Title: Kids and Beds

For those with kids, what age did you move them out of the crib and into a bed they can get out of.

Age it's as much a factor as size and ability.  When it became obvious they were going to crawl out anyway, it was time to move on.  It was safer (closer to the floor) to go ahead and get a big boy/girl bed.

my little one is like me a sleep walker and talker...she was out of a crib before she could actually walk very well, as she would twist around, get her feet out of the crib and stuck in the rails and then wake herself when she tried to move again.  So at a few months short of one year we got her a little pink disney princess bed.  She sleeps everywhere but her own bed!

Once they climbed out of the crib on their own, they crib went bye bye.

It took a few days for them to learn they had to stay in bed, but better than the worry they would fall on their heads climbing out of the crib.

You and I will never be offered to participate in the "Point/Counterpoint" segment on "60 Minutes".

I take that as a compliment, sir.

We bought a regular mattress and frame but just laid the mattress and boxspring on the floor when he was about 3? Then we installed the frame after he got more adept at climbing in and out of it.

She's almost 20 months now, and a few weeks ago I caught her in the corner of the crib grabbing one side with her hands, and had one leg over the other side. She was trying to get the other leg over but was falling just short. We figured it was time, but the bed we got was elevated off the ground and has a ladder to get into it and a slide to get down. There is also a play are below the bed. We may just put the bed down there and let her sleep there until she is used to it.

She sounds cute. And active! :-)

Yes, I would put the mattress on the floor until you feel comfortable leaving her elevated and alone.

when they can climb out of the crib on their own.. its different for all of us. but we immediately put a no grip knob on the inside of her door to make sure she didnt wander around at night and fall down the stairs.

of course, she took that no grip plastic shell off the door knob about two days later and threw it at us... but our hearts were in the right places.

Our oldest son, back when he was a tot and an only child, was a special challenge.  I installed a screen door on his bedroom door.  It could be latched from the outside.  He was confined yet we could still hear him.  That kid could unscrew light bulbs out of the ceiling fixture.

We've got a safety gate at the top of the stairs, but just in case I've been training her to use the staircase just in case she defeats that.

I was 19 when he was 2.  I had to learn "on the job" and improvise.  :-)

That boy was Jethro Bodine.  He was almost 4 feet tall and weighed 50 pounds by the time he was three.  He was born with a full set of teeth.  :o :innocent:
