"A society will be judged on the basis of how it treats its weakest members"

~Pope John Paul II

"...the moral test of government is how that government treats those who are in the dawn of life, the children; those who are in the twilight of life, the elderly; those who are in the shadows of life; the sick, the needy and the handicapped. "
~Last Speech of Hubert H. Humphrey

"Our society must make it right and possible for old people not to fear the young or be deserted by them, for the test of a civilization is the way that it cares for its helpless members".
~Pearl S. Buck

"Any society, any nation, is judged on the basis of how it treats its weakest members -- the last, the least, the littlest."
~Cardinal Roger Mahony, In a 1998 letter, Creating a Culture of Life

"A decent provision for the poor is the true test of civilization."

"A nation's greatness is measured by how it treats its weakest members."
~ Mahatma Ghandi

"The measure of a society is found in how they treat their weakest and most helpless citizens. As Americans, we are blessed with circumstances that protect our human rights and our religious freedom, but for many people around the world, deprivation and persecution have become a way of life."
~James Earl "Jimmy" Carter, Jr.

The DUmmies are right we treat our weakest members horribly here in America.
We have all kinds of govt programs that give them just enough to survive on. Then we convince those people that they are powerless to improve their lives on their own. So every 2 years the Democrats promise them even more goodies if they vote for them, then blame the GOP when they don't find the new ponies in their back yards. If the left had any compassion they would be encouraging people to go out and try to improve their own lives and give them the tools in order to do so. The old cliche, Give a man a fish, and he eats for a day, teach a man to fish and he will eat every day, is very true.

1. Excellent reminders. e are our brother's keepers, as needed.   Updated at 7:37 PM

Lincoln said the same, so did Thomas Paine.

Then open your checkbook and help out your brothers. Quit sitting in front of a computer and call for us to open other people's check books.

If you libs truly cared about the poor and downtrodden then all the charities would be overflowing with money.

The only time I have seen Pope John Paul referenced on DU in a positive light.

Coming from a guy who shuffled around and hid pedophile priests in Los Angeles for DECADES, this is the height of hypocrisy.

And all they've done is cherry-pick a few quotes to "guilt" people into giving them free shit.  You want to know how you're treated, DUmmies?  You want to see just what REAL poverty and desperation are all about?  Just because someone doesn't GIVE you a "living wage", "free" healthcare, and every little thing you want like a bunch of spoiled children, doesn't mean the OPPORTUNITY for you to go and EARN those things doesn't exist.

Oh, but that might require some EFFORT on your part--can't have that, now can we?

You accuse us of not being "worldly", not "well-traveled", what have you.  I have, and I can say without a ****ing doubt you people would fall on your knees and thank God for what you have here if you did.

What better person to teach children with special needs than a teacher with "special needs."   :rotf:

Mexico will end up in the litter box of history then.

They foist their weakest and poorest on their neighbors. Pretty cheap for an oil producing country...
