EPA deploys more radiation monitors to the West Coast

As public concern grows about radiation from Japan possibly drifting to the West Coast of the United States, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency on Tuesday announced that it will deploy more electronic monitors that measure radiation levels in the air.

The monitors of gamma radiation and radioactive particles, will be set up in "parts of the Western U.S. and U.S. territories," the agency said in a statement.
EPA officials, however, refused to answer questions or make staff members available to explain the exact location and number of monitors, or the [/b]levels of radiation, if any, being recorded at existing monitors in California. Margot Perez-Sullivan, a spokeswoman at EPA regional headquarters in San Francisco, said the agency's written statement would stand on its own.

Critics said the public needs more information.

"It's disappointing," said Bill Magavern, director of Sierra Club California. "I have a strong suspicion that EPA is being silenced by those in the federal government who don't want anything to stand in the way of a nuclear power expansion in this country, heavily subsidized by taxpayer money."

Ok for all those laughing you do NOT deploy more monitors UNLESS you are concerned about getting some of this crap in the West Coast.

I realize some folks will continue to laugh anyway.

Since the EPA isn't releasing current readings, they can claim an increase with any levels they do release later.  More fodder for the leftist to block nuke plants.

That's bullshit.

3. What can I say?

I think DC is slowly waking up to the MAJOR emergency

No, you idiot.  It's just  that they remember Rahm's advice.  Never let a good crisis go to waste.

4. I hope independent companies and universities set out monitors as well

It's not that I don't trust the epa I just would prefer that information to be made more readily available to the public. I also hope individuals with Geiger counters get out there and blog/report their findings as well.

Yeah, I don't trust this administration either.

Unless your geiger counter has been tested for NORMAL every year, you cannot really tell. They have to meet standards.

Also most folks probably will have issues interpreting the data.

Stupid scrunt.  Anyone that has any radiation detector probably knows how to use it.  Then again, how hard is it to take daily readings , write them down and look for a trend?

9. I sure as hell don't trust the EPA...

The same EPA that told us 'ground zero' was fine and dandy.

The same EPA that did absolutely nothing when BP continued dumping mass quantities of Corexit into the Gulf.

The same EPA that has little to say about the disaster in the Gulf--and did not warn people about swimming
in the Gulf or eating the seafood.

That EPA?

At best, we should get a second opinion. At worst, their opinion is bald-faced lies.

Either way--the most helpful and critical opinions will come from experts/academics who have
geiger counters and know how to read the data.

Yeah, because the great unwashed DUmmies can't hold a candle to Nadin's beautiful mind.

The EPA is wrong on nearly every subject imaginable, but outside the world of moonbats, it's batting a thousand on those three items.

These idiots do not understand a simple truism:

"Dilution is the solution to pollution."

All pollution.  Chemical or nuclear.  Once the radioactivity leaves the site it starts to decay immediately.  Then, it gets into the wind currents . . . and gets diluted further.  I heard Dr. Michael Savage's nuclear expert say last night that, if any of the radiation actually gets to the US, it will be so dilute as not to set off any but the most sensitive radiation detectors.

In an emergency, the DUmmies in San Francisco could use an organic radiation detector....squeeze a queers nuts, if he screams, radiation levels are still low.

Awww- now you're just a buzzkill for Nadin's hopes and dreams of being right.

It's called calibration oh so smartest of the smartest and most talented. The Geiger is a very simple device and although you should have them calibrated they rarely if ever go out of calibration unless subject to huge amounts of radiation. Either way you can use it for deltas and be within a few percent.  Inside a nice cinder block building the Geiger counter will be almost silent, take it outside and it starts going off.

Most modern radiation detectors are essentially self-calibrating (at least the one that I have is).......when you power it up with the probe parked in its holder (the holder contains a tiny radioactive pellet), the system checks its reading against the precision source, and adjusts the detection level accordingly.  When the probe is removed from the holder, a small spring-loaded lead shield slides over the calibration source, so it will not effect the instruments active readings.

Is this "Nadin" DUmmie an expert os virtually everything??.

I have one I got almost ten years ago that was a Civil Defense model made in 1962. We were making an x-ray cabinet and had to send in our new module for calibration and certification before shipping the machine. The new counter read exactly the same as my CD one before and after the calibration of the new one.

I've got one of those "yellow" CD counters as well (all the schools had them when I was growing up).  Bought it at a flea market for two bucks, put batteries in it and it still works!!  Not sure I'd want to depend on it though, as the vacuum tube in the probe will eventually get "gassy"   I was amazed though that it still finctioned after nearly fifty years..

OK I'll admit it. I went to eBay and those things are all over the place. They even have kits that look pretty cool. High level detector, low level detector, dosimeters and a charger for a couple hundred bucks.

There's also a Russian surplus set of 10 dosimeters and a self powered charger for $74.95 plus stout shipping that'd bring it in just under a hundred that looks pretty cool just to play with.  :-)

I sure did click it. Awful high dollar for a kit.  :-) That's why I looked at eBay they had kits that were cheaper.  :-)
