PLEASANT GROVE, Ala. – Dozens of tornadoes ripped through the South, flattening homes and businesses and killing at least 214 people in six states in the deadliest outbreak in nearly 40 years.
<snip>
Alabama's state emergency management agency said it had confirmed 131 deaths, while there were 32 in Mississippi, 29 in Tennessee, 13 in Georgia, eight in Virginia and one in Kentucky.
The National Weather Service's Storm Prediction Center in Norman, Okla., said it received 137 tornado reports into Wednesday night.
Some of the worst damage was in Tuscaloosa, a city of more than 83,000 that is home to the University of Alabama. Neighborhoods there were leveled by a massive tornado caught on video by a tower-mounted news camera that barreled through late Wednesday afternoon.
Say a prayer fro Tucker's wife, that she is ok.
If y'all have been reading Tucker's posts lately you know that he and his wife are in the process of moving to E TN. She is down here and he had gone back up north last week, and was due to come back down this weekend I think.
The county they are moving to, was hard hit last night about 10 or so. So far, 6 are dead. Emergency personnel are still searching.
I know they are moving to the Greenville area, but not sure exactly where. The worst part hit was on the edge of Greenville.
He has not checked in today....
I slid thru the last line of storms with no problem and thought I was thru this one OK. But right now, while I am on the backside of the storm line...a big storm is kicking up and the tornado watch has just been extended again.
We had a spring like this back in, I think, 1984. The global warmist will shouting it's all my fault for using to much energy. They live in the woods and eat raw food, you know..
You just keep your head down and stay safe, sir.
How are you and yours, ma'am? The map says you aren't far from where these damned things were wreaking havoc.
Jeez, deb, did that hail destroy the glass tabletop?
Looks ugly....
The last time I saw weather like this was 1993... it just would not stop raining.
Warm and sunny today, though.
Small world Deb, one of my best friends was out at Norris last weekend and took pictures. She lives in Knoxville.
A local paper said, "No significant damage in Mt. Olive............"
That sounds promising.
That's good news...make sure to let us know when you hear from Rusty.
Remember "Preacher" from milnet? I think he's in AL too....he's an EMS worker.
There was just a news broadcast from Greene County...there are still people missing... :(
Deb, I'll ask him to post something here. If he's too busy, I'll make an announcement.
Thanks, CG.
I wish we'd hear from Tucker.... :(
rustybayonet is OK. We didn't have time to talk; he has a neighbor's roof on his roof.
This is where I was today...where I will be tomorrow. 8 confirmed fatalities in this community. Please pray for the victims of the tornadoes.
Just spoke to Rusty. He estimates - with the semi truck drivers - that it will be years before any semblance of normalcy returns to his area. The truckers said the piles of scrap and rubble are worse than the aftermath of Katrina.
That's what they are saying ...comparing with Katrina..
As if it isn't bad enough over this way and all the way down through AL...if you haven't seen any news regarding Memphis...it's just horrible.
ABC evening news was saying the damage will be worse than Katrina over there too....
Rusty just called me. He said, among many other things about the storms, that one of his acquaintances at the Boy Scout troop has a neighbor who walked out into his back yard. He saw a heart on the ground, and he couldn't figure out where it came from. He called Rusty's acquaintance over, and they both walked around and couldn't figure it out.
They dialed 911, the cop came, and they looked up and saw a woman's body impaled on a big tree limb.
The cop just called the coroner, and they took the body and heart away.
He also said they're bringing dumpsters big enough to put a car in.
Good God. :o
How horrible!!
Her poor family....they will finally know what happened to her, though I'm not that's a good thing, but at least she was found and they can have a funeral.... :(
