Tornadoes devastate South, killing at least 214 (http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/us_severe_weather)
By GREG BLUESTEIN and JAY REEVES, Associated Press – 24 mins ago

PLEASANT GROVE, Ala. – Dozens of tornadoes ripped through the South, flattening homes and businesses and killing at least 214 people in six states in the deadliest outbreak in nearly 40 years.

<snip>

Alabama's state emergency management agency said it had confirmed 131 deaths, while there were 32 in Mississippi, 29 in Tennessee, 13 in Georgia, eight in Virginia and one in Kentucky.

The National Weather Service's Storm Prediction Center in Norman, Okla., said it received 137 tornado reports into Wednesday night.

Some of the worst damage was in Tuscaloosa, a city of more than 83,000 that is home to the University of Alabama. Neighborhoods there were leveled by a massive tornado caught on video by a tower-mounted news camera that barreled through late Wednesday afternoon.

Prayers up for the survivors.

Say a prayer fro Tucker's wife, that she is ok.

If y'all have been reading Tucker's posts lately you know that he and his wife are in the process of moving to E TN. She is down here and he had gone back up north last week, and was due to come back down this weekend I think.

The county they are moving to, was hard hit last night about 10 or so. So far, 6 are dead. Emergency personnel are still searching.

I know they are moving to the Greenville area, but not sure exactly where. The worst part hit was on the edge of Greenville.

He has not checked in today....

How are you and yours, ma'am? The map says you aren't far from where these damned things were wreaking havoc.

I slid thru the last line of storms with no problem and thought I was thru this one OK. But right now, while I am on the backside of the storm line...a big storm is kicking up and the tornado watch has just been extended again.

We had a spring like this back in, I think, 1984. The global warmist will shouting it's all my fault for using to much energy. They live in the woods and eat raw food, you know..

Don't worry about me, I've been lucky. For the past month, I've watched these storm fronts open up and let my area slid thru a less violent area of the front. My sister, 40 miles to the north, on the other hand hasn't been so lucky.

We are fine, thank God. We had wicked wind off and on most of the day, and could just see the "clouds with circulation" going past to the west and north, several times. Our first tornado warning was before 11 yesterday morning, and the last warning was finally lifted about 11:30 last night. It is so rare to even be under tornado watches, here, until this year. We've been having them at least once a week, it seems, for the last month. We were very, very lucky.

Many school districts started sending kids home around noon. Our county didn't, and then had to hold several middle and high school kids until about 5, because it got really bad about then. We had 2 heavy hail storms, first one was about 8 or so. It had a lot of wind with it, and I really thought we were going to lose some windows. Then we were hit again, about 30 minutes later. We had taken the glass off of the smaller tabletops on the deck, but not on the front porch until after the first. Good thing we did, one of the heavy wicker chairs was lifted up onto two, would have had broken glass everywhere if we hadn't taken it inside.

A friend of my son's was on the interstate, his sunroof and back window were shattered, and had one hailstone go through the windshield about the size of a golf ball, shattered the window, but didn't collapse it.

Lots of trees down, and of course lots of hail damage. I have never been so glad to no longer live in a house that was surrounded by big tall trees. There is also a lot of flooding around, because we had almost 4 inches of rain.

The videos from other places in TN, and particularly in AL, have been so awful. Some places, there is just nothing left but debris. The local weather people kept saying these were "midwest tornadoes". Southern tornadoes just pop up and down, even though there may be "tails" they are more like downbursts, than true tornadoes. Not yesterday. So many people really had no where to go for safety.

Took these pics after the first hailstorm. They aren't very good, but I couldn't get them any lighter.

Looks ugly....

No, I had taken them off a couple of weeks ago, before another storm. The deck is really high up, a good 12 or more feet, and I've been afraid of the wind we've had lately as we are pretty high up, so I hadn't put them back on yet. But I hadn't taken the ones off the tables on the front porch until last night, between the two storms. Good thing I did, too, or I would have had glass from at least one if not two tables everywhere.

I am in no way complaining about what we got. I'm really just stunned and amazed at what we got. I've been here almost 30 years, and the weather we've had the last 6 months has been so unusual for us. The super cold and all the snow during the winter, and now the winds, and storms we've had the last month- 6 weeks. We had a "flash storm" (what the hell is that?) on Monday afternoon. It just came out of nowhere, and did a lot of damage knocking over huge, huge old trees onto houses and cars. Not everyone who lost power from it, had their power back yesterday before the new ones hit yesterday.

Someone posted online in the newspaper comments on the storm....

"Someone better give Mother Nature some serious allergy drugs to get her to stop sneezing"....

I think someone needs to give her a whole bunch of chocolate and she also needs to get laid....she's been a real bitch lately.

No more storms forecasted until Monday.

TVA is "spilling water" at 9 dams until further notice. This is from Norris Dam taken on the 19th....it's been a couple of years since they had to do this.

I've been trying all day, but I cannot call them, since apparently all the lines are down.

Stay safe!  I have a friend on Facebook who lives in Huntsville, Alabama and she said a lot of her friends & family members homes have been destroyed.

