LED bulbs hit 100 watts as federal ban looms
NEW YORK – Two leading makers of lighting products are showcasing LED bulbs that are bright enough to replace energy-guzzling 100-watt light bulbs set to disappear from stores in January.
Their demonstrations at the LightFair trade show in Philadelphia this week mean that brighter LED bulbs will likely go on sale next year, but after a government ban takes effect.
The new bulbs will also be expensive — about $50 each — so the development may not prevent consumers from hoarding traditional bulbs.

In my humble opinion this is about as stupid as it gets...and yes, tomorrow I am buying a LOT or real lightbulbs.
-
I've been stocking up for a while now.
-
Everytime one of the stores have incandescents on sale, I try and buy some.

I may just back my truck up the loading dock

This like the electric car, is trying to force a technology that is not ready for prime time. This is the next prohibition.
"To encourage energy efficiency, Congress passed a law in 2007 mandating that bulbs producing 100 watts worth of light meet certain efficiency goals, starting in 2012."
Thank you George Bush and the Democrat Congress.
I have been stock piling for a about 2 years now. But even more so since we took back the House and John Boehner took it upon himself to appoint one of the authors of this horrible Bill ((R)Fred Upton) to chair the energy commission.
I had originally hoped we would repeal this ridiculous over reach by the feds after we took back the House, but little did I know the GOP 'leadership' would be a bunch of spineless sissys. I would have prayed for some balls up there too if I had known. Is just one pair too much to ask for?
Apparently ... :banghead:

Let's not forget a side effect of this bill. GE closed an incandescent plant in the US, and are making their CFLs overseas.

I was reading on Facebook that these LED light bulbs can cause retinal damage. So, we go blind, while saving energy..... :argh:
Dangers of Energy Saving Light Bulbs
Fluorescent and light emitting diode bulbs are popular alternatives to incandescent light bulbs. They use less energy to create light, and they last much longer before burning out. But they can pose some dangers to human health when you operate them or dispose of them improperly.
White LED Light Bulbs
The International Commission on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection does not find a significant general risk in using white LED bulbs in lamps. In LED bulbs with a wide field of light or high level of luminance, there is potential for permanent retina damage if directed at the eye. MDSupport.org lists looking directly into an LED as the primary behavior responsible for retina damage from LED bulbs, and advises against doing so whenever possible. In cases where looking at an LED light is unavoidable, the international commission recommends a maximum exposure of 100 seconds.

Damn, that's scary.
Retinal damage is no joke. Take that from someone who's blind in one eye because of it.
-
This law can still be repealed. It needs to be repealed.
But the GOP 'leadership' which controls the House and the House Energy and Commerce Committees sees it differently.

Upton flips a switch on CFL bulbs (http://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2010/dec/6/upton-flips-a-switch-on-cfl-bulbs/)
Three years after he led the charge to require consumers to ditch their comfortable old incandescent lights in favor of those twisty CFL bulbs, Rep. Fred Upton now wants to be the man to help undo that law as the next chairman of the House Energy and Commerce Committee.
That about-face is not unique among lawmakers looking to atone for stances they've taken over the past decade as they seek to gain top posts in a decidedly more conservative Republican Congress, but his reversal underscores how intent the GOP is on proving it has broken with past practices.
"We have heard the grass roots loud and clear, and will have a hearing early next Congress," said Mr. Upton, a Michigan Republican who is facing several others in his party in a bid to earn the gavel of the powerful committee. >>>
Indeed, the compact fluorescent lamp, or CFL, has become a symbol of government overreach for many consumers, who wonder what was wrong with the incandescent bulbs that have lighted their kitchens, family rooms and bedrooms for more than a century. >>> in the intervening years, CFLs have joined low-flow toilets in drawing the scorn of consumers, and some argue that the bulbs' mercury content poses a safety and environmental hazard. >>>
"It's emblematic of everything that's wrong in the relationship between Washington and the voters. There was no conversation; there was no back-and-forth. The voters woke up one morning, and they said you can't buy incandescent light bulbs," said Michael McKenna, a Republican strategist and energy lobbyist who has followed the issue.
Mr. Upton and other lawmakers - including the other three men seeking the chairmanship of the Energy and Commerce Committee - now say they've learned their lesson and want to unshackle consumers and restore their choice in light bulbs.
---------------------------------------
Is talk cheap or what Mr Upton? They - and by that I mean Republicans too - think the general population is so ignorant. Michelle Bauchman introduced a bill a year or so ago to repeal this and was shot down.
The horse is out of the barn and treating liberty as sacrosanct isn't something one just stumbles upon Mr Upton/ Boehner.

