Title: Organization calls for strike of unpaid Huffpo writers
Post by: Chris_ on March 21, 2011, 11:23:10 PM
Quote
The Newspaper Guild is calling on unpaid writers of the Huffington Post to withhold their work in support of a strike launched by Visual Art Source in response to the company’s practice of using unpaid labor. In addition, we are asking that our members and all supporters of fair and equitable compensation for journalists join us in shining a light on the unprofessional and unethical practices of this company.

Just as we would ask writers to stand fast and not cross a physical picket line, we ask that they honor this electronic picket line.

The Newspaper Guild, a 26,000-member-strong national union of media workers, is committed to fair compensation for all workers, whether they are freelance bloggers or traditional employees. We are further committed to promoting quality journalism. Working for free does not benefit workers and undermines quality journalism.

In response to the Huffington Post’s refusal to compensate its thousands of writers in the wake of its $315 million merger with AOL, the Newspaper Guild has requested a meeting with company officials to discuss ways the Huffington Post might demonstrate its commitment to quality journalism. Thus far, the request has been ignored.

I wonder if anybody would notice if the writers at the Huffpo went on strike.

A friend of mine is a blogger there.  I should pick her brain and see what she thinks.

I read a piece a while ago, probably on Breitbart, about how a bunch of the bloggers were unhappy after the mega-buyout.  They asked for some money and Arianna said something to the effect of, "screw you, you're bloggers, if you don't like it start your own damn website!"

Guess that didn't sit too well.

ETA: wow did I remember the source wrong:

They don't deserve to get paid. They thump the tub of those who want the collapse of our system. What did they think when going in that the far-left was full of actual ideals? Its intent is to see a thug-run government in power. Ariannia's response is fitting for that mentality.

Like all liberals, Massive Micheal and the Huffer both support the "worker" and the "unions" as long as "they" don't actually have to pay the "workers" or "union" scale.......hippo-crits.

Problem is Johnny, the people actually swallow the crap they serve. As long as that keeps going on America will continue to slide down the hill. Hopefully the Tea Party will continue to enroll more people who never got involved before and they will wake up their neighbors to stand up to the con Ariannia is putting out.

Thing is, though, they can't swallow what isn't there.  Huffington's business model is really pretty nasty: pay a few names to write some op-eds and get a gazillion wannabes to write for free.  If (and I'm guessing this is a big if) there really is a strike and really does get publicity and the bloggers really do stay away, AOL is gonna realize they made one bigass lame purchase.

It'll probably fall apart a lot faster or corporate will throw some pennies at the peasants before this thing gets too big.

I never could get why anyone would want to follow her. Sure, the ones who want to ruin America, I understand why they follow her, its the others who think she serves some higher purpose. I just never get that.
