dozens of those giant windmills have been installed here too. Unfortunately they weren't put out in the middle of nowhere as you pointed out. Here they run roughly in a line north/south and right through the heart of the local Amish area which makes for some very weird landscapes.

"Carl Zeiss Ikon Contina II"  :bow2: :bow2: :bow2:

I'll have to make it a habit to travel with a camera and put up a few scenes from around here too.

I didn't high 5 you for the great pictures (which they all are), I high 5'd you for that awesome avatar of yours. Whatever the hell that thing is, that is ****ed up! I love it.  :-)

No clue, just something left over from when the area I shot it was a military base. Lots of stuff to take photos of so I always test my cameras there.

"Carl Zeiss Ikon Contina II"  :bow2: :bow2: :bow2:

Very difficult camera to take nice pictures with, as it's neither a rangefinder or SLR making focusing very awkward. The camera has quite a bit of family history attached to it.

I've only recently made it a habit to travel with a camera at all times; I've missed some really got things by not having one. Right now I've got a point and shot camera in the car just in case.

And I think it's supposed to be a Llama. At least when I went looking for something new I typed "Llama Avatars" on Google Images :)

Love the pictures!! Especially the black and white winter ones.

Thanks:) I prefer taking black and white photos during the winter, so that's when just about anything I shoot black and white is from.

It's just that there doesn't seem to be any other traffic on the roads--he has the whole road to himself--and so even if the snow were four or five times as bad, he could've gone on.

When one doesn't have to worry about traffic, one can do practically anything.

I didn't pull over because the roads were bad. I've driven in far worse. :p I had pulled over to get something out of the trunk.

You should know by now I aim for front yards...Less damage then going into a ditch.

Roadside ditches are good for quick body disposals.

Well, so much of seeing beautiful pics of the leaves changing....guess I gotta wait for spring.  At any rate, you live in a beautiful place.  I am happy you stick around to show us pics.

About 4 years ago, Mrs E and I spent our anniversary up in Nova Scotia. That is one cold-ass place even in late May, and the damned black flies are a complete PITA.

You know you're pretty far east when you're out of the damned eastern time zone.  :o

Some of you may find this interesting. This image is known as a solargraph and is the result of a 6 month long exposure.

The lines in the sky are the paths the sun made each day and the gaps are from days/times when in was overcast.

This type of image "burns" into a piece of photographic paper and is then scanned, inverted and touched up in photoshop (no developing). This is one of a few I did and I'll post a few more when I get them done.

This was at our now defunct military base and was put up on the summer solstice.

I wish I knew enough about photography to understand what you said up there, but that is really cool.
