(too short to excerpt)
A Michigan man who won $2 million from a state lottery is reportedly still eligible to receive food stamps.
Leroy Fick of Bay County, Mich., said in an interview with WNEM-TV that he still uses his bridge card at stores despite winning a jackpot on "Make Me Rich!" last June.
"I even called them and asked about the bridge card and (the Department of Human Services) said you can go ahead and keep it if you want to," Fick reportedly told the station.
Fick claims he paid more than half of his winnings in taxes -- leaving him about $850,000 -- according to the station.
State Department of Human Services spokeswoman Gisgie Gendreau told MyFoxDetroit.com that under federal guidelines, lottery winnings are not counted as income if a person receives a lump-sum payment.
Nearly 1.9 million Michigan residents are enrolled in the food assistance program. More than 805,000 are children, according to the Detroit Free Press.
In 2009, the Office of Inspector General investigated more than 2,600 food assistance complaints, finding more than $5 million in fraud.

Edit: Bolded emphasis mine.
Anyone here see a problem with this? Guy on welfare/food stamps can afford lottery tickets? And when they win, can STAY on the dole?
One step closer to, "going Galt."

Just wow. I'd love for someone with a mole to post this at the DUmp.
-
Several years ago in Illinois, if I remember correctly, a man won a huge lottery while on welfare. The state sued to be repaid and lost.
Sad.

The guy paid A MILLION DOLLARS IN TAXES - if he wants to keep the card who the frik cares - it'll take him 1,254 years to use up the credit he paid into the system.
And I'm thinking if they count it as income they'd have to tax it as income which I'm also thinking would mean they would collect less in taxes.

Okay, RC--I'll play. WTF is this assclown doing playing the Lottery ON OUR DIME???
-
The DUmmies don't have a problem with it, but some that do think he's a Tea Party person. Yeah right, he's an old liberal hippy.

Sure - somewhat moderated by the fact he got screwed out of half of it by taxes, though. I guess in his case it kind of all evens out.

How silly of me, playa hatin like that. I mean, I got 850 large in change in my couch cushions.
And if he paid 60 percent in taxes, then he's even stupider and douchier than he looks.

Makes him an ideal taxpayer for Michigan, dunnit?

You really want to have a conversation about what poor people on welfare can or can not spend their money on? If he bought $20.00 worth of crack would you hear about it? Would you care? He bought a damn lottery ticket and won $2,000,000 minus $1,150,000, not a bad deal over all for Michigan - but maybe next time he'll just buy the crack and make you happy.

What an idiot! :mental:

Here's a better idea...how about he GETS OFF THE ****ING DOLE???
-
I have less of a problem with Michigan's food stamp regulations making it possible for him to keep the benefits, than I do with him using them. Regulations are sometimes goofy.
Just because one qualifies for aid doesn't mean they have to use it.
-
They should at least take him off foodstamps for a few weeks... that's probably about how long it'll take him to blow 850 grand.
Easy come, easy go....that type can't handle money that's usually why they're on some form of puplic assisstance.

Yes.
