We just got our power back on after over 3 1/2 hours. No storm or rain even, just high winds. Man, this is the longest I've went without coffee except for sleeping in a long time. :-)

At least it was still daytime. Nothing worse than losing power at night.

That's WHY I have a Percolator and a propane gas burner camp stove thingy. :-)

My wife put the percolator away somewhere and forgot where. The gas stove works well enough when the power is out . I still haven't seen how high the winds were, but they've calmed down to around 25 mph.

I use my percolator daily because the drip coffee makers just don't cut it. I can NEVER get my coffee strong enough. We've been having solid 30 MPH winds here today with gusts up to 50 MPH.

I buy the dark blends of coffee and add extra when I make it. The best cup is that first one I get when the pot is only half full.

Ohh, you and I would be at war over that!! :hammer: :hammer: :hammer: Doing that ruins the entire pot of coffee. It's not as if it's strong enough to begin with, but taking the best part kills the rest. That said, were you to make a fresh pot after doing that, I MIGHT forgive you!! :-)

I found out this morning why it took over three hours to get the power back yesterday. The wind snapped off a power pole at ground level about two blocks away. Wind speeds reached over 50 mph yesterday.

Concur with the generator idea.
I bought a Kohler 17kW standby generator with transfer switch when I bought my house. While we haven't had all that many power outages, we were definitely glad when they happened. I think the longest stretch was about 6 hours.
17kW is enough to run the furnace, a/c, most lights in the house, the garage door openers, and even a couple of ovens before it starts bogging down.
I change the oil in the engine every year and just put a new 12VDC battery in it a few weeks ago, and it really is a handy thing to have.
I can make all the freakin' coffee I want when the power goes out. I've got Mr. Kohler cranking out the V's......

I wanted to have one of those installed at the houses I lived in up in MN. They aren't cheap, but they are handy. I was going to go with the natural gas powered type. Here in North Texas, we seem to have power outages regularly. The longest one being right near ten hours. Every time we have an outage, it's at least four hours before it gets restored, if not longer.

We've got propane, which I'm not fond of. But propane heats the house, runs the generator, runs the water heater, and lights the burner up underneath that percolator you've got. :wink:

Only 3 hours? When the powers goes off here I know not to expect power for at least 6 hours. The longest I went without power was 6 days :)

Yup--just like being back on the boat after a couple of days...no hot water, no hot food (except microwave), no laundry...yay!
