Title: What is it?
Post by: Chris_ on May 13, 2011, 09:00:59 PM
I got an allergic reaction after rubbing against some "newly installed" carpet at work.  Doing the usual stuff, I had to crawl under someone's desk at work to plug in their phone and computer equipment.  Now my hands won't stop itching and they're red and inflamed.

What the hell is it?

Probably contact dermatitis.

New carpet is treated with some sort of chemicals to prevent staining. Carpet glue could also be the problem.

I'm sure you've washed your hands, but have you used that super dooper soap you use when you work on your cars? Have you changed out of the slacks you wore to work? You will have carpet fibers on them...new carpet "sheds" for quite some time...and if you rub your hands on your slacks, you are just getting whatever is making you itch, back on you.

After scrubbing your hands...if you have some hydrocortisone cream, rub it in to your hands real well. Take some benedryl if you have some. If you don't have either...go get some. Get the generic hydorcortisone...strongest strength..it will work almost as well as the brand stuff.

No, I just did what I usually do.  Come home from work and change into shorts and t-shirt.

I'm still itching.  I should probably go wash up.

New Carpet is bad.  Between the glue and the formaldahyde.  Take a benadryl!

I agree, take a couple benadryl.

If I took a couple Benadryl, I'd sleep for a week. That stuff just knocks me out.

BEG, OT a little bit, but a quick question -- does your husband's new truck have a cigarette lighter and ashtray in it as standard equipment?

I was leasing a new car a few years ago.  It did not have either.

I washed up with regular soap and hot water.  My arms and hands feel much better.

I thought it was polyester or something.  I wasn't thinking formaldehyde at the time.