Is it typical for that area to get a lot of tornadoes this time of year?  I lived in southern Wisconsin.  Tornado watches/warnings happened, but we never had a problem with the tornadoes coming through our city.  They usually touched down in an open field for a few minutes and then disappeared.

Our sister-in-law lives in Helena, AL, (south of Birmingham), and apparently the storm that hit Tuskaloosa just missed them there.  The Tuskaloosa tornado has now been rated as an EF-5, and stayed on the ground for an extremely long distance.

Apparently it totally destroyed a Big Lots store in Tuscaloosa, and they are finding merchandise with Big Lots tags on it from that store all over the southern suburbs of Birmingham.......the stuff was carried by this storm for over 100 miles.

A good part of the northern Birmingham area (near the airport) is still without power now for nearly 30 hours.

2nd most deadly tornado outbreak since 1932, the worst was 4/3-4/74. That was caused by global cooling, I suppose this one is from Gorebull Climate Scam.

Good luck to those people.

What an afternoon and night the 27th.  Tornados started about 1-2 in the afternoon just north of us, first Cullman [hit a second time in evening], had one and the weathers guys said that storm was mild compared to what was coming.  And this time they were right!!!!
The big one that hit Tuscaloosa and headed to us was one of about 8 on the ground in the area at the same time.  Our neighbors from Mississippi shared it.  Started on the west side of the state about 1/2 mile in diameter and grew to almost  1 mile across, with and estimated wind of 150-200mph, and it stayed on the ground for 184 miles across Alabama, taking out alot of homes, businesses.  At least two towns are gone . The center passed through Fultondale about 2 1/2 miles south of us, and we could see the edge of it about 1 mile away.  [Since we don't have a basement, we were at the daughters].  We could see 'stuff' flying in the air, when what looked like a 4X8 sheet of plywood went overhead, it was basement time!!!!!  When we finally went back home I thought I had lost shingles from the house, but after looking - nope-part of somebodies roof is on mine.  Pieces of tin roofing, shingles, chunks of wood, pine branches [no pine trees near here], and alot of insulation were all over the neighborhood.  [gave me something to do yesterday, since we didn't have power].Fortunately no injuries or deaths here, but as of last night after we got power back on, [estimated 400,000 still without power]. Last night TV was saying at least 204 deaths in the state so far, haven't heard this morning yet.
Anyway glad it's over------

So good to hear from you Rusty!!!  :yahoo:

We did some driving around late this afternoon and this evening....subdivision across the road from ours looks like they decided to use "blue tarps" instead of shingles. Just a half a block away....

Paper had a copy of a check from 1989, with a Rainesville AL address on it....found in a yard in South Knox County yesterday morning after the storm. Someone else found a National Geographic magazine in their yard, also with a Rainesville address on it. Not sure how far away Rainesville is, but we're 120 miles northeast of Chattanooga.

That's what they are saying ...comparing with Katrina..

As if it isn't bad enough over this way and all the way down through AL...if you haven't seen any news regarding Memphis...it's just horrible.

ABC evening news was saying the damage will be worse than Katrina over there too....

I was up in Clayton and Mountain City, GA yesterday where there was far more destruction than I realized.  A huge FEMA billboard was erected with contact info.  I saw a FEMA guy in the Stekoa Creek Trading Post asking to put up signs in their windows.  I wonder if they're getting the calls they thought they would?  It wouldn't surprise me if folks are a bit leery.

Around the lakes a lot of homes and boathouses were tossed into the water.  A house was almost into the southbound lane of 441 in Mountain City with a huge swath of trees down all around it.  There was blessedly only 1 death that I heard about, but more injured.  It's a really small place and this was pretty brutal for them.

My county was spared for the most part.  I think we only had some damage along the border with Rabun County.

Thanks to everyone - as stated before, my family and I were extremely lucky--sorry to say many weren't.....

The community, Pleasant Grove, the neighborhood of one of our associate ministers;

The entire community is gone

this video was taken in areas less than three miles from my house, and this is what 2/3 of Alabama counties look like now.  When this 'big' one hit, and stayed on the ground for 184 miles,  it spun off 23 others in the area and that day we had 127 total throughout the state - that's just a indication of how lucky we were.

Just two areas, one just to the south of me [Fultondale],and one southwest......

There are just no capable words to explain the damage those storms did...it takes looking at pictures - which are still not as brutal as viewing the destruction in person.

When seeing the pictures or the videos, it's amazing that more people weren't killed.

I saw pics of Memphis on tv this morning...only thing visible were the rooftops. At least many people had the time, effort and ability to afford to remove many or all of their belongings out of their homes to save them, even though their homes will be total losses.

With tornadoes, there is never time to safe anything other than yourself, family and maybe pets.

Rusty just called me. He said, among many other things about the storms, that one of his acquaintances at the Boy Scout troop has a neighbor who walked out into his back yard. He saw a heart on the ground, and he couldn't figure out where it came from. He called Rusty's acquaintance over, and they both walked around and couldn't figure it out.

They dialed 911, the cop came, and they looked up and saw a woman's body impaled on a big tree limb.

The cop just called the coroner, and they took the body and heart away.

He also said they're bringing dumpsters big enough to put a car in.
