If religion went poof overnight and all the sudden no one believed in it,

would the world be a better place? I have to argue no on this. The problem is humans not a specific manifestation of human imagination.

If the DUmmies went poof overnight how would i make fun you every morning?  :whatever:

If she says no to her question why ask it in the first place?

36. I think it would.

Part of the problem, especially with Christians, is that many believe that they can do whatever they want and as long as they repent everything is ok. They never suffer any true consequences in the God they worship.

I remember an older Simpsons episode where they ask Bart what religion he would choose if forced to choose one. He answers I would be a Catholic. Why? Because I can do whatever I want my whole life as long as I apologize for it just before I die.

I  assume that, even though Christianity is not mentioned by name, cali is making a backhanded slam at Christianity. I like how she tried to put herself above it all. All in all it really is a very subtle slam which is unusual for a place like DU and for a poster like cali. It does have a nice touch of condescension. Like she's saying that her and her ilk (like her fellow DUers) are more grounded in fact and reality than those crazy religious people that believe in their imagined religions.

She could be right. DUers may indeed be more grounded in reality. I don't know. Wait a minute…what is that smell?

Bluestar: Probably a Spirit Guide

I have a guide who smells like cigarette smoke. Not very pleasant, but I know when he's trying to tell me something. It won't go away until I go into meditation and ask what the message is.

On the other side of the coin, Divine Mother sometimes comes with a lovely smell of roses--it's especially strong (and lovely) when a friend of mine and I are doing spiritual work together.

I think you have a new guide (or an old one who is giving you new signals) who is trying to get your attention in some way. I know from reading your posts you are very intuitive. I would just go in and ask. It could be very interesting.

FlippyDoo: A spirit guide? Surely you are mistaken. Why would I, a fictional spirit-guide, be smelling a spirit guide?

Floogeldy: You might be astral projecting, You don't know how to use your astral body, yet. Stop trying to walk with your legs, rather, "think" walking and walk with your spirit's will. linky-dink (http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=105&topic_id=5709632&mesg_id=5709649)

FlippyDoo: Astral projecting? Projecting where?

Popol Vuh: Visiting the Astral Plane can change your whole view of life. You can travel and have a bit of experience here and there but it's a huge waste to treat it superficially or like a hobby. It's far better to have the aim to do something fundamentally worthwhile, which is to discover what is really going on in this life and to receive spiritual knowledge and to walk the path to enlightenment.

With this in mind, in the Astral you can meet and receive teachings from spiritual beings - those who have founded or have been mentioned in the world's great religions, in mythology or in esotericism. You can discover secret knowledge, learn about yourself and see where your spiritual obstacles and your inner defects are. You can monitor your spiritual progress and can walk along the spiritual path knowing each step that you have made, learn hidden wisdom about death, the process of awakening, get premonitions of the future, receive guidance, discover the purpose of life, discover what happens after death and much more.

Just by being in the Astral you can get access to incredible knowledge that is denied the majority of people in the world who do not go there 'consciously'. The Astral is the first of two planes of the fifth dimension; it is a complete dimension of life, waiting to be explored. It is the place where dreams occur, where mystical teachings are given and where the deceased go. It is possible to go there consciously, leaving the physical body behind in the three dimensional world. It is something real. It is not a figment of the imagination, but another place that exists, and with proper techniques and practice, you can prove it.

FlippyDoo; I'm pretty sure that I have not done any projecting, but it doesn't matter. I just know that I really don't want another spirit guide around here. This is my gig, and I kind of like it. So what do I do?

FlippyDoo: Okay. I'll give this a try. I'm sure glad you DU folks who are grounded in fact and reality instead of imagine were around to help me out. If I would have talked to one of those "imaginative" religious people they would have probably just prayed for me or something.

If socialist government went poof overnight and all the sudden no one believed in it, would the world be a better place?

I have to argue yes on this. The problem is leeches and moochers not a specific manifestation of productive human imagination.

You DUmmies do realize that if religion went, "poof!" then the wonderful peaceful Muslims that you are so in love with, would disappear too.

Oh, why am I surprised? They think "The Daily Show" is a news program.

Over at our old home Ralph Wiggim did a whole list of these DUmmies as proof of the "reality-based community. One of the funniest things I ever read. Think I laughed until tears were rolling down my cheeks. I think that might be where I first learned about UGP and the whole pineapple episode.

I remember that list, but I wasn't sure who did it. I thought it might have been Sammy the Squidboy. Back then, reading about all of their superpowers is what really sparked my interest in DU. I'm reminded of an old episode of NewsRadio that guest starred James Caan. He was amazed at Matthew (Andy Dick's character). I felt much the same way reading that list. Too bad we don't still have it.

As many cigarettes as I have burned in this house we should be good for a thousand years...no negative energy within a mile.

Most people who don't like religion ignore it and live their lives. DUmmies want religion gone. They would then be able to worship govt without competition. It a truth I've discovered over the years: all hard core socialists and communists loath and hate people of faith. especially Christians and Jews.

Its sad to say, but even if religion went "poof" tomorrow...most of the godless DUmmies would still go to Hell.

You beat me to it!
Leave it to the DUmmies to base what they know about religion off of what they saw on 'The Simpsons.'
I haven't watched a new episode of the show in at least a year, that show jumped the shark years ago. Matt Groening and the other writers for the show fell victim to two fatal flaws for a comedy show's writers:1) Taking themselves and their show too seriously, and 2) Becoming more concerned with making episodes that are intended to shove their political beliefs down viewers' throats as much as possible than with making episodes that are intended to make viewers laugh as much as possible. The new revival episodes/ movies of 'Futurama' suffer from the same problem, hence why I don't make much of an effort to watch it, either. What makes the show especially hypocritical is that, while they LOVE blatantly insulting Christianity and portraying all Christians as stereotypical morons, prudes, and bigots every chance they can get (i.e. Ned Flanders), there was an episode a couple years back that portrayed Homer as being really wrong for judging and stereotyping a Muslim family that moved into the neighborhood. So, to Groening and the other writers of the show, insulting and stereotyping Muslims is wrong, but insulting and stereotyping Christians is a- ok.
