2. That have anything to do with their 30+ year old "tax rebellion"? nt
Yeah, paying less in taxes makes people poorer. :mental:

3. Absolutely. Yet, you'll still get Californians on DU who deny it.
People still defend Prop 13, which was a total disaster for Cali's budget. The effects we see now are cumulative; they didn't happen overnight.

6. Housing in California is still impossibly expensive.
Older people who bought homes many years ago can stay in those homes only because Prop. 13 assures that their property taxes will not rise to reflect the supposed current sale value of their homes.
If the population of California has aged, then it is even less likely that people will vote to do away with Prop. 13.
My husband and I are retired. We would have no choice but to move to another state if we had to pay higher property taxes.
A lot of older Californians are in our position. So, if they raise the property taxes, then many older Californians will lose their homes or try to sell them. Housing prices may decrease somewhat, but at what cost?
So, it's very easy to blame Prop. 13 and to complain about the fact that California has so many older people. But, this is our home. Where are we to go? You are talking about forcing millions of people in their 70s-100s to pack and move. Not so easy.

17. if you think i care that you might be priced out of housing in an expensive neighborhood -- i don't.
Edited on Thu May-12-11 03:45 PM by Hannah Bell
in case you don't get it yet, that's how the housing market & the entire economy *works*, that's what capitalism is about, that's entirely normal.
if you can't afford to live in san francisco, you're supposed to make other arrangements. just like if a person with less income than you is supposed to make other arrangements when they can't even afford a house.
just don't go around whining that "california" as a whole, or "the bay area," is too expensive to live in, or that it takes $250K a year just to scrape by in those places.
plenty of poor people live in the bay area. they just don't live in the style some people here at DU apparently think is "normal" & their birthright.
i don't have enough money to buy property in most expensive neighborhoods in seattle. i don't expect sympathy for being in that position. i don't paint myself as a hard-luck case & scream about how i can barely get by on $150k a year.
It sounds like DUmmie Hannah Bell believes that if you don't make enough money to support the leeches then you should be forced by the tax burden to move somewhere else.

Says the dumb bitch with Karl F'n Marx as her avatar.
She's being snide.
Her implication is that unless you agree to tax subsidies to allow everyone to have a $400k house then you have no right to complain when tax rates--which she puts on an intellectual level equal to free markets--force you from your house.
But yeah: she is a dumb bitch.

I may complain about high housing prices, but my complaint is really more about the fact that the banks were so lazy about loan paperwork, and straight out dishonest about it, that people were able to buy houses that they just plain couldn't afford. And now that those houses are back with the banks through foreclosure they are only letting a small number out at a time to keep housing prices high.
California's housing prices are ridiculously high. $200,000 for a house in a not so great neighborhood, and in such poor repair that the bank will only take a cash only offer? :censored:
For now, my plan is to keep working at my job with a decent salary and and keep socking my money away. At some point I fully intend to leave the state, and I will have enough saved up to get a nice house in any other state but this one :cheersmate:

Waiting for the DUmmies to suggest an "Exit Tax" for those old people leaving the state.

Report from behind communist lines.
Ten years ago (2001) I had over 40 customers in the beginning of the Bush Prosperity.
Five years ago (2006) I had 17 customers in the midst of the Bush Prosperity.
Three years ago (2008) I had 7 customers at the beginning of the end of the Bush Prosperity.
Two years ago (2009) I had 2 customers at the beginning of the Obama rainbow economy.
One and one half years ago 2010 I had 1 customer that was not buying any automation equipment and closed shop in "Recovery Summer."
Many of those customers are still in business but no longer in Kalifornia nor the USA and have local sources for automation. Some have also gone out of business. A smaller amount have been bought and have their own sources.
What this shows is that small business has run out of Kalifornia. This happened under various political control of WDC. However, what is consistent is the democrat control of the state houses. Sadly for the USA, the same politics of Kalifornia, Mickgan, Illinois, etc that have killed a vibrant and creative economies into the 'Truly Boned" are now prevalent in WDC to BONE the rest of the country.
Sir Winston Churchill:
"Socialism is a philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance, and the gospel of envy, its inherent virtue is the equal sharing of misery."
Always has, always will.

People still defend Prop 13, which was a total disaster for Cali's budget.
Prop 13 was a Godsend for anyone who owns property in California.
It is only a disaster to the politicians whose wild spending plans are thwarted by limiting how much they can increase our property tax annually.

California business and the people of California are being crushed by leftist regulation and leftist taxation, yet the state votes overwhelmingly for democrats. That makes poor, stupid Beth's plight really satisfying. I hope when she's thrown out of the camper she has to live under a cactus and eat scorpion tails.
But a lot of decent people are suffering out there in that madhouse because of the huge population in just a couple of blue hellholes.
-

And the fact that it's based on what the previous property appraised for during the last sale is where the state REALLY makes out.
Imagine paying $4500/yr in property taxes for a crackerbox which shouldn't cost more than $175-200K in virtually any flyover state. Now turn around and sell it. The taxes that buyer now pays is upwards of $7000-8000/year.
The only people "making out" on property taxes in CA are those folks who have held on to property for 30 years or more--IOW, virtually nobody.
That's what happened when I sold my place in CA. Poor dumb bastard had no idea what he was getting into--and he also got hit with a supplemental bill for 2007.

