Title: Boy dies, friends 'disgusted' by slow response

EVERETT, Wash. - Witnesses say 13-year-old Austin Anglin was trapped underneath his family's boat for about 40 agonizing minutes before Coast Guard crews pulled him out of the water. For at least some of that time boats from several agencies could do little more than sit and watch, frustrating his helpless loved ones.
"I looked over at the game warden's boat and there were four people standing there in life jackets on the edge of the boat as I was telling them there's a boy under the boat," said Tony Edwards. "They did absolutely nothing."

The two other agencies on the water, Tulalip Fire and Washington Fish & Wildlife did not have divers on board their boats.
The Everett Police Department's Marine Unit -  including two divers – was on the scene, but they didn't go into the water because they did not have dive gear, nor rescue training.

Everett Police refused an on-camera interview but told us their marine unit is not a search and rescue team. It's a search and recovery unit.  Also, on Saturday the team was working an "enforcement detail," meaning they were out to write tickets as boating season kicked off around Puget Sound.

Sounds like a union operation.

Sounds like a union operation.

Exactly what I was thinking..."that's not my job".

We're living in a f'ed up society when the first thought that pops through these idiots head ISN'T, "Be right there!", followed by a splash.

I am more surprised some citizen didn't jump in.  I would personally crotch stomp every mofo that stood there if I were this boy's parents!

The article made it sound like they were just watching .  However, if authorities were on scene, they likely thought they were going to do something. I've read stories before of first responders preventing friends or family from assisting in cases of fire, but not something like this.

Sounds like some people need to lose their jobs over this. But that won't happen.

I hope there is more to the story than what is reported.  Horrible!

You are correct, has to be much more to the story, why were the officials told this was a recovery and not a rescue mission.???

The wrong part of the country I would guess, no one is encouraged to think on their own or question orders.

Sad, had this happend in my neck of the woods ----people in row boats, pod boats and even kids on innertubes would have been out there.

Every man and woman out lobstering would have forgotten about money lost and been steaming bat out of leather to the site.

Boat sunk kid under it is a nightmare for my coast.  Even if the Coast Guard tried to prevent people trying to help, what the **** are they going to shoot us if we keep steaming in ???

One does not have to be a diver to get under the boat, people can hold their breath for 1-2 minutes and get down to see what is happening. there are always some air pockets that will last an hour or more.  If the child is found dead, at least the seafaring comunity tried.

This story has given me a nose bleed, high blood pressure and anger to what I am not accustomed to.

If it comes to this in America then I shall pick up an ore and start walking west. When I come to some place where someone asks me what I am caring, then I will settle down.

They could have been liberals. Never do for yourself what the Government is supposed to do.

I know. I'm cynical.
