Japan nuclear crisis escalates
International concern that Japan has lost control over the nuclear crisis is escalating as Britain, France and other nations advised their citizens to "consider" leaving Tokyo because of heightened radiation levels.
Yukiya Amano, head of the International Atomic Energy Agency, said he would visit the Japanese capital to gather information about the "very serious" situation at the Fukushima plant.
Conflicting reports from the damaged nuclear plant have deepened alarm over Japan's management of the crisis, leading to charges that the authorities are actually making the situation worse.
Gregory Jaczko, who heads the US nuclear regulator, said Japan had failed to order a big enough evacuation. He told Congress the public should get at least 50 miles away from the stricken plant. The Japanese cleared a radius of 12 miles.

Mebbe so, but one also wonders how long before the amnesia usually associated with long term substance abuse requires some her to undergo some reeducation.

Or maybe she's realizing by reading up that the world isn't going to end in a flash and a horrible nuclear winter.

You can bet that she's hoping for it though. All of her other doomsday scenarios haven't worked out.

Nadin - the gift that keeps on giving. :-)

HUMAN ERROR....yep, that's what I heard caused all this trouble. One person was told to fill the diesel generator with fuel and he failed to do that. When the diesel backup ran out of fuel they were unable to restart it and things went down hill from there. They were unable to pump cooling water and sooooooooo... you know the rest of the story.
The system didn't fail, humans did.

Have you purchased your potassium iodide pills yet, Nadin?

Hopefully, she'll take a bottle or two of them--all at once.

I think I will purchase all of them in the valley and then drive over to California and sell the pills about $100 a pop.

BTW Ben & Jerry's, Nadin has already copyrighted Sandy-Cream.

Nadin is going on and on about the nuclear radiation on Twitter too. It's kind of funny.

Please tell me you're being sarcastic. Because that story is, to put it mildly, a load of steaming horseshit.

Sorry but that was on CBS (I Think) yesterday morning.
If it's true, and being Japanese, I bet the dude has already off-ed himself.

It's not. It's a steaming pile of horseshit. Their DG's, like ours, have HUGE (think tens of THOUSANDS of gallons) fuel tanks, and on top of that they have "day tanks" which are required to be full at all times. None of this, "Oh, I forgot" crap, and certainly not after running for only an hour.
And CBS is about half a step below Weekly World News for credibility, and about six steps below in entertainment value.

Don't go off on CBS just yet.....although they do deserve it sometimes. The wife watches TV while she gets ready for work and I pay about as much attention to what's on as...well...a fly on the wall. It could have been ABC/NBC or some other channel.
Not questioning you but where did you get that it only ran for one hour? Is there a story/article/link out there about that?
Did the tsunami go that far inland? Did they maybe get water in the fuel?
It'll be months before we find out what really went on in those plants.
Lastly...My BIL, married to the good sister, was a Senior Analytical Design Engineer on the nuclear side of Duke Energy. He did work on most of Dukes nuclear plants and was on a start-up/certification team that worked under contract for the government...haven't talked to him lately so I might just call him up today and ask about his new knees and his thoughts on this subject.
-
We're getting updates at work. The DG's ran between the time the earthquake hit and when the tsunami hit.

OK...so things were normal, or at least under control, until the water hit and then yet unknown things happened after that?

Pretty much. The larger storage tank is below, and the day tanks are above the diesels, but even then, had it not been for the tsunami, the DG's would have run for a good while (hence the expression "day tank") before they needed filling.

I heard someone forgot to contact Nada so she could get there in time to fix the plumbing! Heads will roll when they find out who dropped the ball on that one!

About 600 pounds and 4 gallons a day.
