Help! My mother has started watching Fox News!
Edited on Sun Mar-20-11 03:13 PM by Zephie
I have talked about my mother a few times before. She is a very sweet older woman, but easily taken in. Lately her elderly lady friends have been pressuring her to watch Fox News because it might as well be God's Chosen Channel to them. I do not need to describe the fervent adherence that the white over 65 crowd has to the network, you already know.

That said, I was talking to my mother today and she started asking me questions about Libya. This is strange as generally she gets her political information from me - she is not a big news follower. The questions sounded to be decidedly coming from a pro-military intervention angle and I asked where she had heard about these things. "Who told you this?" I asked. "There was a politician on TV this morning talking about it." I asked who, and she said she didn't remember. Then she said she saw it on Fox. I was horrified. "Why are you watching Fox?" I asked. She told me that she wanted to keep up with the news more ("Things are getting scary, they talk about it at church") and that everyone has told her Fox is the best news source. I have told her many times about Fox and it's capitalistic and war-centric bias and asked why she followed their advice. She said her eyes were bothering her lately and that she wasn't reading the websites and links I've sent her email in the past few weeks because of it. She wants to watch something on TV instead.

Help me DU, I need a good TV news source that an older woman could follow. It doesn't need to be spoon fed news - my mother is quite sharp, but she is also not going to be able to follow something too c-span like.

She's feisty. If she keeps up to date now that she's interested, she could combat those blue haired old biddies on any important topic and win. I just need to help her find a place to get her information.

Edit: Guys, I'm not going to block a channel on her TV.

And it is one of my first choice news sources. I'll always go to them second (after DU. :loveya:).

I just talked to her and she'll be watching Maddow tomorrow. I'm relieved.

Yay you saved her from that evil Faux snooze.  :mental:

I love how all the DUmmies have jumped onto the Maddow bandwagon now that Keef is no longer around, yet Fox News is the Borg collective that must be defeated.  Got to get your marching orders somewhere, right?

Oh, and 'LOL' to the dimwits that suggested Al Jazeera.

Help her recommend a channel?   she really can't do that on her own?

The average DUmp monkey needs to ask how many sheets of toilet paper they should use while wiping.

Just in case you lurkers wonder how many, it's 42 sheets.

Ironically, the left is one of the biggest viewers of FOX News.

Not for Single Square Sheryl Crow. You know, right around the time she started her single-square crusade, Lance Armstrong broke up with her. Wonder if there was a connection.

Amazing how a woman who managed to raise children and make a life for herself could be dumb. And they just know every little thing. There's a bit of Nadin in each and every DUmmie. Mom will watch 15 minutes of Maddow and never watch her again...and she'll seriously start to wonder if her child is a nutcase.

So very reminiscent of the shock a Party member would claim if a relative were caught out for the 'Crime' of listening to a Western radio newscast in the USSR or the Reich, no?

How dare she state, Quote/    Edit: Guys, I'm not going to block a channel on her TV.

Since when does a child have the right to edit or censure their parents from watching the news.???    How dare she decide to take away choice from a parent in any way ????

My family tried that when JFK was assassinated and grandpa was recovering from  a heartattack.    The family ran about going nuts that this news would be the final straw.     Being bedridden my grandpa at home had no choice but to live by the rules of his children.

After they unplugged the TV and removed the radio from his room and told him both needed repair this old man smelled a rat.

Some time in the night he crawled out of bed and plugged the TV back in.     Family found him the next morning in the kitchen making a cup of tea, the TV on and for the next 3 years he lived just to watch what the heck was going on.

He  got out of bed to get dressed and go downtown to discuss with old friends the problems.    He gained weight, his sense of humor and became interested in something other then himself.

3 years of life he gained over dieing in bed 2 months later.-------Ah what the hell he was a Candian French men, who can tell them what to do ???

Zephie sounds like a brat.  Who cares what mommy dearest watches in the privacy of her own home?  If her church friend's are watching Fox too, maybe her mother wants to be able to join the conversations and know what her friend's are speaking about.  Ever think of that?

My mom told me she watches MSNBC most of the time.  I giggle inside, but it's her choice.  I'm not going to get on this website and post a thread about my mother watching MSNBC and what I need to do to get her to stop watching it.

From a Harvard study of the media;

Quote
Before I discuss the underlying data I think it is interesting to point out that the data on Fox News directly contradicts the mainstream narrative about its bias in favor of Republican candidates. While Fox news was more negative than other candidates about Democrats this trend merely helped underscore Fox’s neutrality in coverage because of the lopsided nature of Fox’s competitors as noted in the study.

The programming studied on Fox News offered a somewhat more positive picture of Republicans and more negative one of Democrats compared with other media outlets. Fox News stories about a Republican candidate were most likely to be neutral (47%), with the remainder more positive than negative (32% vs. 21% negative). The bulk of that positive coverage went to Giuliani (44% positive), while McCain still suffered from unflattering coverage (20% positive vs. 35% negative).

When it came to Democratic candidates, the picture was more negative. Again, neutral stories had a slight edge (39%), followed by 37% negative and 24% positive. And, in marked contrast from the rest of the media, coverage of Obama was twice as negative as positive: 32% negative vs. 16% positive and 52% neutral.

But any sense here that the news channel was uniformly positive about Republicans or negative about Democrats is not manifest in the data.

I find these statistics the most alarming of all the study results because a whole political party banned Fox News based on an unfounded narrative that was put forth by liberal interest groups.

Ever notice that primitives, who are the first to call a conservative a fascist, Hitler, etc etc.. are the first people who will work to take things away that they feel 'are bad for you' ? Some examples; tobacco, fast food, alcohol, sugar, 'genetically modified' foods, trans-fats, Fox News, firearms, fur & leather products, plastic bags, hot water, 'good' cleaning chemicals, pesticides, energy sources that actually work, and toilets that completely flush ?

Yet we, who believe in personal liberties, are the goose-steppers ?  :???:

And that eliminating a lot of those things is supposed to make you live longer and yet they seem to be completely miserable all the time?
