CBO: Taxing mileage a 'practical option' for revenue enhancement
By Pete Kasperowicz - 03/24/11 04:17 PM ET
The Congressional Budget Office (CBO) this week released a report that said taxing people based on how many miles they drive is a possible option for raising new revenues and that these taxes could be used to offset the costs of highway maintenance at a time when federal funds are short.

The report discussed the proposal in great detail, including the development of technology that would allow total vehicle miles traveled (VMT) to be tracked, reported and taxed, as well as the pros and cons of mandating the installation of this technology in all vehicles.

How much does anyone want to bet this would be in addition to the gasoline tax, and not simply a replacement for it?

No bet.  I have to save that money for my mileage taxes.  :banghead:

Nevada wanted to impose a tax similar to this.  If they use a GPS type of system to track the miles, it can be easily disabled.  If they impose this VMT requirement, I will no longer be a car owner in the eyes of the government.

Yes, I will become an undocumented car owner if this goes thru.

Then you're going to be a DEMOCRAT.

Do you really think democrat voters are going to pay this tax? Hell, they don't pay the ones we have now.

But don't you think enough is enough?  We pay so much for our vehicles.  And I get it, driving is a privilege.  We pay taxes to register our cars, emissions, and gas.  And now they want to tax us to drive to work?  Give us a break.  But, if the government passes this and gets cars off the road, it will be a win to them... less eeeeeeeeeevil pollution.  ::)

It's just irritating.

Another strike against good ideas to solve our problems.  The only solution, and it's crystal clear, is to stop spending so much.  That's IT!  It's going to get to the point where it makes more economic sense to just sit at home and do nothing all day.

...Of course you can't own property without paying taxes, so I guess we'll have to be nomadic.  They'll probably devise a walking tax at that point.

If they are so bent on stirring things up with taxes how about this then- Go ahead and legalize marijuana like they've been whining for for years, heavily penalize illegal production, distribution, etc. and tax it at rates akin to what we have on gasoline and cigarettes.

That just might spark a revolution, no?

dang, i have a hard time with the taxes i pay now................ :hammer: I drive approx 25 miles to work now. Now and then I go see my parents /and or my sister... I stopped going down, because of the price of gas. I have two options, move closer to work(preferable) or transfer to a closer store...which is hard because some Walmarts don't accept transfers....

What utter horseshit.  So now libs would like to penalize the working poor?  Those are the folks driving many miles a day to commute to jobs where they perform a myriad of low wage service jobs for affluent neighborhoods/cities/resorts, etc.  No one could seriously believe the poor can afford to live in Sun Valley, ID, for example, yet this miles tax would penalize them for working. :argh:

A side effect that is desired by the leftists , is to get more people to move into cities and to reverse white flight.  Also their cherished welfare class that don't own cars won't be hit nor will public transportation , is my guess.

Cars = freedom, the people that control this government don't want us to have freedom. Taxing miles means they can further restrict freedom. GPS in your car to see how far you go and where you go.  I f*cking deduct my miles now for work, so I get a double tax: lose the deduction and pay by the mile.

This proposal is so much horseshit it wouldn't even get out of committee, let alone survive even the most basic challenge.  I can see this getting struck down on 1st and 4th Amendment issues right off the bat.

Except for some few Democrats in densely-urbanized parts of the Northeast with low car ownership, anyone who votes for this would be out on his or her ass at the next election.
