You Come for Our Unions We Come for Your Corporate Mega Churches
AFL-CIO President Richard Trumpka gave a rousing speech this week about the need for a mobile, global labor movement to counter-act the attacks on workers around the globe. He pointed out that in a declining economy, politics become vicious and the viscous attack. And most importantly, he noted that the CEO backed Republicans attacked unions and collective bargaining because the unions are weak right now. The Republicans thought it would be an easy kill.
They were wrong.
But instead of just fighting to hang on, we need to fight for the rights of all workers, we need to fight to grow union labor and grow workers rights if we are to save the middle class. We need to grow an army of people dedicated to workers rights who can and will protest peacefully and memorably as they did in Madison at the drop of a hat. We need to take the Madison spirit, the Egyptian spirit, and the Tunisian spirit – and plant it, feed it, nurture it.
Instead of being on the defense, we need to be on the offense. Republicans present the notion that unions are to blame for the budget crisis while urging the parishioners of huge tax exempt mega churches to vote Republican. Mega churches have become political action committees for all intents and purposes, and as such, are on par with how Republicans see unions. If taking away collective bargaining rights is necessary under the guise of a fiscal emergency, what other rights are up for grabs? Perhaps the next right to be targeted should be a Republican PAC such as mega churches

1. Bingo! Sorry but these Mega Churches don't get to dip their
toes in the Public Politics and then claim that they can still be tax exempt.
What about all the churches who teach social justice, can they dip their toes in public policies and keep their tax exempt status?
You goons never have a problem with liberalism being preached from the pulpit.

18. I came to the conclusion last night
(thinking about things again)that the churches are behind less taxes because they are pissed that their members give to the state and then have little to give to them. I know that many churches have members tithe at least 10% - 30% of their income, add to that another 15% - 30% taxes and it doesn't leave much to live on.
They should be advocating for their members by pushing to tax corps and the rich more.
Yep the churches are just greedy, yet the unions who want that money from higher taxes are justified in their quest. Personally I would trust a church a hell of a lot more than I would a union with my money.

19. Plain an simple
Religion should have no part in governing! The separation of church and state is the most important part of our constitution after freedom of speech! IMO-- churches tax exempt status should be revoked. :smoke:
Next time Obama campaigns at a church I'm sure you will say that he shouldn't be there, right?

Anyone who doesn't see unions as being PACs is either blind or stupid.

31. Churches ARE government
Religious organizations' purpose is to raise money.... and then use it to have power over people.
How is that different from a government?
The church doesn't get to take money by gunpoint is one huge difference.
At least if you disagree with a church, you don't attend, and you don't give money.
Govt on the other hand, well try not paying your taxes and Obama just might have a job for you. :-)

I don't see where this attack on churches, mega or otherwise is coming from. I see very little input from any churches, except for maybe on the issue of abortion. OTOH, about the only time I have seen a church with a politician
speaking campaigning there, it's always a DemonRat. Bill Clinton did it a lot and Obama has done it.

Which amendment is it that discusses the separation of church and state?
I know that the 1st amendment states: Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof, but I keep overlooking the one that discusses the separation of church and state.

They had one of those, but it collapsed.
It was called the USSR, and, just like Andy, the Freepers killed it.

Oh goody! everytime the union threatens more people turn against them.
BTW, the Catholic Church donates to political candidates? I don't think so!
-
Given their dependence on Black churches for their GOT(D)V efforts, there is zero chance of this actually happening. Both sides push the envelope on it, neither one wants to really see a day of reckoning.

Black Churches are notoriously political. Is it a regional thing? because I don't know of Churches in the NE that are political, but are Churches in the Midwest and South political?

Democrat moonbats define any group that preaches the sanctity of life as a right wing political organization.
Most white churches preach the sanctity of life, ergo, they tools of the right wing.
Black churches preach the sanctity of the democrat party, and turn a blind eye to whatever that means, because it comes with a government check.

There are always some, including some 'Liberation theology'-type mainly-White churches on the Left. I don't think the megachurches are into this at all, though. Where it happens outside the Black community, it's much more likely to be the small congregations that are very tight-knit in the first place and the cleric feels comfortable playing to the secular political issues as well as the spiritual. The megachurches (Outside the Black community) seem to be much more wary of giving anyone a reason to question their tax exempt status, but Black ones like the Rev. Wright's go much farther out on this since they know nobody in Government has the balls to weather all the cries of 'Racism!' a hard look at them would generate on the Left.

The hypocrisy is amazing.

The white mega-Churches don't do this at all, and if you notice the OP's link posted at DU? they show a 30 member Church as an example.

These are the same people who squeal when mosques are investigated for supporting baby-bombing wife-beaters.

Bally, the moonbats think that any church which doesn't worship at the altar of Gaia or endorse Dems, is a "mega-church."

To lurking DUmmies:
Freedom of religion is a constitutionally protected right.
Freedom of unions is not.
Deal with it.

Corporate churches? I wonder if there are denominational rivalries between the First church of Wal-Mart and Our Lady of Perpetual Savings Target Brand Church?

Ever since they teamed up to drive away the Church of Latter-Day KMarts, things just haven't been the same between them.

I missed something earlier . . .
But they do it very slowly.
But, with fluid motion.
