With the upcoming 2008 presidential election, tax policy will soon be on voters' minds more than ever. Taxes are one of the central issues in any national election, and it is important for the public to understand candidates' general views toward tax policy as well as their positions on specific issues, such as the alternative minimum tax (AMT) and corporate tax rates. While some candidates have been more forthcoming and specific than others about their stance on various tax issues, they will all need to divulge and elaborate on their positions as the race progresses.
The chart below outlines the candidates' positions on the most important tax questions of this election. As the race narrows and the remaining candidates refine and expound their positions, this page will be augmented.
To view or compare candidates' positions, check one or more boxes below and click "Compare."

this is definitely one of those threads that will be useful in the general. we probably need to move them to Political Ammo when we get past the conventions.

good idea. it's supposed to be updated by the OP as the election progresses.
that whole "no plan" entry is worrisome!!!
-
I see they are all in favor of double (actually triple) taxing those who can't fight back.

But unsurprising.
Very few people understand the linkage between the economy and taxes. Taxes are boring (and not hopeful), so the extreme lefty candidates aren't wasting any time on an comprehensive tax platforms. The other lefty, McCain, has a base that is very into taxes which is why he has a fleshed out plan.

If the merits of comprehensive tax reform were debated by Randy, Paula and Simon on a stage, the American public might pay more attention. *eyeroll*
I, for one, pay a lot of attention. Math and economics were never my strong suit. That's why I married Mr. Belle. :-) Okay, all kidding aside, I have always paid attention to the tax issue because it hits so close to home for us. We rearranged our lives a few years ago to position ourselves for the kiddo's education and our retirement. I'm not counting on "hope and change" to see us through. If a Democrat is elected, I can assure you that I will be hoping I have change (in my pocket). Sigh.

"Yo Dog -- that was just an OK idea. I mean that income bracket part seemed uneven, but you really got strong on the extra sales tax for the Super Rich. Ending with the new Estate tax was a new idea, but I am not sure it worked the way you wanted."
"Well, I am very proud of you. Your presentation binder is really sharp and attention-getting. I can tell you worked really hard on this plan."
"The whole thing doesn't make a bloody bit of sense. I can't see any real savings for the average person and the government doesn't get anything out of it either. If it had been flat front to back at least that would have done something. You need to work harder if you are going to stay for the next round."
(cue music)
"This is Ryan Seacrest -- for this candidate dial 1-800-TAX-ME1. Hey, Simon, I was hoping they would have a special tax for British Citizens who make their money here in the USA."
"Look Ryan, what you REALLY want is for them to tax by the foot."
(crowd goes "oooooooh")
Fade to H&R Block commercial....

Oh, you're good. :-)
Sadly, I could actually see that played out in my head.

It is my secret shame as well... ;)