its long known that CFL's contain toxic merc. I won't allow them in the house even if it is a small amount. your susposed to take them someplace for recycling.
I haven't heard of LED's causing Retinal damage. interesting

The Dangers of CFLs Even Greater Than Previously Known (http://www.americanthinker.com/2011/05/the_dangers_of_cfls_even_great.html)
New evidence of CFLs causing fires -- even exploding -- as well as new environmental concerns have come to light since my article The CFL Fraud published. Here are some of the additional fires:
"I had one of these CFL's in my garage socket, and it blew a component (not the glass corkscrew) and caught fire. Fortunately, I was standing four feet away at the time. I turned off the power and smothered the bulb with a towel." LINK
"I heard a sizzling sound like bacon, looked in the direction of the sound and watch the CFL burst into flame with flames licking up onto the ceiling of my house." LINK
"I've had two burn through their base, leaving a hole large enough to stick my little finger in, and scorching the fixture. They are a fire hazard." LINK
"I've had TWO catch fire. I don't trust them. Plus they look silly." LINK
"I've had two CFLs explode on me. One in our bedroom overhead light.... I took a long time cleaning the bedspread and carpeting, because of fears of the mercury residue. Had another one explode in the family room." LINK
>>>
Rick Delair of the Edison Tech Center writes:
"CFL bulbs contain many nasty toxic substances. You likely know of the mercury they contain already, but they also have things like lead (stabilizer in the plastic ballast housings), arsenic in the electronic parts, phenol in circuit boards, cyanide to process metals for parts, toxic phosphors, and the list goes on and on! They can't be tossed in the trash can >>>
Statists believe government can determine people's economic interactions better than the people themselves. In short, they believe government economic planning is superior to the free market. Politicians are always looking for ways to demonstrate this to justify the statist ideological conviction and retain the political power to force it on the public. From low-flow toilets to ethanol subsidies and mandates, to creating the housing bubble that collapsed (taking the rest of the economy with it), and everything in between, they have a consistent record of failure. Now it's CFLs. People are being forced to switch from a reliable, economical, environmentally safe product to one which is none of these -- and a health and safety hazard to boot. >>>
The Big Government advocates are as ignorant of history as they are of economics. How did Edison's carbon-filament bulb lead to the worldwide popularity of incandescent lights for well over a century? Was it because government shoveled subsidies of taxpayer money to Edison to develop it and make it economic? Or because government passed laws requiring people to buy those bulbs? No, Edison developed the bulb on his own, and it had to prove itself to consumers.
--------------------------------------------
My thanks goes to George Bush. And thanks to the economic genius of Republican Fred Upton for not removing this plague to come upon us when you said you would after you were appointed by John Boehner to Chair the House Energy and Commerce Committee.

Telstar Recalls Energy-Saving Light Bulbs Due to Fire Hazard (http://www.arcamax.com/business/businessnews/s-884462)
May 12, 2011
I notice the Snopes article was updated Oct 2010, while the article I posted above is dated May 19, 2011.
While I do have reservations about whether these bulbs do pose a fire hazard or not I have no such reservations about their toxicity and how absolutely impractical they are. Which is really my main thrust about this scam. And I will not give up my demand that this stupid legislation be repealed -- as promised by those who wield the power to do just that. Legislation put forth to solve a non existent problem -- a hoax, called man made global warming. Actually, its a religion. It takes faith to buy into this horse squeeze.
The arrogance of the elites (in both partys) in the most toxic city in the US (Washington DC) never ceases to amaze me.

I totally agree. ive seen enough on CFL's to know i don't want em in my home. but this like all products is susposed to be cleard by UL. which means you have to take any product to them and prove its safe for the public to use or consume. but bad designs can slip by them and the product goes into full production.

How long will $50 worth of candles and kerosene light your home?
Do you really think that the majority of DUmmies will buy $50 light bulbs?

I've already wrote my elected dipshits, uh officials about this. its probably already in the shredders.
BTY I have a kerosene heater. but its just for emergencies

Ah, the CFL ban soon coming to Canada as well. I've got a few incandescent bulbs and plan to get more, I like the light they give off and that they aren't a hazard if broken.
Also people complain about them giving off a lot of heat thus causing most of the efficiency problems with them however, it should be noted that here in the winter the heat they give off is not a bad thing.
I can get incandescent for 0.25$ a bulb from the dollar store and a bit less at a local bulk place.
Personally though I use Halogen lights in my house, I always have. I find them to do a better job at lighting up my rooms and if I'm to be told right they're a bit more efficient the standard light bulbs. They look a lot like this..
They also fit in the light fixtures most CFLs still can't.
