Obama: Some Pennsylvania voters 'bitter'
WASHINGTON, April 11 (UPI) -- Presidential hopeful Barack Obama is being criticized for saying some Pennsylvania voters "cling to guns or religion or antipathy" out of political frustration.
The remark was contained in an audiotape posted online at The Huffington Post, The Washington Post said Friday. On the tape, which was made at a San Francisco fundraiser, Obama said Pennsylvanians' frustrations come in part from failed domestic policies.
"You go into some of these small towns in Pennsylvania, and like a lot of small towns in the Midwest, the jobs have been gone now for 25 years and nothing's replaced them," he said.
Obama said both the Clinton and Bush administrations have let voters down.
"And it's not surprising then they get bitter, they cling to guns or religion or antipathy to people who aren't like them or anti-immigrant sentiment or anti-trade sentiment as a way to explain their frustration."
An adviser to presumptive Republican nominee John McCain said Obama's comment revealed "an elitism and condescension towards hardworking Americans that is nothing short of breathtaking."
Obama rival Hillary Clinton told a Pennsylvania audience Friday people in the state are "resilient" and "optimistic."
"Pennsylvanians don't need a president who looks down on them," she said. "They need a president who stands up for them, who fights for them."

Obama says he erred in comments on "bitter" voters
MUNCIE, Indiana (Reuters) - Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama, attacked by his rivals as an elitist for describing small-town voters as people who "cling to guns or religion," said on Saturday he erred in how he expressed the concerns of those voters.
Obama was accused by Democrat Hillary Clinton and Republican John McCain of taking a condescending view of working-class voters after video surfaced of him speaking at a private fund-raiser last weekend where he sought to explain the concerns of some Pennsylvania voters.
Those voters were "bitter" about job losses and other economic woes and so "they cling to guns or religion or antipathy to people who aren't like them or anti-immigrant sentiment or anti-trade sentiment as a way to explain their frustrations," Obama, an Illinois senator, said.
After facing a barrage of criticism from New York Sen. Clinton and Arizona Sen. McCain, Obama told a campaign rally in Muncie, Indiana, his description was clumsy and did not convey his meaning.
"I didn't say it as well as I should have," said Obama, who is vying with Clinton for the Democratic nomination and the right to run in November against presumptive Republican nominee McCain.
Obama said he believed many voters were indeed bitter about the economy and he meant to say "when you're bitter you turn to what you can count on."
"So people -- they vote about guns, or they take comfort from their faith and their family and their community," he said. But he said he had not meant to imply that was a bad thing.

I was wondering if the fact that this guy was a professor would factor into the campaign, and
perhaps this is it. for a good part of his life, he lectured kids, and what he said was the way it
was. it just isn't that way anymore; just because he says that small town folks are bitter about
things and hide behind guns and God doesn't mean that we all furiously scribble it down in our spiral
notebooks.
I wonder if he totally understands that . . . .

I think it may have been one of those "got tired and said something stupid" (i.e., told the
truth) moments. his primary campaign has been fairly effortless since super tuesday; he
doesn't know the depths of tired until the general election starts.

You know this in your own lives. And what we need is a federal government that is actually paying attention. A government that is fighting for working people day in and day out making sure that we are trying to allow them to live out the American dream and that's what this campaign is about. ... Rush played a segment from Wolfe Blitzer's show on CNN, they were discussing "Bittergate" and Jack Cafferty said something like, "What Obama said was true, jobs have been lost in small town America for decades and people are upset. Look what happens in the Middle East, when they don't have jobs, they join Al Qaeda." What Jack? Small town America folks are like Al Qaeda?

Many people are already making up their minds on BO vs McCain, and while the lefties will swoon on him, the moderates will shun him and go to McCain. Unless McCain starts to stumble, BO cannot win.
