Newest target for tea party rage... 'Overpaid' lifeguards
The swell of anger from beachgoers and budget-watchers alike has blindsided the lifeguards, who have for years enjoyed the prestige of their jobs in an ocean-centric town that banks on summer tourism. Now, as the pressure mounts, they are balking at their portrayal as suntanned slackers lounging in beach towers as the surf rolls in.
Those whose salaries are in question point out that they hold management roles, have decades of service and are considered public safety employees under the fire department, the same as fire captains and battalion chiefs. The fulltime guards train more than 200 seasonal lifeguards who make between $16 and $22 an hour, run a junior lifeguard program that brings in $1 million a year and oversee safety on nearly seven miles of sand.

at the position of readiness to save life that could take your own. appears all peachy and nice, but it isnt as easy as it looks. and hopefully, you never have to go in. but yea if you are there when needed.
i was pool. much easier
growing up in calif i never envied the ocean lifeguard. i think that would be so hard

The DUmmies can justify it all they want to their own little echo chamber. To the rest of the country, it looks outrageous. My brother and sister were lifeguards in high school, being on the swim team and such. The kiddoes were in perfectly good hands. Minimum wage.
Incidentally, the lifeguards on Lake Ontario are the worst bunch of nazis you've ever seen. The permissible swim area is the size of a postage stamp, and you'd better just stand there up to your calves and be happy about it. A list of rules as long as the tax code. They were even haranging a fat girl, because she wanted to go in the water in full coverage. "No. Swimsuits only. Otherwise, if we try to save you, your clothes are too heavy." She left in tears.

The vast, vast majority of the tens of millions of Americans who enjoy the beach every summer have never seen a lifeguard.
The risk isn't zero, but it's as close to zero as you get in the real world.
Beaches in blue state hellholes that are used by swarms of democrats may need police, but even there lifeguards are a waste of money.
We have rented an oceanfront house on a beautiful beach for a week or two every summer for the last twenty-five years or so.
We've never heard of either a lifeguard or a democrat being within a hundred miles, and so far we've survived quite well.
I think if I went to a beach on Lake Ontario, calf-deep would be all I could take before hypothermia set in.

Never thought of it before. They're hardly anywhere in Florida, GA, or SC, though some hotels hire them on their beaches. I wonder why they're "more prevalent in the liberal areas up north and out west"? :fuelfire:

Still doesn't justify over $200K a year and $400 allowances for suntan lotion. And the $100K/year is for the LOWEST paid full-timer.

It's Westcott's Beach where the nazi lifeguards hang out, and I'll turn a garden hose on myself before I go back there. Save my $8 entrance fee, too. Also at this location, they just removed all the grills from the BBQ stands dotting the picnic area. Some kid apparently burned himself, and this is their solution. :mental: :???:

BTW, I'm trolling the DUmp for gems, but all they're talking about is the rapture. Fully half the threads are about that. WTF is wrong with them? Who believes this, 10 people? They say they're doing it for the "humor," but how many jokes can be made and repeated?

My 1st ex wife dragged me to the movies in 75 or so to see "Lifeguard" with Sam Elliott. :puke: I think she just wanted to see him without a shirt on. I found the hole premise of being a lifeguard as a career silly.
