Title: Netflix, Redbox
Post by: seahorse513 on March 25, 2011, 11:18:54 AM
I love, love Netflix. It's only 10.49 a month, unlimited movies or tv, mail or online. I do the mail one. I don't have any cable, so this works for me. They have so many movies, it's unbelievable!!(great documentaries and historical !! Redbox is great in a quick jam, it's only 1.00 per movie, but options are somewhat limited. Of course there is the library as well.

Redbox is convenient, but the one closest to me doesn't seem to get updated as often as some others.

I'm waiting for Tron: Legacy to come out next month. :hyper:

I wouldn't mind Netflix. However, does one HAVE to watch the rented movie right then or can it be saved for an hour or two, a day, a week, etc for future play?? Their site doesn't seem to answer that.

Can they be downloaded to the computer and burned to DVD?

Well, found out one thing about Netflix. They don't really have that many movies available for streaming. Mostly older movies. NONE of the New Releases are available for streaming. That really sucks !!

I don't know. It would seem that they'd be in the cache someplace.

The movies don't fully download, they just stream. And it is almost instant - like watching a youtube video.  They don't have very many new releases is the problem. But they do have a lot of tv shows and series, as well as older movies which is kind of cool.

I would be careful with doing that.It might be considered piracy

I wonder if it records your MAC address or something similar.  I've never used it, but I bet someone has found out what kind of tracking 'cookie' they use for rentals.

You can go to redbox.com and reserve the movie you want so you know it's there when you go to pick it up.

I have a Redbox website account and I see nothing that lets me request a movie.  I brought up the location and the movie I wanted and the only option I have is an email reminder.  You'd think it would be something they would have readily available.

There are four vending machines within a mile of each other here... McDonalds, Walgreens, Kroger, and Wal-Mart.

After I search for a location and movie I have a big red RENT button in the middle of my screen.

Does Netflix still "throttle" (i.e. delay the frequency of) the rentals of their members?  That was a pretty big controversy a while back.

Redbox is okay.  They seem to carry an inordinate number of horror movies for some reason (at least around here).  Plus their touchscreens tend to not work in wet weather.

I never had any problems with that.  I had 6 dvds at a time and usually only had them for a day or two.  I love Netflix!  My kids get to watch a ton of kid's movies and tv shows that they would have never heard about.  We have watched a bunch of complete series on the live streaming.  It is totally worth the money.

Well considering you have to mail it back, and wait for turn around time, it will take at the least 24 hours. Also when my closest location didn't have my next movie in queue, they sent me a courtesy email, saying that it might take a couple of more days. That was fine with me, as I don't think I need to watch a movie everyday. Heavens above.... ::)

Well you can have the movie for awhile if you want, just realize that you won't get the next one in queue, until you mail the first one back.....

@ mamascags, how do you get more than 1 at a time????

Bump up to the next membership plan price ($14.99/month I believe) and you can get more than one dvd sent at a time.

I was referring to the streamed movies. DVDs are a whole 'nother animal. I've heard how those work.

Let's say that I start a movie and something comes up and I have to take care of it. It takes me two or three hours or maybe I can't get back to the movie until the next day. Do I have to start all over with the movie or is it saved long enough for me to continue where I left off.?? Netflix FAQs don't address that issue. However, learning that the selections of streamed movies are pretty limited, the question is almost moot at this point.

Basically, I don't want to deal with mailing DVDs back & forth. I'd just prefer to let my computer do the work.

Thor-

You can stream movies anytime...start, stop, then start again where you left off whenever...makes no difference, and with a good internet connection, takes only a matter of seconds.

I watch Netflix through my Wii on my bigscreen tv, and I love it. If I start watching something, and get distracted with the kids, chores, whatever, I can just turn it off, do what needs done, then start it again later when there's time.

I only use Netflix for streaming right now. It is great for certain things. Saw a great BS movie on the whole "Paul is dead" hoax from the Beatles era. Still, it was more factual than any Michael Moore movie I have ever seen.

And then there are lots of TV shows. I watched all of Red Dwarf at first and now am making my way through The Office. They also have a deal with Starz where any new releases Starz gets is available to stream. They just had a falling out with Starz over original series, though. You used to be able to stream any Starz series right away but now you have to wait 90 days. I don't believe I have ever watched a Starz original series when I had Starz but I am keen to see Torchwood.

I stream through my Wii.

I am thinking of going for 1 DVD for a little while. Certain things simply aren't available. I just read all the Bourne novels, the ones written by Ludlum at any rate, and I would like to see the TV mini-series since the major motion picture sucked so much. I've also always wanted to see the first season of Manix which wasn't available for streaming last time I checked.

We have the 3 DVD Netflix plan - Its great. Get the new stuff on disc, stream the older stuff through the Wii. Everybody wins.

You watched that too, huh?
The blatant editing of interview audio to make it sound like George was saying "Faul" was somewhat insulting.

<3 Netflix.

Not to mention "Rita's" identity.  Even if one where blissfully ignorant of everything else in that focumentary, that had to hit a dead false tone.

It's not a rental, per se.  What I do sometimes is start or select a movie, and if I leave I can come back to it, start from where I left off, or play it from the beginning.  It stores  your most recent selections.

However, my biggest gripe about Netflix is that the online selection is pretty limited.  Very little in terms of the classics.  I'm actually considering canceling it because they just don't have as many "good" movies as I like.  Pity, really.  I'd pay a little extra to have a better online selection.

Pretty sure it does, regardless of whether or not you use a game console (like a Wii) or laptop/desktop.

Rented from a Redbox tonight.  Stupid touchscreen was completely messed up.  I kept having to start over because the screen wouldn't correctly identify where I was touching.
