Mithchell: Before I let you go, Congressman, do you have any reservations about the military operation in Libya?
Markey: Well, we're in Libya because of oil.
And I think both Japan and nuclear technology and Libya and this dependence we have on this imported oil have both once again highlighted the need for the United States to have a renewable energy agenda going forward.
I think the president did notify Congress that he was going to take action. I think it is going to be limited in scope. I think it is consistent with siding with the aspirations of young, more educated people who are seeking a new direction for Libya in the 21st century.
But it all goes back to the 5 million barrels of oil that we import from OPEC on a daily basis and the Republicans in Congress -- and I'm just going to finish on this note -- last week in the House of Representatives, in the Energy and Commerce Committee, stripped the Environmental Protection Agency of their ability to increase the fuel economy standards of the cars and trucks and planes and trains that we put the oil into. And, by the way, in a bill that passed three weeks ago, zeroed out all the loan guarantee money for wind and solar, while leaving in the money for nuclear power.

I never understood this reasoning at all. Why the hell would we go all the way to the ME to exact our imperialism (aka steal oil) when our largest supplier Canada has no military to speak of, is in commuting distance, and hell I think the folks in Alberta would welcome the American flag if we decided to just move in and take over.

In a way it does. Since the eco-fascists have been successful in not only stopping drilling but also refinery construction, About 20% of our refined gasoline comes from europe where the Libyan light goes to be refined.
When you dig deep enough all of our energy and financial problems stem from the evil twins of eco-fascism and socialist entitlement communists.

I've been trying to figure out their obsession with oil. I mean this has been going on for decades...it's been responsible for every malady on the planet. And yet the planet stands. The seasons cycle in and out. Sometimes the seasons are typical, sometimes not. Babies are born with all their fingers and toes. People are living longer than they did before oil became so important to our way of life. Just because these people have enough oil in their hair to fuel a Prius doesn't mean the rest of us don't want to wash ours.

I repeat DUmmies, we don't receive any oil from Libya, so this argument won't even pass the smell test. They supply around 3% of the oil in Europe! We don't get any of it, so how the hell are we goin' to war over oil we don't receive any benefit from?

Very true. Oil is a world commodity, anything that affects its availabitly anywhere ultimately affects its price everywhere.

Unfortunately speculators of failure of production and delivery are driving the price upwards, do to the ability to gamble and make money on the availability or the lack of it.
Ought to be a law against it. Libs are all for gubmint intervention, why not put an end to speculation of commodities? They'll never do it though. To many of them have made their fortunes doing it themselves. Hitlery made a 100 grand speculatin' on cattle futures while investing what, 6 grand?
Somethin' is terribly wrong with the system when you can make more money speculating failure, than you can success!

It would have to be worldwide to work, but the one very effective way to stop rampant speculation in commodities would be to require that anyone who buys has to hold the asset for 24 hours before re-selling.
