Title: Rahm Emanuel sworn in as Chicago mayor as Daley era ends

Former White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel was sworn in Monday as the mayor of Chicago, succeeding long-time mayor Richard M. Daley.

Emanuel, who resigned at President Barack Obama's top aide to run for mayor, also was a congressman and adviser to former President Bill Clinton. Emanuel will face a formidable task because Chicago's finances, like those of many U.S. cities and states, were devastated by the recession.

Emanuel, 51, known for his hard-driving style and often profane language, won an election in February with more than 50 percent of the vote against five other candidates.

"As your new mayor, it is an honor to fight for the change we need and a privilege to lead the city we love," Emanuel said in his inauguration speech.

Daley, 69, who retired after 22 years in office, was the longest-serving mayor of the nation's third-largest city. He attended the ceremony along with Vice-President Joe Biden and Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn.

There isn't a better sign of the stupidity of the Chicago electorate.

In all honesty, he was the best candidate.  At least the most conservative, for whatever that's worth.

Most Chicago Democrats are far more conservative than you would be led to believe.  It's just that almost no one will run for city-wide office as a Republican because most people are so disciplined to vote Dem only.

I know that Rahm pissed off the DUmmies during the mayoral campaign due to his stances on unions.  Now, will he follow through with those ideas.

In their book, he's a DLC'er and damn near a DINO.  Emanuel is certainly no conservative, but he can't possibly f-up Chicago more than Daley did.

I'm guessing he'll be a one or two term mayor and then run for President in 2016.  Like we need someone else with Chicago ties in the White House.  :whatever:

How many dead votes did he get in the exit polls? The exit polls are the only ones that really matter.

And not surprisingly:

Rev. Jesse Jackson is one of the first people through the door at the open house.

A big sign of corruption.  I don't believe the citizens have much say so in Chicago.

Not a bad outcome for a candy-date who was legally disqualified from the race at one point.
