Oregon's monster mushroom is world's biggest living thing

Sunday, 6 August 2000

The largest living organism ever found has been discovered in an ancient American forest.

The Armillaria ostoyae, popularly known as the honey mushroom, started from a single spore too small to see without a microscope. It has been spreading its black shoestring filaments, called rhizomorphs, through the forest for an estimated 2,400 years, killing trees as it grows. It now covers 2,200 acres (880 hectares) of the Malheur National Forest, in eastern Oregon.

The outline of the giant fungus stretches 3.5 miles (5.6 kilometres) across, and it extends an average of three feet (one metre) into the ground. It covers an area as big as 1,665 football fields.

The discovery came after Catherine Parks, a scientist at the Pacific Northwest Research Station in La Grande, Oregon, in 1998 heard about a big tree die-off from root rot in the forest east of Prairie City.

Lessee - how many pizzas would it take to............  :???:

WOW, now the way to get this on the endangered species list is to have some celebrity chiefs to find a way to cook this stuff so everyone wants some.

Get the Asia comunity involved, pass on a rumor that these spores boost the libero in men or cure gall bladder disease.   Get this stuff in a lab and find out if here is some chemical or what not that can benefit mankind.

God gave humans controll of the earth, its plants and animals, so why are we waiting for, how deep in the ground does it grow,  can its roots be used to make food as the roots of some mushroom's are made into substitute mead products today on the market.????

Product called Quern a meat substitute uses the roots of schrooms to make meatless products that taste like chicken, delicious and nutritious.

There is  Rockne gold mine out there just waiting to be harvested for food ,perhaps pharmaceuticals, we may have a new food source and a world wide need for these fungus.    Damn look at the cost to get those darn fungus black truffles ----what $500 a pound for the good ones ????
