Title: SIGH....I hate hospitals
Post by: Randy on April 04, 2011, 04:54:39 PM
especially when you're the patient.

I woke up this morning and my right eye wouldn't close all the way in the shower. A few hours later at work my mouth was leaking air on the right side when I drank. I decided it was time to call the Dr. He told me to "get to the nearest emergency room ASAP, if I couldn't drive myself to call 911"
I became a believer at that point and left work. It's most likely Bells Palsy but I get to stay overnight to be sure.

This sucks.

Did you mention to the ER doc all the time you spend perusing the DUmp?  I'm sure there's a PEL for that in some OSHA handbook somewhere, and I think we're all over that exposure limit.  Especially now that we're looking for who's callsign could be the reincarnation of TiTty boy.

Have you had bells palsy before?

Hubby had Bells Palsy years before I met him.    His left side of the face melted down.    Fortunately when I met him, and found he was so ugly he made my dog howl, I suggested he grow a beard.   He did and turned into one heck of a good looking guy.--so good looking woman were beginning to notice him ----rats -----

He was never given antibiotics for the problem just sent for Acupuncture.   It must have been a horrid problem for him through the years until I met him.

The left side of his face and mouth are numb, any dental work he has on that side, he needs no Novocaine.

Strange disease, a horror for a woman but men can cover it up with a beard and no one notices.

its considered a medical emergency???
I found some info on it

WHAT IS BELL'S PALSY?
Bells palsy is a condition that causes the facial muscles to weaken or become paralyzed. It's caused by trauma to the 7th cranial nerve, and is not permanent.

The symptoms are also similar to a stroke.

Yep, it sounds like Bells Palsy, that has a great recovery rate though. I hope you feel better. Oh, and just said a Prayer for you.

Oh hell's bells, being in the hospital does suck, big-time!   You're in our thoughts!

My best wishes to you and a prayer sent your way   :-)

For a brass or woodwimp player to get bell's palsy, that's basically a real problem. As some have noted, it's not a permanent thing, but as I understand it, recovery time can be very lengthy.

Oh, speaking of OSHA. There's no PEL limit for the DUmp, but there is an Threshold Limit Value (TLV) under the ACGIH Standard for Noise.

80 dBA.

If you go into the DUmp, ya gotta wear hearing protection.  :-)

Thanks for the well wishes and prayers, they worked because they let me out late yesterday evening after what my Dr described as "The fastest neurological workup in the history of medical science". There was a damn good reason it went that fast. The Hospital just opened Saturday. :rotf: I was the 94th patient overall and the 12th inpatient admitted. I was a guinea pig for alot of their shiny new equipment too. So that was why everything went so fast. My discharge was held up for a couple hours after the Dr. decided I could go because they hadn't officially admitted me yet because of glitches in the computer they were chasing out of the system. :-)

I've never had Bells Palsy before but I've heard of it and talked to people who've had it before. I suspected Bells was the problem from the get-go because I wasn't having any walking, talking or dexterity issues with my hand at all. I'd been at work for 4 and a half hours by the time I called my PCP. They were concerned enough to admit me because Bells affects the forehead along with everything else but mine still worked at the time. Of course this morning it's as dead as the rest of my face, go figure.   ::)

It's supposed to get worse before it gets better and it is. It may take days/weeks/months to clear up or it may stick around forever. I love certainty.

I'm wearing an eyepatch and have to use artificial tears to keep my eye moist and have to tape it shut at night to avoid scratching it when I'm asleep. Fun times, fun times.

Randy, they confirmed that it's definitely Bell's Palsy then?

Did they use the machine that goes, "Bing!"

Good to see you're mostly OK (save for the neurological-pathology that makes you a conservative).

Randy, it's good to hear that it wasn't a stroke or some other brain problem!!

Randy, good to hear that they got you in and out so quickly. When SR (SarasotaRepub--my husband) went into the local hospital in Sarasota, they admitted him to the ER quickly, but then kept him in the ER from around 10am til almost 8 pm. Sadly his was a stroke, but he's continuing to progress. Hope you heal quickly

As much as they can. They know it's not a stroke so by elimination it's Bells.

Thanks again for the good wishes from everyone. It's progressed as the days worn on but they told me it most likely would.

SLW I went in at 9am and they had me all poked prodded and run through the machines by 11. Then they had to decide what to do with me and stuff me in a room. I was in one from about 12:15 till 8:45 when they kicked me out.
It's good to hear SR is progressing well. He has my prayers and best wishes for a speedy recovery. It's a blessing he has you to help and inspire him.

Randy, when I had my stroke my right side was completely paralyzed from the top of my head to the tips of my toes. I don't remember much from that time so I can't really share what you are going through though.  Do they know what caused it?

Sorry you are going through this. Bitch and moan as much as you want, we are here for you.

Something has swollen around the 7th cranial nerve and pinched it and caused all this. They don;t know what causes it. Viruses can do it, ear infections can do it, TMJ even. There's several they suspect and none pinned down. They don't even know for sure what to treat it with. They can try antibiotics or steroids. My Dr said why try them as they'd do more harm than good. It goes away on it's own and no one has shown any treatment that works better.
So here I sit with my eyepatch and  eye drops fixing to head to work with a dead face LOL

Well, look at the bright side!

As long as you don't drool, you'll like a real badass with the eyepatch!

They put SR through so many tests at the hospital, many very invasive. They never did determine the cause of the stroke. The internist said they can't tell him what to do to prevent another, other than the standard don't smoke, don't drink advice. That waiting for the body to heal has been working in his case. Things are gradually getting better on their own. Glad that you have a doc who's not pushing unnecessary treatment, but hope your problems resolve themselves quickly.

Me too, and wondering how the Bell's is doing.

Sending prayers.

My step-nephew was a forceps delivery and one tong of the forceps grabbed him on his right cheek. The nerve was permanently damaged, causing Bell's on the entire right side of his face. His eye does not completely close and he uses drops in it before going to bed at night, but has never worn an eye patch, nor does he smile on that side of his face. He's about 40 now, and has always been a cutie, and still is, even with expression only on the one side of his face. It's not all that noticeable, but since it happened at birth, we've never seen him any other way. Though I did hear that it was rather disconcerting to his lady friends, that he slept with one eye open.

The ex mother-in-law got it from a virus, sometime in her 40's, before I met her. She ended up having the nerve cut, as back then (40 some years ago) that was the only treatment. She was then able to have "expression" on both sides of her face, but had no feeling on that side. Because of no feeling, she would often have food (or drool) on that side of her face or chin but unaware because of no feeling.

Of the two cases...I think my nephew, by doing nothing, made the right choice in dealing with it. Opt for the rakish grin and the eye patch....and expect to have a lot of women flirt with you.... :-)

Sorry to be late getting back to this, my internet usage has been spotty lately.  :-)

Early last week sucked. It had spread to my whole face and made life harder.  :hammer: Friday I noticed my eyes were closing and by Saturday night I had my lips back. By Monday morning the pains and numbnesses were gone and I was back 100%, 2 weeks to the day from when I first started having problems.

Evidently the prayers worked. Thanks again to all.  :-)
