Highway of Death
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Highway_of_Death
This is why "they hate us" (amongst many other reasons).
And yes, I blame the pilots who carried out the orders as much as the leaders who gave them. All or them are war criminals and deserve the death penalty.

4. You are so wrong.
Those people were flying white flags. They were a defeated people, Whole families, tired of the fighting, just trying to go home. That highways of death was first degree murder. Another War Crime by the United States, that still needs to be dealt with.
Tell me again who the real terrorists are? How is this working for peace when you slaughter innocent women and children who are in retreat and call it war?

WTF?

Copied from the wack-ur-peter article.
Iraqi military personnel were attacked on Highway 80 by American aircraft and ground forces on the night of February 26–27, 1991, resulting in the destruction of hundreds of vehicles and the deaths of many of their occupants. The scenes of devastation on the road are some of the most recognizable images of the war, and were publicly cited as a factor in President George H. W. Bush's decision to declare a cessation of hostilities on the next day.[1] Many Iraqi forces however succeeded in escaping across the Euphrates river and the U.S. Defense Intelligence Agency estimated that upwards of 70,000 to 80,000 troops from defeated divisions in Kuwait may have fled into the city of Basra.[
How are you supposed to see a white flag at night from a high speed jet?
The South Carolina Air National Guard did a good job of shooting the fish in the barrel, huh.

Shit like that is why we pay the military. Break things and kill people.

That's what they train for.

Maybe the Iraqis should have been somewhere else? :???:

My cousin was over there with the SC National Guard when that was going on. He said the pilots all wanted a "Hot Turn Around". Refuel, reload and get back up there as fast as possible. They wanted to break things and kill all the people they could..... :-)

They could have stayed put and surrendered, by pulling out they were maintaining their viability in the Iraqi order of battle, and thus they were totally-legitimate targets under the Law of Land Warfare. It's illegal to kill people who are surrendering, NOT to kill those who are retreating or resisting. The subsequent Shi'a/Kurdish revolt failed in large part because we stopped before we had killed enough of the Republican Guard.

The "Highway of Death" was a great operation, and made for terrific TV, but I think it's been vastly overhyped as far as lethality is concerned. Even as stupid as muzzie arabs are, they would not have sat still in their trucks waiting their turn for a missile. It looks like dozens, maybe hundreds of vehicles were destroyed very efficiently, but you know the vast majority of the vermin that had been inside got out and scattered across the desert. Some were killed for sure, but it's interesting that whenever the military-hating press talks about the butchery that went on, they always show the same two or three charred corpses. Our pilots were destroying vehicles and other military materiel. The muzzie rats were a secondary consideration, and most evaporated into the sand dunes. The "Highway of Death" bullshit caused Bush41 and Gen. Schwartzkopf to get cold feet and call off the dogs way too soon.

So they were retreating in tanks and other military vehicles and were likely armed. Do the DUmmies actually think that all that military equipment was simply going to be abandoned?
