There is, I believe, a dream we all share that holds true day after week after month after year ....

This is the dream that George bush will be seen as one of the worst presidents in history.

The majority of the American public continues to hold a negative view of him. While Obama gets slammed for this or that failing, few doubt the root causes are all George bush's fault. On issue after issue, one hears how Obama's effort to fix one of george's Messes wasn't the right strategy or was poorly executed. Notice, thou, that few lay the root cause at Obama's feet. Everyone knows the fundamentals of the multiple crises we face are the result of george having been in the presidency for eight years too many.

A subset of the dream that George bush will be seen as one of the worst presidents in history is that he knows it and is forever painfully aware of it. While I'm less sure this is currently true, evidence points to it's veracity.

George bush will not be sharing the stage with Barack Obama for a number of reasons, I'm certain. But we can all rest assured that one of them is that he can not bear the obvious direct comparison of winner to loser.

Barack Obama, in the case of bin laden, can rightfully claim "Mission Accomplished."

George bush, swaggerer in chief, can not.

You assholes wanna stop circling the airport and bring this baby in? Enough already.

They've got to rewrite history and smear the records of 40+ presidents so that Obama can be in the top ten...for a little while.

He'll always be at the bottom of the list.

It sounds as if the decrepit old slumlord is trying to convince himself more then anything else.

As disgusted as people were with Clinton when he left office, a few years later he was well-thought-of.  Bush engendered nothing like that level of mockery, and history will be kind to him.  Even Nixon is remembered as an otherwise-solid President who simply crossed a line in his partisan battles.  LBJ for that matter, much as he hated JFK, still benefits from the afterglow of Camelot and is remembered in more or less favorable terms despite later revelations of his low character, vile temper, corruption, and personal cowardice while getting his ticket punched in WW2.

No, the only President in my lifetime who is still universally remembered by the public at large as truly and utterly sucking was Jimmy Carter.  Obama's performance has not sunk to that low-water mark yet, but he still has a year and a half to attain it, and seems to be bending every effort toward that goal.

Denial isn't only a river in Egypt.  The Smelly Houseplant must be snorting some of that kitty litter .

Or, more likely, he's eating/snorting some of the "smart pills" that the cat is leaving behind.

I think with the snuffing of OBL Obama may have achieved a permanent +1 over Jimmeh. That is unless gas continues to go up, the economy goes into free-fall and in 2012 he gets defeated in the largest landslide in election history.

I still consider the sleazy bastard to be beneath contempt.
The embarrassment of his conduct is a scar on American history.

And don't forget how Truman was treated when he left office versus how he's viewed today.

And here I thought his dream would be for a more effective cat litter. But I guess since his wife keeps him locked in the basement with the kitty, sniffing cat litter is the only thrill he gets.

Even Carter had the Mayaguez to bolster his cred  (We only found out much later that it wasn't particularly well-executed), though ultimately ending on the sour note of the Iran hostage crisis and the lethal cluster**** at Desert One.  And while I personally agree with you completely about Slick Willie, he nonetheless polls very well with the general populace.

Didn't a buttload of Marines get killed in the recapture of that ship?

Didn't this happen under Ford? You are referring to the ship right. I had to Wiki it and it seemed the most obvious choice.

Yeah, my bad, I was thinking it was under Carter, but you're right.  And though well-received by the public at the time as a firm and decisive action, it was really a totally scraped-together Marine force put together from odds and ends, thrown in with no prep, which yielded the predictable level of feisty but uncoordinated operation you get from such forces...with the added goodness of the Pentagon war room looking over their shoulders and 'Helping' them.  Casualties were unnecessarily high, but not particularly large either, especially with the huge weekly casualties of Viet Nam still fresh in people's memory.
