Detroit: OCCUPATION AT CATHERINE FERGUSON HIGH SCHOOL!
OCCUPATION AT CATHERINE FERGUSON HIGH SCHOOL!

STUDENTS AND SUPPORTERS SIT-IN TO DEMAND THAT NO DETROIT PUBLIC SCHOOL CLOSES

Following in the civil rights tradition of Dr. Martin Luther King and Rosa Parks, Catherine Ferguson students — along with their babies and toddlers, teachers and supporters — have begun a peaceful occupation of Catherine Ferguson Academy (CFA). CFA, located at 2750 Selden, is a Detroit Public school that is slated to be closed in June. The students who are sitting down have five demands:

No School Closings

Keep All Detroit Schools Public – No More Charters or Privatization

Reinstate all programs and services that have been eliminated, including art & music as well as counselors & social workers

Student Control of Curriculum and School Character to assure that every Detroit school provides equal, quality education for all

No discipline or retaliation against any of the participants in the occupation

Catherine Ferguson Academy (CFA) is a Detroit public high school for pregnant and parenting teen girls– the only one of its kind in the nation. Providing an excellent education and services for both the teen mothers and their children, CFA has received international attention, numerous awards and is the subject of several documentaries.

If they close this special high school, it'll be difficult for Detroit's inner city, single, black, teenaged mothers to continue being the inspiring success story they've been for generations.

Yeah, because you sure as hell don't want those poor black kids to learn something.

They could bus them to or become sister cities with Jackson Mississippi where that tradition is still going strong.   :-)

A group of students from the Catherine Ferguson Academy — a school for pregnant teens and teen parents — were arrested Friday at the school while protesting its pending closure.

At the scene, Detroit Public School Police Department Chief Roderick Grimes confirmed the arrests; he said the students “refused to comply” with an order to leave the building.

From the Press Press comments,

Quote
As another arm of the "ENTITLEMENT Crowd" squeals, it costs taxpayers even more by way of requiring involvement from the law enforcement community. The officers called to disband the protest have much more urgent tasks to perform, but the babymakers demand their fair share anyway and then some. Stuff like...

housing subsidies
utility payment assistance
foodstamps
WIC
healthcare for themselves and offspring
free education
free cell phones
free or reduced rates for transportation

...and a bleeding heart:

These kids have had a rough break or two and all republicans like bing & bobb want to do is take money away from them to make a few billionaires even richer. How sad for Detroit and for America. I hope President Obama intervenes and reverses this bad decision.

Call Obama!

There's a whooole lotta Name Deleteds posting there.

Student Control of Curriculum
  That should work out well.

You buy bananas and buy bananas and show'em how to put condoms on them and they still get pregnant. Fire the teachers.

 :whatever:

I'll agree that it was a waste of law enforcement resources. Just turn off the power and water, then leave. They'd only stick around for a few hours, then go home themselves.

He'll do that right after he fires Boehner as speaker and brings Nancy back. Incidentally, doesn't ol' Nance bear a striking resemblance to the Runaway Bride?

In words they can understand, these accommodating young ladies need to be taught that they're lookin' like a fool with their pants on the ground.

I bet they all make good grades in....

1-How to milk the welfare system.
2-How to get the most foodstamps.
3-How to get the most for your foodstamps.
4-Getting the biggest house with your section 8 money.
5-Hiding all your menz in the house made easy.
6-Borrowing and loaning kids for extra benefits.

Yes, because a 25 percent graduation rate isn't ENOUGH of a failure rate yet.
