Superman suddenly shuns the ‘American way’ (http://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2011/apr/28/superman-suddenly-shuns-the-american-way/)
The latest sign of the end of the “American Era†or just a comic book publisher’s publicity stunt?
In a new story line, Superman renounces his U.S. citizenship because he is “tired of having my actions construed as instruments of U.S. policy.â€
The Kansas farm boy turned superhero, long considered a pop-culture embodiment of small-town patriotic values, makes the announcement in this week’s issue of Action Comics, telling the president’s national security adviser that “truth, justice and the American way†is not enough anymore.
“I intend to speak before the United Nations tomorrow and inform them that I am renouncing my U.S. citizenship,†a frustrated Man of Steel tells the American official. >>>
In the story, Superman flies to Tehran and positions himself as a silent peacemaker between armed security forces and pro-democracy demonstrators. Though he takes no action against police, the Iranian government turns the superhero’s symbolic intervention into an international incident, claims American interference and calls Superman’s presence an act of war. >>>
But the Man of Steel’s cold feet left some Americans furious: “He was never a natural born citizen anyway. … Go back to Krypton,†one disappointed fan wrote Wednesday on Fox News’ website after the story broke.

Comrads rejoice! The capitalist icon is being subverted to the cause. Not only does Superman dis the US but the cartoon is used to flip off and criticize God as well. The destructiveness and godlessness of our secular liberal culture has permeated the last bastion of enjoyment - comic books. There is no place in America left that is not decaying because of liberalism. Its probably no coincidence this happens under Comrade Stinkys watch. Next thing you know Clark Kent will come out of the closet.

A different perspective from wizbang.
In the story in question, Superman is summoned to Camp David, where he is confronted by the president's National Security Advisor. The NSA expresses the administration's extreme irritation with Superman's recent actions -- outraged at the Iranian government's violent oppression of protesters, he flew in and joined the dissidents. There, he simply stood there and allowed his presence to assert his solidarity with their cause -- and his mere presence abated the violence for the duration.
The goernment of Iran, however, was not pleased, stating that Superman -- as not only an American citizen, but as a licensed agent of the United States government (a special status some superheroes in the DC Comics universe hold) -- had committed several acts of war against Iran, and the US was not happy to have to answer for his actions. At that point, Superman realized that he had, indeed, put the US in a very awkward position, and was likely to continue to do so in the future -- so he declared that he would present himself before the United Nations and formally renounce his American citizenship.
In the context of this story, that action was anything but a liberal, anti-American gesture. Indeed, I'd argue it was a very pro-American move, and actually a rather conservative gesture.

Maybe he can give his citizenship to barack?

Maybe he can give his citizenship to barack?
...or take him back in time so his momma can abort him.

1) Actually, yeah, failure to support Iranian reformers is a national embarrassment
2) If Superman's writers equate one president's one policy with the entirety of what America stands for then they don't know what makes America works and why

The next thing you know it'll be Ratman & Bobin driving a Volt and riding a Segway.

We've already got a "Captain Planet."
:whatever:

Didn't they pull this crap in the last Superman movie?
'Superman IV: Quest for Peace' was as awful as it sounds. At least you get to laugh at a young Jon Cryer as Lex Luthor's nephew.

Why yes, yes it was.

The old superman was in fear for his life around kryptonite wasnt he?
I guessing the new one will live in fear of Palinite.

Maybe he'll start pronouncing his father's name as Gor-El instead of Jor-El.

Poor Superman , he is sexually frustrated. From the time he was 13 he found that if he masterbated he would blow holes in the side of his house.
He knew he could never have sex with a human from earth with out blowing their head off. So after his father began to complain about the cattle that he found headless in the pasture, it was time for the boy to move on.
After all these years this poor man may believe he is responsible for the earthquakes when he did his thing in the pacific and the the problems Japan has now. He was alone on a boat sailing under the stars thinking of where home was and , BAMM over board when the stuff and the earth moved.
A good idea to have him move to the middle east, lots of huge sand dunes he can blast the hell out of.

Also wasn't Superman created by a Canadian? Therefore he should be Canadian and not American in my books.
I think Superman might need to release his birth certificate...

Only people who are 'hiding' it need to 'release' it.

One of them was Canadian.
Created by American writer Jerry Siegel and Canadian-born American artist Joe Shuster in 1932 while both were living in Cleveland, Ohio

There was a 'Superman IV?' :o

People are concerned about what a cartoon character does?

I think they're reacting to the leftist trope that there's nothing in America worth pledging allegiance to save for a solid progressive tax system.
It's the same leftist bullshit that says you have to prove how bold you are by deliberately insulting Christians while treating Islam deferentially.
It's not Superman they're reacting to it's the leftist urge to take every American icon and rip them up. If the left could find some way to debase hot dogs, baseball and apple pie they would. The resulting hue and cry wouldn't be about food and sports.
-
Superman is an illegal alien.

I know Snuggs... I was being a smart ass.

Superman is an illegal alien.
I don't think that he technically is illegal though he is an alien. I believe the capsule that he came to earth in was a gestation chamber. He was actually "born" after touching down in Kansas. Meaning he was born on US soil UNLESS they have retconned that with the several "Crisis" series they've had in the last few years.
Also, although I haven't read any new comics in years I seem to remember a few years back that DC took some heat for changing "truth, justice, and the American way" into just "truth and justice." I just can't remember how far back that was.

Originally he was sent as a baby. It was only recently that they rebooted the story to use the gestation chamber.

You're right that he was originally sent as a baby. It was in 86 that things changed. I wonder if things have been changed since then. I read the "Crisis on Infinite Earths" series back in 85 that made sweeping changes to the DC universe. I know that there have been other two or three (maybe more) "crisis" stories since then that have made changes including negating some of the stuff that happened in the 85 series. I just don't know what the changes are. For all I know in the current continuity he may have arrived as a baby.

I haven't read any of the comics since the 70's , but occasionally something like this pops up in the news and I'll read several articles about it. They usually give some recent background on story lines.

Superman was all for the American way when he was kicking the crap out of Japs and Nazis. Now Superman is supposed to be some PC metro-fag in tights. Fergit'em ::)

Agreed Claymore. The left has their stickly little poop fingers all over this, and it really makes me sick.
If the left could find some way to debase hot dogs, baseball and apple pie they would. The resulting hue and cry wouldn't be about food and sports.
Well, it's fairly likely that some of them can, and have deFaced hot dogs... :whatever:

The change to "truth and justice" came about during the last Superman movie in 05 or 06 (I'm not sure exactly when). Don't bother watching it, it was a turd.

Despite him renouncing his US citizenship, it should be obvious that Superman is a conservative and shares most of those values. If he was a liberal, he would use his power to enforce his beliefs on people instead of just enforcing laws.