Previous owner paid around $5k in property taxes and lived in the house for 18 years. Would have been less had they not added on. They made a ton of improvements, added on a second floor doubling the sq ft of the house. When we bought the house it appraised for more than double what it was on their taxes, so our taxes are over $10k.
He has Lou Gehrig's and it got to the point he couldn't work. They had planned on this being their forever home but could no longer afford it. He would have had to move a lot quicker had the property taxes rose as quickly as property values here in CA. A few years ago he had it for sale for 1.2M, today we have it for sale for $875k. The tax rate is relatively cheap % wise but the cost of housing makes that property tax excessive. Texas property tax is higher % wise but housing is at least 1/3 of the price. Also, no state taxes. We paid $35k in state taxes for 2010 plus the sales tax here is high. I won't even get into their tiered electricity rates and the cost of renewing you car tag every year. CA is backassword.
-
Oh, I'm well aware of the electric rates. And the "baseline" they use. Shit must have been set in about 1940. IIRC, our baseline summer rating was about 300KwH for a month.
Try running a house in 100 degree weather on that.
Don't even get me started on trying to get a contractor's license in CA. One for the state, one for each county you want to work in, and sometimes down to the city. Absolutely insane.
-
Remember that Beth had a run-in with some regulatory agency or other, concerning their property. She was getting the severe runaround, with mountains of redtape and hassle. It was sweet. It never occurred to her of course, that this is what happens with democrats.
-
For those good and decent people looking to flee California the fine Commonwealth of Virginia could use a few more of you.

Check out Maine, Mother called me to ask if I had seen an article in the paper that some---idiot posted saying it was the old folks that was placing hard times on the youth.
No Shit, the elderly that paid sky high taxes were not paying enough to support the poor folks that refused to work or care for their children that had problems due to the parents taking drugs before, after and during pregnancy. Parents that went to jail were worried about how their family could get along with only wellfare while they were in the lock up.
It is the senior citizens that do not pay enough taxes that are destroying poor family's.
Complaint no. 1---In 1941 the state of Maine gave a big tax break to the family's that served in that war. About $50.00 a year, now as time has gone on the tax break for anyone surviving and living on the original land is around $3,000 a year.----taxes on the property are now about $9000- a year . Gosh how does a widow at 85 who lives on # SS and a small pension pay for $6.000 a year--------Perhaps this is savings, living with no extras.
No vacations for her/him, no new car, no cable TV.
It is all the fault of the seniors that will not just die and allow the blood heirs to take over wealth, their sacrifices that mean nothing to them.
What a mess, these youth that buy homes they cannot afford and loose them are now bitching about the 90 year old woman/ man who lives next door, sacrificed to sent her/his kids to school, lost family members in a long ago war is still getting tax breaks that was due to her/him due to service to our country.
Another thought, the kids today do not have the GI Bill, our parents and grandparents came home after serving out country to a guaranteed education. No cost to them, they had paid it for their time blood sweat and tears.
One has to look back to family that started up their own businesses due to the GI Bill, so the kids grew up with parents that had had to face Hell to come home and did not want their own kids or grandkids to ever see what they had seen to them.
This thinking led to 2 generations of spoiled children who were protected from the reality of life.----------------3 RD. generation comes along and now wants all the goodies their ancestors worked for, with no work on their own.
They have raided grandmothers for their bank accounts, and then come in and put Grandma in a nursing home, take over their property and yell bloody murder when the tax exemption will not go to them.
Who can say if this is the fault of the government or the people who love unwisely.
Scam going about in Sparkys neck of the woods, elderly are cold called and told their grand child is in Jail and needs money to bail them out. Enter a hysterical call and a so called police officer telling the victim of all the nasty things that can happen to them, the grandparents react, and only after sending money orders realise that the so called grandchild did not call them by family name, as in Me'me' or even give their name .
I will leave all my goods to the SPCA --- worked my whole life and I will be dammed if some great-grand child will get one penny of it.

Is this DUmbass somehow laboring under the idea that Gov. Moonbeam and the State Houses are Republican controlled? :???:
Also, for those of you lurkers that may be confused about what is happening to the once great state of California, I have your answer:
The way to crush the bourgeoisie is to grind them between the millstones of taxation and inflation.
Vladimir Lenin
The liberal hordes you have consistently elected to the Governorship and Sate House have used this well against you and you are just starting to really suffer from it. Enjoy...

Check out Maine,
A state with even HIGHER state/local tax burden. Yay!
Oh, and the scam ain't just here, genius. It's a variant of a scam that's been going around for YEARS.
Thank you for once again demonstrating my theory is based on FACT.

Facts elude Vesta.
-
Vesta you must have a really shitty family because no one in my family would ever throw my Nana in a nursing home. However, sometimes there isn't a whole lot of choice. I have a great aunt who has Alzheimers and she's in a facility that deals specifically with memory care. I didn't raise my children to be pampered and selfish and that's really the key. Children turn out the way they do because of how they're raised.
